“DAISY!!”
I suddenly jerked up on hearing my mother’s voice at my door. Damn when did I fall asleep?
“Yes mom” I replied still very sleepy. Still on my bed.
“How you doing?”
She walked into my room looking around like she hasn’t seen this room in the longest time. Probably because she hasn’t.
“I’m fine…” I guess we still on good terms.
“Really Daisy?” Her voice suddenly changed and I got scared.
“Did I do something wrong mom?” My voice started shaking. Damn I just woke up… hold up. I JUST WOKE UP???
The bright rays piercing through the thick curtains in my room gave away the time and it most definitely not 6:00 am! My alarm was next to me ringing its loudest.
“I’m sorry mom. I…I…slept…” I stammered involuntarily staggering to my feet. Chores aren’t gonna do themselves and so is breakfast!
“Hey hey where are you going?” Her voice changed again. She suddenly became soft and nice. She grabbed my arm and smiled at me.
“I’ve done the chores don’t worry.”
WHAT?
“You’ve done what mom?” I asked in loud disbelief
“The chores Daisy. I’ve done the chores and I’ve made breakfast as well.” She said gently standing up and walking towards the door
“Join me for breakfast. I’ll be waiting.” She said and walked out
What just happened? I’ve barely woken up man, I’m not comprehending nothing right now!
Slowly, I walked into the bathroom to wash my face.
Whatever’s going on with my mom should have happened sooner.
I grabbed an extra large tee from my clean laundry basket and underwear as well and walked into the bathroom.
Thirty minutes after I was done. Finally decide to put off the alarm that refused to put itself to sleep. Quickly did my skincare and that. Applying my lipgloss and perfume, I ran downstairs to join my mom who to my surprise was patiently seated waiting for me.
“Took you long enough…” she said standing up, walking over to the dinning.
“Breakfast scents nice mom”
Damn it really does!
“It’s just toast and beacon Daisy” my mom laughed
“Shall we?” I asked dragging out a dinning chair and sitting down
“Damn I’m hungry” she replied
We started eating and I must be honest, all this feels like a dream.
“So Daisy…” mom started halfway into breakfast
“Yeah” I followed up biting down toast
“I got an email from your school this morning.” She paused letting the silence create tension
Damn! Did Mr Derrick do something? Am I in trouble? Oh no no no!
I suddenly started choking and shivering.
“Take it easy Daisy. Relax. Are you okay?” My mom asked tapping on my back, sounding very concern
“Yeah yeah…” I managed to say as my heart was pumping very hard against my chest.
“Drink some water” mom said pointing to a glass water next to me
“Thanks mom” I replied not picking up the glass because my hands are shaking
“So in the email…” mom carried on
I stared straight into thin air, expecting the worst.
“I was told that your senior year prom comes up in three weeks” she paused again but this time the earlier tension died down very fast
“Oh gosh…” I breath in relief
“Yeah. So I was wondering maybe we could go shopping today since you don’t have exams. What do you think?” Mom asked
“Shopping?”
Shopping? With my mom?
“Oh common Daisy! There’s always a first time” she laughed completely reading my thoughts
“What are we shopping for?” I asked maintaining s serious face
“Your prom Daisy…” her tone was now in sync with my facial expression
“Oh oh yeah! Wait you said in three weeks?” I tried laughing but I failed
“Yeah three weeks. Be dressed in an hour” she said, stood up and walked straight to her room.
What did I do again?
As we both lost appetite, I took the dishes to the kitchen and left it there. Unwashed.
Walking to my room, I was mentally picking outfits.
I got to my room and slammed the door behind me. Prom prom prom. I ain’t never attended one of these. Like not for once. Not even my junior year prom like never! Thinking of it alone gives me too much anxiety.
Okay so my mom said one hour… what am I going to do till then? I should probably get dressed and wait for her.
I opened my closet door trying to look for whatever is comfortable and classy.
Yeah! Cargo pants and black tees.
Taking out the black cargo pants and plain black tee shirt, it was time to pick shoes. More specifically, sneakers.
I’m in the mood for dark colors today so I’m going with black and white Nike sneakers.
I did my hair in a ponytail. Did my edges as well. Although I’m a ginger head, I love silver jewelry.
I sprayed half of the perfume on my body, applied my lipgloss and wore my wristwatch. I grabbed my tiny shoulder bag, looked at my kind of messy room, took a deep breath and walked out. Let’s go shop or whatever!
“Hey mom” I called stopping at her room’s door. There was response.
“Mom” I called again looking over the staircase
“Daisy!” She shouted from the kitchen.
Dammit!
“Coming!” I replied knowing damn well she wants me to do the dishes before we leave…if we are actually going shopping at all.
“Hurry!” She shouted again from the kitchen
I quickened my pace and met her standing by the sink in the kitchen.
“Oh you’re all dressed up! You definitely got your fashion sense from me Daisy” she smiled admiring my outfit
“Mom they are literally all black and all plain” I said and we laughed in unison. Awkward.
“Okay if you’re ready let go” she said and walked out of the kitchen to grab her car keys upstairs.
This woman and her weird mood swings. Scared my breakfast outta me for not washing the dishes and didn’t talk about me washing them? What’s really going on?
“Lock the windows, put off the lights and ACs, lock the doors and meet me in my car Daisy!” I heard my mom yell walking across the living to the front door, slamming it.
“Yes mom!” I shouted running from end to end trying to do as my mom just said.
After a little upstairs and downstairs marathon, I was ready to leave. A little sweaty and heaving heavily, I ran out the front door and slammed it shut.
Let’s go and shop I guess…
