The days following were nothing short of normal. We went to work and came home. We talked about changing the house to accommodate my stuff. Before I knew it, it was Thursday and we were sitting to dinner.
“I just think changing the colors sounds like work.” I said looking at the walls. David laughed as he took a bite.
“You said you would love it if it were lighter in here. I’m fond of the darker colors.” David said.
“Can we get someone else to paint it?” I asked and David nodded.
“Sure, if you’re that set on changing the colors. We’ll get someone to paint it. As long as we both agree on the new color.” David said.
“Yay!” I clapped. I went to take a bite and we heard a tapping at the door.
“Were you expecting someone?” I asked looking from him to the hall behind us.
“No.” He said getting up and going to the door. After a moment David came in and shrugged. Bradly followed him closely behind.
“But then mom told me to just come ask myself and I said ok! Dad was busy getting the house ready for grandpa’s visit tomorrow and won’t even notice I’m gone.” Bradly said coming over and sitting by me. I looked from David to Bradly.
“Hello.” I said and he smiled.
“Hi!” He said happily.
“His mom got sick of his questions I guess.” David said continuing to eat.
“What’s human school like?” Bradly asked.
“What? Oh uh… it’s probably a lot like your school. Math, history, writing, science… ya know.” I said.
“Wow! Ours has pack history and training. Do you guys do training?” Bradly asked.
“Training?” I asked.
“You know? Like they teach you how to track and mind link.” I stared at him.
“Um no. We have gym class but we mostly just do sit ups and track stuff.” I said and he stared in awe.
“Like see who runs the fastest?” He asked and I looked at David who still eating.
“It’s more just everyone walks or runs as a group.” I said. “What’s mind linking?” I asked looking from Bradly to David.
“Uncle David didn’t tell you? We use our minds to talk. I can’t do it yet, but I’m close.” Bradly said and I looked at David.
“You guys can use your minds to communicate?” I asked looking at David.
“Yeah, thanks for ratting me out Brad!” David said.
“I didn’t know it was a secret!” Bradly said looking back at me. “What’s war like?” Bradly asked and I choked on my drink. David started to laugh.
“Contrary to what your mom says, the humans aren’t always at war.” David said.
“Really? Dad says there’s always a war some where.” Brad said.
“I’ve never been to war little man, so I wouldn’t know.” I said and he smiled.
“I want to tell you a secret but I don’t want uncle David to know.” Bradly looked at David and he looked at us both.
“Why can’t I know the secret?” David asked.
“You can’t tell mom and dad if I tell you.” Bradly said and we looked at each other.
“Ok, shoot.” David said.
“I made a couple human friends and I want to relate to them. So far all we talk about is our trading cards, but I’m worried they’re going to know me and Kyle are different.” Bradly said and I looked at David.
“Kyle is his best friend. Where did you meet human kids?” David asked curiously.
“They live in Packwood. They were playing in the woods and that’s when we saw them.” Bradly said.
“The kids were alone in the woods?” David asked and Bradly nodded.
“Wait why were you and Kyle alone in the woods?” I asked.
“Looking for spiders.” He answered quickly.
“Why would you… you know what I don’t think I want to know why someone would need a spider.” I said and David tried not to laugh.
“Bradly I don’t think your mom wants you going to Packwood alone.” David said.
“That’s why it’s a secret uncle David.” Bradly said like he was some kind of i***t.
“Aren’t the woods dangerous?” I asked.
“They’re usually not too bad around here. George keeps them pretty safe.” David said.
“Kendra and Austin’s mom let them play between the towns.” Bradly said.
“Kendra and Austin huh?” David said.
“Yeah! We’re the same age. Kendra is a really good climber and she has a lot of holographic rare cards.” Bradly said almost excited.
“Oh yeah?” I said with a smile.
“Yeah! Austin gets really upset when she gets really high and he doesn’t believe me when I said I would catch her if she falls.” Bradly said and I snickered.
“Sounds like you like her.” I poked fun.
“No! She’s just my friend!” Bradly got mad.
“It’s ok bud. Is this why you wanted to come over? You wanted to pretend to be more human?” David asked and Bradly slowly nodded.
“I don’t have to worry about transforming. I don’t get my wolf for awhile, but I don’t want to sound weird and she asked me what my favorite subject in school was. I told it was recess when really it’s training because I love to smack the dummy with the wooden sword!” Bradly said with a look on his face of determination.
“Sword?” I asked.
“Ironridge doesn’t do much when it comes to training. They touch on combat, but they mostly do wilderness survival training.” David said.
“I’m so good at tracking Aunt Ryan. Just like my dad! He’s the best tracker in the whole pack!” Bradly bragged.
“Oh yeah? That’s really cool. You’ll have to show me sometime.” I said and he smiled.
“Tomorrow! Can we go tomorrow?” Bradly asked.
“No bud, grandpa is coming.” David said.
“After we see grandpa?” Bradly whined.
“We’ll see.” David said and he smiled. David’s phone started to go off and he pulled it out. “Looks like you were wrong! Your dad is looking for you.” David said.
“No! I want to stay! Can I stay the night?” Bradly asked and as he grabbed onto my arm.
“Well it’s a big day for Ryan. She’s meeting grandpa so she needs her rest.” David said saving me from a night of questioning.
“Oh noooo, can I stay tomorrow?” Bradly asked.
“If it’s ok with your mom.” I said and David shot me a look.
“I’ll go ask right now!” Bradly hopped out of the chair and ran to the door way and paused. “Bye!” He yelled turning back once more. We heard the door slam.
“George is practically going to throw him over here. They are going to leave for like the Bahamas and we’ll be stuck teaching him Dodge ball or something!” David said almost upset.
“Dodge ball isn’t really a three person game.” I said.
“Regardless Ryan!” David sat there a moment. “That was the most I’ve seen him calm and not trying to put bugs in people’s stuff.” David said.
“Are you saying he likes me?” I asked and David’s phone buzzed again. He glanced at it.
“I guess so because Harmony is a excited yes to Bradly staying here tomorrow.” David sighed.
