Episode 14 – Hearts Unmasked (Part 1)
The Khumalo mansion stood quiet again. The night after the docks fight stretched long and calm, the kind of calm that felt earned.
Jessica sat alone in the garden, the moonlight tracing silver across her hair. The roses shimmered faintly with dew; the air carried that Johannesburg mix of smoke and jasmine. She closed her eyes, letting herself breathe for the first time in days.
Jayden: “You always come out here when you can’t sleep.”
Jessica: “I could say the same about you.”
He walked toward her, jacket still on, shirt slightly torn at the shoulder — a silent badge from the night’s chaos.
Jessica: “You didn’t tell me you were hit.”
Jayden: “Didn’t want to worry you.”
Jessica: “Too late.”
He gave a small smile and sank onto the bench beside her. The quiet between them was heavy but not uncomfortable.
Jayden: “We handled the Fangs. They won’t test us again.”
Jessica: “You handled them. I only watched.”
Jayden: “You obeyed me. That matters.”
Jessica: “It doesn’t feel like victory when the people I love bleed for it.”
Jayden turned his head toward her, his gaze sharp, unreadable.
Jayden: “You love us?”
Jessica: “Did I say that out loud?”
Jayden: “Yeah. You did.”
A faint blush touched her cheeks, but she didn’t look away.
Jessica: “I guess I do.”
For a man used to control, Jayden suddenly looked undone — the beast inside him stirring, restless.
Jayden: “You shouldn’t. My world isn’t kind.”
Jessica: “Neither is mine. But somehow, you make it bearable.”
He exhaled, leaning back, running a hand over his face.
Jayden: “You know what happens when I get angry, Jess. There’s something in me… something I fight every day.”
Jessica: “Then let me help you fight it.”
Jayden: “You don’t know what you’re asking.”
Jessica: “I do. You protect everyone else. Let someone protect you for once.”
He stared at her like she was a miracle he didn’t believe in. The night hummed softly with energy — the sound of the city fading under the rhythm of their breaths.
Jayden: “When you talk like that, the thing inside me… quiets.”
Jessica: “Then maybe it’s not a monster. Maybe it’s just you — the part that loves too hard.”
His chest rose slowly, the edge in his eyes softening.
Jayden: “Jess…”
Jessica: “Jay.”
He reached out, fingers brushing against hers, hesitant — then firm.
Jayden: “You scare me.”
Jessica: “Good. That means you care.”
The silence that followed wasn’t empty; it was full — of heartbeats, of unsaid words, of trust.
He moved closer, his forehead resting lightly against hers.
Jayden: “I don’t want to hurt you.”
Jessica: “Then don’t.”
For once, there were no walls between them — just warmth, breath, and the sound of the night.
