Chapter 2 Illyra's Pov I was at work but I wasn't thinking straight, I had paid for a cheap motel last night to make sure my mum has a decent rest, I don't know how today might end up for me. "Oh my God, he's looking at me!" Sarah whispered excitedly, her blonde hair cascading over her shoulders as she pushed her chest forward. Her blue eyes sparkled with hope as she balanced a tray of expensive champagne glasses. "No way, he's totally staring at me," another waitress named Jessica argued back, flipping her long brown hair over her shoulder. Her tight black dress hugged her curves perfectly, and she made sure to sway her hips as she walked. "Did you see how his eyes followed me when I walked past?" I rolled my eyes as I continued pouring drinks behind the marble bar counter. The club was dimly lit with purple and blue neon lights that danced across the walls, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. While they were all giggling and fighting over who the sexy Alpha was looking at, I was thinking of ways to die and leave my mother behind. My hands shook as I poured glass after glass of Dom Pérignon, Hennessy, and Grey Goose vodka, watching the other girls serve them to customers. Their red-painted nails clicked against the expensive crystal glasses as they worked. I wasn't even concentrating on what I was doing. All I could think about was how impossible this task was. The amber liquid splashed slightly as my trembling fingers held the bottles. I couldn't take it anymore. My chest felt tight with anxiety, and sweat was forming on my forehead despite the air conditioning. I tapped one of them named Lucy on the shoulder. She was tall and slender with striking green eyes and perfectly applied makeup that made her look like a magazine model. "Hey, would it be possible to see Alpha Kaelen? I heard he frequently comes here at night." The entire group stopped what they were doing and stared at me like I was a piece of garbage. Their perfectly contoured faces twisted with disbelief and amusement. Then they burst out laughing, their high-pitched giggles echoing through the bar area. "Oh my God, she's so daft!" Lucy said, wiping tears from her eyes with her manicured fingers. "Did you just say his name like that? Like you know him personally?" "The fact that she looks like a worn-out nerd in disguise of the work uniform and she's asking to see him," Jessica added, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "That's something so daft!" My face burned with embarrassment as I looked down at myself. They were right – I did look out of place. My uniform was a simple black dress that hung loosely on my thin frame, nothing like their tight, revealing outfits. My brown hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail, and I wasn't wearing any makeup. My pale skin looked even paler under the club's harsh lighting. I swallowed hard, feeling tears burn behind my eyes. Just then, my former colleague from my old job, Rendell, came over with a serious expression on his face. He was a tall man with dark skin and kind eyes, someone who had always been nice to me when we worked together at the restaurant. His black hair was neatly styled, and he wore the club's standard uniform black pants and a crisp white shirt. "Illyra, you have a special order to serve the people at the VIP pool," he said, his voice cutting through the girls' laughter. The other girls gasped, their laughter dying immediately. Their eyes widened with shock and jealousy as they processed what he had just said. "That's impossible," Sarah said, her voice filled with disbelief. Her perfectly plucked eyebrows shot up as she shook her head. "She just started working here yesterday. They must have made a mistake." "The Lycan Alpha would always be specific about who to serve him," Lucy added, crossing her arms over her chest. Her green eyes narrowed as she looked me up and down again. "There's no way he asked for her specifically." I felt panic rising in my chest like a tidal wave. My heart started beating so fast I thought it might burst out of my ribs. Was he here? I looked around the club and noticed there was a structure upstairs where the VIPs were, and there was indeed a pool area. No wonder they kept looking up there and saying he was looking their way. "I... I don't understand," I muttered, trying to process what was happening. My voice came out shaky and small. Rendell shrugged, his expression sympathetic. "All I know is, that's what the boss told me. You better take this wine and serve it, or we'll all be in trouble." He held out a bottle of Château Margaux, one of the most expensive wines in the club. The dark bottle felt heavy in my hands, and I could see the elegant label with its gold lettering. I reached for the wine bottle, but Lucy beat me to it and snatched it from my hands with her perfectly manicured fingers. "I'll take it," she said with a smug smile, her glossy lips curving upward. "She's obviously not ready for this kind of responsibility." My heart was beating fast as I watched her walk toward the VIP stairs, her heels clicking against the marble floor. Her confident stride and the way she tossed her hair made her look like she owned the place. I couldn't miss this opportunity, even though I had no idea what to say or how to approach him. This might be my only chance to get close to Kaelen and somehow get that key. It wasn't even a minute before Lucy came back down the stairs with tears streaming down her face. Her perfect makeup was running, creating dark streaks down her cheeks. Her confident posture was gone, replaced by shaking shoulders and trembling hands. "I'm fired," she said, her voice shaking with humiliation. "The boss said I dared to disrespect the Lycan King's demands by coming instead of who he asked for." Rendell smirked and looked at me, his dark eyes serious. "You better go up there and behave yourself, or you'll be fired next." I swallowed hard and took the wine bottle with trembling hands. The glass felt cold against my sweaty palms. Each step up those stairs felt like I was walking toward my own execution. The music from downstairs became muffled as I climbed higher, and the sounds of laughter and conversation faded away. That's when I smelled it – something that made my knees weak and my heart race even faster. His cologne alone could make any girl moan in satisfaction. It was deep and masculine, with hints of sandalwood making my body respond in ways I didn't understand. As I reached the top of the stairs, I saw him, and my breath caught in my throat. Kaelen Draven was even more intimidating in person than in any photo I had seen. He was sitting by the infinity pool in a perfectly tailored black suit that looked like it cost more than my entire life savings. The fabric stretched across his broad shoulders and muscular chest, and I could see the outline of his powerful frame underneath. His dark hair was slightly messy like he'd been running his fingers through it, and it fell across his forehead in a way that made him look dangerously handsome. His skin was olive-toned and smooth, with sharp cheekbones and a strong jaw that was covered with just a hint of stubble. But it was his eyes that made me freeze completely. They were the darkest shade of brown I had ever seen, almost black, and they seemed to burn into my soul with such an intense stare that I started shaking. "Leave us," his deep voice commanded the other men who were sitting with him. His voice was like velvet wrapped around steel but dangerous. It sent shivers down my spine and made my stomach flutter with nervousness. The other men immediately stood up and walked away without question, their expensive suits rustling as they moved. I stood there holding the wine bottle, not knowing what to do or say. "Your name," he said, his voice sending more shivers down my spine. "Illyra," I managed to whisper, my eyes automatically going to his neck where I could see the necklace. The goddamn key he was wearing. It was right there, so close I could almost reach out and touch it. The jade stone caught the light and seemed to glow with its own inner fire. I noticed he was staring at me sexually without any shame, his dark eyes traveling up and down my body like he was undressing me with his mind. His gaze lingered on my curves, what little I had, and I could see something dangerous flickering in his eyes. I hated how my body felt heated under his intense stare, how someone so powerful was willing to look at me like I was actually a woman worth wanting. But then his next words made me snap back to reality. "Name your price," he said casually, leaning back in his chair. His voice was smooth and confident, like he was used to getting whatever he wanted. "You've successfully gotten my attention and got me hard. I want you." "I am not a slut!" I exploded, my voice echoing around the pool area. All the fear and frustration I had been holding inside came pouring out. "You should never in your life treat women like one just because you have it all!" He smirked, his lips curving upward in a way that was both sexy and infuriating. His dark eyes gleamed with amusement, like my outburst had entertained him. "You seem to know a lot about me." Without another word, he stood up and walked away, his powerful frame moving with the grace of a predator. I watched him go, my heart pounding and my hands still shaking. I tried to calm my breathing down, but my heart was racing. I walked over to the wall and hit my head against it, feeling the cool surface against my burning skin. "Stupid, stupid, stupid," I muttered to myself. "He wants to have s*x with me. How am I supposed to do this?" The rest of my shift passed in a blur. I served drinks mechanically, my mind racing with thoughts of what had just happened. Every time I looked up at the VIP area, I could see him sitting there, occasionally glancing in my direction with that same intense stare that made my stomach flip. By evening, I couldn't take it anymore. My nerves were completely shot, and I felt like I was going to have a panic attack. I picked up my phone with shaking fingers and called Derek. "He wants to sleep with me," I said as soon as he answered, my voice cracking with emotion. "I can't do it. There has to be another way!" "You're very stupid!" Derek yelled through the phone, his voice so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear. "What is your useless cunt useful for then?" I felt tears streaming down my face, hot and salty as they ran down my cheeks. "Please, there has to be another way. I can't—" Suddenly, I heard my mother's voice in the background, crying and yelling. Her weak, fragile voice was filled with terror, and my blood turned to ice. "Mom?" I screamed into the phone, my voice breaking completely. "She's next to die if you don't bring me that key," Derek's voice was cold and merciless, like he was talking about the weather instead of my mother's life. What followed next was a sound that made my world stop completely. A gunshot echoed through the phone, loud and final, and I screamed so loud that everyone in the club turned to look at me. "NO!" I cried, falling to my knees on the cold marble floor. "MOM!"
