Second Visit: What’s the Source of His Magic?

271 Words
Several soldiers enter the room behind Detective Guber. “Harry, Brutus, get him out,” Detective Guber says. “We cannot touch him.” A young, male soldier steps forward. “There is gas coming in now.” Maxwell’s head begins to pound. “You may want to step out,” the WIC soldier says to Detective Guber. “When he falls, you or Sarah can restrain him.” Detective Guber throws his hands in the air. “Is his magic still that strong?” “Yes,” the soldier answers. “We believe it is.” “That b***h. We owe her another visit.” “Uhm…too many of us got cut off the last time we…” The soldier clears his throat. “...visited her.” He tugs at the collar of his shirt. “We need to preserve who we have left…Sir.” He clears his throat again. Detective Guber throws his hands up in the air. “Fine. Have Sarah restrain him once the gas has knocked him out.” Detective Guber backs out of the room. “We need to come up with a permanent solution for that meddling old witch.” Maxwell’s head swells; all he can focus on is the pounding. The room darkens; he falls. “You should have stayed away.” A familiar voice. “Why did you come back?” He’s in the in-between state of sleep and wakefulness. He can’t say if this is a dream from reality. “Sleep. Rest. She will come to you.” A gentle hand on his cheek; then the person leaves the room.
