“You're thinking too much, the majority of club members just want to fight to prove that they're cool and they think that a bloodied appearance is a sign of being ferocious. The rest was just because you look good.” Kayad interrupted Sorrel’s whirl of thoughts with a slight smile. It was cute the way Sorrel was worried he was missing some integral part of human conversation.
Though the thought of Carla’s attempts to hit him had Kayad flexing his hands as he struggled to reign in the desire to go put her out of his misery. Still the amount of Sorrel’s poison that she had taken in moderated Kayad’s murderous desire. Though not enough to kill the poison would leave her sickly for at least a week even after the school treated her since they would not be looking for her having ingested trace amounts of oleander. Served her right.
“Really.” Sorrel asked in response to Kayad’s comment. Kayad nodded reassuringly before he flicked a look at the two wolves in front of them who had turned around to stare. The pair started and turned back to face front sitting up straight as the bell went and Dr Northwood strode into the room.
Dr Northwood had a commanding presence so when he entered the room the students naturally quietened down. “Good morning class, as you may have noticed we have a new student. Sorrel Serie, he has just transferred here after being previously homeschooled. The flowers are a religious remembrance of his deceased parents. I also have heard that he is the leader of a new club in BIRD and has just bumped their position into the top ten. So, congratulations.”
Kayad’s expression darkened as he contemplated his original intentions. Dr Northwood was someone Kayad had already cleared from being involved in the Beastskin rage poisoning. In his last life Dr Northwood had been the unreported first victim twice over. Losing both his wife and son, both Squirlskins, to what was later determined to be the drugs trial run. Kayad had been unable to save the wife as he had not known the time and place of the infection, but his son he had saved by sheer luck, managing to meet the boy when he’d run out and prevented him from being taken. Kayad had thus intended to leave Dr Northwood in, since the rest of the teachers were not so clear cut. However, if he was going to make things difficult or upsetting for Sorrel then he could just leave to take care of his son elsewhere.
Instead of an offended or concerned reaction Sorrel just nodded in response and watched Dr Northwood with a look of expectancy.
Kayad mentally rolled his eyes. How could he forget that Sorrel was not likely to even think that the comment was meant to be anything but explanatory. Though a few of the other kids laughed and two of the members of the second and third ranked club in BIRD turned to look at Sorrel Kayad marked them down for dealing with later. There was nothing funny in that sentence and they had better not think of trying anything with Sorrel. Kayad would just have to deter that. Hard.
The lesson was a quick rehash of trigonometry with a small session on algebraic formula substitutions. Sorrel followed along carefully taking notes on everything though when it came time to do the worksheets he didn’t bother to check his notes before answering.
Kayad didn’t bother taking notes, he just answered the questions by rote. Even if he’d missed things the first time round having understood enough of the basics to graduate the brief refresher was all he needed. So Kayad watched Sorrel instead, it was infinitely more interesting.
“Kayad, do you have the answer for question 15?” Mr Northwood asked.
Kayad flicked him a look before saying, “a=2x.” Having received a response Mr Northwood went on to torture a different student. Well the bell chimed for the change of class Kayad waited for Sorrel to stand before he followed him out of the class. Kayad smiled when Sorrel turned back to look at him with the note about his English class in his hand. Not that Kayad needed it. He had made sure that we would be in the same classes already.
Even if something changed and Sorrel chose something different Kayad had made careful arrangements for him to be ‘transferred’ due to unfavourable circumstances to the right classes. Wasn’t even hard, he’d been kicked out of and shifted through enough classes last time that if he couldn’t then that would have been incompetent.
So just like he was ‘unfortunately’ held back a year to ‘conveniently’ be in the same year group he would ‘coincidentally’ be in the same classes. He was just lucky that it had been easy to determine what classes Sorrel took in first year by what he showed by third year. Though Kayad intended for Sorrel to tell him about what classes he was picking before he signed up come second term. If not as a partner than as a very good friend. Kayad didn’t have Jasper’s patience for pursuit but needs must.
Besides since Kayad intended to be very close to whatever Sorrel did he would be in a good position to keep any pesky insects away from his treasure. If that meant swatting a few flies than he would. Though he didn’t expect many others to be as brazen as Carla. That girl was just plain bold, and he hopped that this time she’d learn to stay away. After all Kayad wouldn’t want Sorrel thinking anything off about his interactions with the succubi. He’d save enjoying Sorrel’s jealousy till when he could kiss it better.
