Episode 14 â Hearts Unmasked (Part 2)
The night air was still, every sound amplified â the whisper of wind through the leaves, the faint hum of city lights far below. Jessica stayed still, forehead against Jaydenâs, feeling the steady rhythm of his breath.
Jessica: âYou know, for a man feared by half of Johannesburg, youâre very gentle.â
Jayden: âOnly with you.â
Jessica: âWhy?â
Jayden: âBecause you make me want to be.â
He drew back just enough to meet her gaze. There was fire there, yes â but also something vulnerable.
Jessica: âYou donât have to keep pretending, Jay. Not with me.â
Jayden: âPretending?â
Jessica: âThat youâre only a beast. Youâre not. Youâre human first.â
He let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head.
Jayden: âYou talk like someone whoâs seen both heaven and hell.â
Jessica: âMaybe I have. But tonight feels like neither.â
She stood, walking a few steps toward the balcony overlooking the gardens. He followed, stopping just behind her.
Jayden: âJessâŠâ
Jessica: âHmm?â
Jayden: âIâve never let anyone close enough to see me lose control. Not even my brothers.â
Jessica: âAnd now?â
Jayden: âNow Iâm terrified because I want to.â
Her hand found his â small but steady.
Jessica: âThen donât fight it. Whateverâs inside you, Iâm not afraid of it.â
Jayden: âYou should be.â
Jessica: âYou think darkness scares me? I lived in it for years, Jay. I made it my weapon.â
He stepped closer, his chest against her back, his breath warm against her ear.
Jayden: âYouâre fire, Jessica. You burn through every defense Iâve ever built.â
Jessica: âThen stop building them.â
He turned her around, his hand resting lightly against her jaw, tilting her face up.
Jayden: âYou make this sound so easy.â
Jessica: âLoving me never will be. But itâll be real.â
Something shifted then â quiet but powerful. The tension between them wasnât about fear anymore; it was about surrender.
Jayden brushed his thumb along her cheek, tracing the faint line of a scar sheâd once tried to hide.
Jayden: âYou always look like youâre holding back.â
Jessica: âMaybe because I donât know what happens when I stop.â
Jayden: âThen find out.â
She did. She leaned in first, a soft, uncertain kiss â not out of passion but trust. He answered it gently, like someone afraid to wake from a dream.
When they finally pulled apart, neither spoke.
Jayden: âYou couldâve run a long time ago.â
Jessica: âI donât run from things worth staying for.â
He smiled â a real one, unguarded and warm.
Jayden: âIf you stay, youâll see all of me. Even the beast.â
Jessica: âThen Iâll just have to tame it.â
A low laugh escaped him, rough and tender all at once.
Jayden: âGod help me, you might.â
The night stretched on â no war, no enemies, no blood. Just two people finding peace where neither expected it.
When Jessica finally fell asleep in his arms, Jayden stayed awake a while longer, watching her. For the first time in years, the thing inside him â that wild, ancient force â didnât rage. It purred.
