The Bullet That Changed Everything

1050 Words
The journal snapped shut. Silence consumed the underground archive. No one moved. No one breathed. Alina stared at Lucien, her mind struggling to accept what she had just heard. "I was the one who asked you to kill me." The words echoed endlessly inside her head. Lucien stood motionless, his silver eyes fixed on the journal resting upon the crystal pedestal. "I never wanted you to know like this," he whispered. Alina slowly looked up. "Then tell me." Lucien closed his eyes. "I will." "But not here." --- Outside... A single finger tightened around a trigger. Hidden nearly a kilometer away, the sniper watched through a thermal scope. The crosshair rested perfectly over Alina's heart. A voice crackled through his earpiece. "Confirm the target." "The Queen has been identified." "Permission granted." "One shot." "No mistakes." The sniper smiled. "I never miss." He pulled the trigger. --- The silence shattered. The high-caliber round screamed through the forest at nearly three times the speed of sound. It tore through branches. Shattered a stone statue. And raced toward the archive window. EVA reacted instantly. "MASTER!" Lucien disappeared. The bullet struck his outstretched hand. Instead of piercing his palm... It stopped. Floating. Only centimeters from Alina's chest. The entire room stared in disbelief. The spinning bullet glowed red from the friction it had generated. Lucien slowly closed his fingers. The steel projectile crumbled into fine black dust. His voice was calm. "They found us." --- The manor erupted into chaos. Security drones launched from hidden compartments beneath the gardens. Energy shields rose around the estate. Armed guards poured from underground bunkers. EVA's voice echoed through every corridor. "LEVEL OMEGA DEFENSE PROTOCOL." "ALL PERSONNEL TO BATTLE STATIONS." Kael smiled. "Now it's getting interesting." Lucien gave him a cold look. "This isn't a game." "It never was." --- The forest surrounding Vale Estate came alive. Hundreds of figures emerged silently from the trees. Some wore black combat armor equipped with advanced weapons. Others carried ancient swords glowing with celestial runes. At their center stood a woman dressed in white armor trimmed with gold. Her silver hair flowed in the wind. Six golden wings of pure light spread behind her. She removed her helmet. Her emerald eyes fixed upon the manor. "So..." "The Queen truly lives." One of the soldiers bowed. "Commander Seraphine." "Shall we attack?" Seraphine shook her head. "Not yet." She looked toward the mansion. "I want to see whether Lucien still remembers how to lose." --- Inside the archive... Alina watched dozens of holographic screens appear around them. Each displayed a different part of the estate. Enemy forces were advancing from every direction. "They're surrounding us." Lucien nodded. "They've been planning this for years." Kael folded his arms. "No." "They've been planning this for centuries." --- Suddenly, Martha entered the archive. She no longer looked like a gentle housekeeper. She wore black battle armor beneath her dress. A long obsidian spear rested in her hands. She bowed to Lucien. "The household guard is ready." Alina blinked. "You can fight?" Martha smiled warmly. "My Queen..." "I trained your royal guard long before I learned to bake your favorite cinnamon bread." Kael laughed. "She once broke my arm." "It was both arms," Martha corrected. "And you deserved it." For the first time since entering the manor... Lucien smiled. --- The smile vanished as the estate shook violently. A massive explosion echoed outside. One of the outer walls collapsed. Smoke poured across the gardens. EVA reported immediately. "North Gate breached." "Enemy casualties: zero." Lucien frowned. "They're testing our defenses." "No," Martha replied. "They're looking for weakness." --- Deep beneath the estate... The journal resting on the pedestal began glowing once more. Without anyone touching it... Its pages turned rapidly. Ancient words appeared across every page. Alina stepped closer. The ink wasn't black. It shimmered like liquid silver. One sentence slowly formed. "Trust no memory that comes without pain." Another sentence appeared beneath it. "Someone still walks among you wearing a borrowed face." Kael's expression darkened. "What does that mean?" Lucien looked around the chamber. "There is a traitor." --- Before anyone could react... Every light inside the archive went out. The emergency generators failed. Only the Heart of Obsidian illuminated the darkness. Footsteps echoed through the room. Slow. Measured. Confident. A familiar voice broke the silence. "You finally read the journal." Lucien spun around. "Father." Emperor Azrael stood at the entrance. Alone. No guards. No army. He looked exactly as he had appeared on the holographic screens, yet standing before him in person was far more terrifying. Power radiated from him like heat from the sun. Even the air bent around him. He looked first at Lucien. Then Kael. Finally... his gaze rested on Alina. His expression softened. "You have her eyes." Lucien stepped between them. "You are not welcome here." Azrael smiled. "I built this estate." He slowly walked inside, examining the room with nostalgic eyes. "I planted the first cherry blossom tree outside." "I designed this archive." "And that journal..." He pointed toward the pedestal. "...was my wedding gift to Aeloria." The room froze. Even Lucien looked stunned. "You never told me that," Kael whispered. "There are many things neither of you know." Azrael's voice carried neither anger nor pride. Only sadness. He turned toward Alina. "You deserve the whole truth." "The war did not begin because kingdoms wanted power." "It began because someone discovered a force capable of rewriting life itself." He looked directly into the Heart of Obsidian around her neck. "And that force..." "...chose you." Before anyone could ask another question... A deafening roar echoed from the forest. The windows exploded inward. A colossal beast covered in black crystal burst through the gardens. It stood nearly thirty feet tall. Its eyes burned crimson. Its body resembled a wolf... but its back was lined with jagged obsidian spikes. Every guard outside opened fire. The bullets shattered harmlessly against its skin. The beast raised its head toward the sky... and howled. The sound echoed across Beijing. Miles away... Deep beneath the Seventh Gate... Something answered. A second howl. Much louder. Much older. Lucien slowly drew the Nightfall Blade. His silver eyes narrowed. "The Devourer knows where she is." And for the first time... the monster hunting Alina had found the scent of its prey.
