50. The Last Stand

A dozer roared onto the cutting site and a band of thirty protesters linked arms to block its way. The driver paused, then raised the blade, revved his engine, and advanced slowly toward them. The protesters backed up ten feet then dug in their heels. The driver halted and jerked forward in increments, the tank-like tread mashing the ground. Jessica Wild arrived, and instantly assessing the situation, drove between the protesters and the tank, squealing to a halt. She jumped out of the car waving papers, “One step further and we’ll charge you with assault,” she yelled. Cox yanked a rifle away from one of the security guards and strode up to her aiming the rifle at her. “One more step and I’ll shoot your a*s. Get off my land.
