Episode 14 – Hearts Unmasked (Part 3) Morning broke softly over the Khumalo estate. Light spilled through the curtains, golden and warm, brushing across the sheets like a promise. Jessica stirred first, eyes blinking open to the unfamiliar stillness. For the first time in forever, she hadn’t woken to the sound of an alarm, a keyboard, or gunfire. Jessica: “You’re awake already.” Jayden: “I didn’t sleep.” Jessica: “Bad dreams?” Jayden: “No. I just didn’t want to miss this.” She smiled faintly, sitting up, the sheet sliding from her shoulders. Jessica: “You always say things that sound like they come from a movie.” Jayden: “Maybe I’m just trying to keep up with you.” She laughed softly, the sound low and real — something he didn’t know he needed until now. Jessica: “You’re impossible.” Jayden: “And you’re dangerous.” Jessica: “That’s why we work.” He watched her in the morning light — the woman who could level systems and hearts with the same precision. Something in him shifted again, deeper this time, primal and old. His vision blurred for a moment, the world trembling around him. The beast stirred. Jessica: “Jayden?” Jayden: “I’m fine. Just… dizzy.” His eyes flashed — gold for a second, then back to human brown. Jessica froze, heart racing, but she didn’t back away. Jessica: “That wasn’t dizziness.” Jayden: “You weren’t supposed to see that.” Jessica: “You think you can hide something like that from me?” He looked away, jaw tightening. Jayden: “It’s not human, Jess. It’s part of our bloodline. Jason and I — we were born with it.” Jessica: “What is it?” Jayden: “A beast. A spirit older than this world. It protects us, gives us power… but it takes, too. It feeds on rage, fear, pain. Once it wakes fully, it’s hard to control.” Jessica stepped closer, unafraid. Jessica: “And when it wakes?” Jayden: “It destroys everything I care about.” Jessica: “Then I guess it’s lucky I’m not afraid.” He looked at her like he wanted to argue — but couldn’t. Jayden: “You don’t understand what you saw.” Jessica: “Maybe not. But I understand you.” She reached out, placing her palm over his chest. Jessica: “It’s not trying to destroy you. It’s trying to connect with me, isn’t it?” Jayden: “How would you even know that?” Jessica: “Because when your eyes changed, I didn’t feel fear. I felt… recognition.” He stared at her, shock and wonder flickering in his gaze. Jayden: “Recognition?” Jessica: “Like it already knew me.” The silence between them turned heavy again, charged. Jayden: “Jess, there are legends in my family — stories about how the beast chooses a mate. A soul that can balance its power. But those are myths.” Jessica: “Then maybe myths have a reason to exist.” He exhaled slowly, his hand covering hers. Jayden: “If that’s true, then you’re in more danger than you realize.” Jessica: “I’ve been in danger since birth, Jay. This doesn’t scare me.” She tilted her head slightly, eyes locked on his. Jessica: “Let’s find out what it means. Together.” For a long time, he said nothing — and then nodded once, a silent vow. Jayden: “Together.”
