The Man Who Sat Beyond the Stars

934 Words
The stars were dying. Not exploding. Not fading. They simply... ceased to exist. One after another, distant suns vanished from the night sky as though an unseen hand was extinguishing candles across the universe. Inside every observatory on Earth, scientists watched in horror. No known law of physics could explain what they were seeing. --- Far beyond the orbit of Pluto... Beyond the edge of the Solar System... Beyond even the reach of human satellites... An enormous black citadel drifted through the void. It was not a spaceship. It was a kingdom. Forged from obsidian darker than space itself. At its center stood a throne unlike any ever created. It wasn't carved. It had grown. As if the universe itself had shaped the crystal. Upon that throne sat the figure known only in whispers. Emperor Azrael. His face was hidden beneath a crown of living black crystal. One eye shone silver. The other glowed molten gold. The blood of Lucien and Kael flowed through him. He was their creator. Their father. --- Azrael slowly stood. The galaxy seemed to tremble. "My sons have failed to remain hidden." His voice echoed through the empty universe. "And she has returned." A woman dressed in crimson armor stepped from the shadows and knelt. "My Emperor." "Speak, Seraphine." "The Celestial Vanguard has engaged Lucien Vale." Azrael smiled faintly. "They never learn." "They believe strength decides destiny." He looked toward the distant blue planet called Earth. "They forget..." "...love is always the greater weakness." --- Back above Beijing... Lucien and the Celestial continued their battle. Every collision shook the atmosphere. Clouds spiraled around them like giant hurricanes. The Celestial unleashed thousands of golden blades formed from pure energy. Lucien closed his eyes. The black crystal ring on his finger glowed. A wall of obsidian light appeared before him. Every blade shattered upon impact. Without opening his eyes, Lucien whispered, "Enough." The air around him darkened. Black lightning erupted from the sky. For a heartbeat... day became night. The Celestial's wings cracked. Then shattered. He fell toward Earth like a burning star. --- The impact echoed across northern Beijing. An abandoned industrial district disappeared beneath a cloud of dust. Concrete crumbled. Steel twisted. The Celestial lay inside a massive crater. His once radiant armor was fractured. Golden blood stained the broken earth. Lucien descended silently into the crater. He looked down at his defeated enemy. "You should have stayed beyond the Veil." The Celestial laughed weakly. "You still don't understand." Lucien frowned. "Understand what?" "We weren't sent to kill the Queen." Lucien's expression hardened. "Then why are you here?" The Celestial smiled through blood. "To warn her." --- Inside Raven Tower... Alina felt an unbearable pain in her chest. The Heart of Obsidian pulsed wildly. She fell to one knee. Kael caught her before she hit the floor. Her eyes suddenly turned completely black. Not the color of darkness. The color of deep space. She spoke in a voice that wasn't hers. "The Seventh Gate..." "It must never open." EVA immediately began scanning every historical archive. "No records found." Kael whispered, "There aren't supposed to be." --- Lucien stared at the wounded Celestial. "What is the Seventh Gate?" The Celestial coughed. "You sealed six." "But the seventh..." "...was never closed." Lucien's breathing slowed. "No." "That's impossible." "You believed your father was imprisoned." "He is." "Only his body." The Celestial's smile widened. "You never asked where his soul went." --- At that exact moment... Every screen inside Raven Tower flashed with static. EVA froze. Her holographic form flickered violently. "Master..." "My systems..." "They're being overwritten." Lucien immediately contacted her through his neural link. "EVA!" She didn't answer. Instead... Every display in the tower showed the same face. Emperor Azrael. He wasn't speaking through a recording. He was looking directly at them. As though he could see everyone inside the tower. His voice was calm. Warm. Almost fatherly. "My sons." Lucien's face became stone. Kael's playful smile disappeared. Neither of them spoke. Azrael chuckled. "Seven centuries." "And neither of you has visited." His gaze shifted toward Alina. There was no hatred in his eyes. Only curiosity. "So..." "This is the child who inherited the Crown." Alina forced herself to stand. "Who are you?" Azrael bowed his head slightly. "I am the first king." "The last emperor." "And the architect of everything you believe to be history." He smiled gently. "But to Lucien..." "...I am simply Father." --- No one spoke. Azrael continued. "You believe I destroyed your kingdom." Lucien interrupted. "You did." "No." "I tried to save it." Kael looked uncertain. For the first time... even he wasn't sure whom to believe. Azrael's gaze never left Alina. "The memories returning to you..." "They are incomplete." "You have seen who held the knife." "But you still haven't seen..." "...who asked him to." The words struck Lucien like a blade. "Don't." Azrael ignored him. "Tell her the truth." Lucien looked away. His silence answered everything. Alina's voice trembled. "What truth?" Lucien closed his eyes. "The night Aeloria died..." "I made a choice." "A choice that has haunted me every day for seven hundred years." Before he could continue... The tower shook with a force unlike anything before. Deep beneath Raven Tower... an ancient mechanism awakened. One that Lucien himself had sealed centuries ago. EVA's voice returned, distorted and weak. "Emergency..." "The Seventh Gate..." "...is opening." Miles below Beijing... Hidden beneath layers of stone older than civilization... seven colossal obsidian doors stood in a perfect circle. The first six remained sealed. The seventh... slowly began to open. And from the darkness beyond it... something breathed.
