Chapter 1 : The Wounded Wolf

1002 Words
The forest always felt alive to Zara Adeyemi. Even in silence, she could hear its quiet rhythm—the whisper of wind through ancient trees, the rustle of leaves beneath hidden creatures, the distant cry of birds settling for the night. But tonight, something felt wrong. Too still. Zara slowed her steps along the narrow path that wound through the dense woodland outside her research station in Oyo State. Her boots pressed softly against the damp earth as she scanned the surroundings with trained eyes. Normally this part of the forest was busy with life. Bushbucks grazing near the shrubs. Monkeys arguing in the treetops. Birds calling to each other as the sun disappeared behind the hills. Tonight there was nothing. The silence pressed against her ears in an unsettling way. She tightened her grip on the flashlight hanging from her wrist and checked the small device in her other hand. One of the camera traps had triggered earlier that evening, detecting a large animal moving through the protected conservation area. At first Zara assumed it was a wandering hyena or perhaps a leopard. But the blurry image the camera had captured looked… unusual. Too large. And too fast. “Probably just a glitch,” she murmured to herself. Still, curiosity had brought her here. Zara stepped over a fallen branch and pushed aside a curtain of hanging vines. The clearing ahead was bathed in pale moonlight. That was when she smelled it. Blood. The sharp metallic scent hung heavily in the cool night air. Zara’s heart skipped. Her instincts sharpened immediately. Slowly, she moved forward, scanning the tall grass. Then she saw it. At first, she thought it was a shadow lying near the base of a large iroko tree. But the shadow moved. A massive wolf lifted its head. Zara froze. Her breath caught in her throat. She had seen wolves in documentaries and wildlife books before, but never like this. This creature was enormous. Its thick silver-gray fur glimmered faintly under the moonlight, but large patches were darkened with blood. A deep gash ran across its side, staining the grass beneath it. The wolf’s chest rose and fell heavily with each strained breath. It was badly injured. But what unsettled Zara the most were its eyes. They were golden. Bright. And intensely focused on her. Not like the wary gaze of a wild animal. More like the calculating stare of a human being. Zara slowly raised her hands in a calming gesture. “Easy,” she said softly. The wolf’s lips pulled back slightly, revealing long, sharp teeth. A warning. Zara stopped moving immediately. Years of working with wild animals had taught her one important rule: never show fear. Animals sensed it instantly. “I’m not here to hurt you,” she continued gently. The wolf watched her carefully. Its ears twitched, but it didn’t attack. Zara glanced again at the dark blood soaking its fur. If she walked away now, the animal would likely die before morning. Her chest tightened at the thought. She sighed quietly. “You’re lucky I can’t ignore an injured animal.” Carefully, she crouched down and slowly opened the small medical kit in her bag. The wolf let out a low growl as she moved closer. Zara paused again. “It’s okay,” she whispered. “I just want to help.” For a moment, the forest seemed to hold its breath. Then, slowly, she reached out her hand. The wolf’s muscles tensed beneath its fur. Zara hesitated. But something strange happened. The moment her fingers touched the thick fur along its shoulder, the wolf’s body relaxed. The growl faded. Its breathing slowed. Zara blinked in surprise. “That’s strange…” Usually injured predators reacted aggressively to human contact. But this one seemed calmer now. Almost relieved. The wolf’s golden eyes stared directly into hers. And suddenly, something in its expression changed. Shock. Recognition. Zara felt a shiver run down her spine. “Hey…” she murmured nervously. “Why are you looking at me like that?” The wolf’s body suddenly jerked. A deep, painful sound escaped its throat. Then it began to shake violently. Zara jumped back. “What’s wrong with you?” The animal’s body twisted unnaturally. Bones cracked loudly. Fur rippled and shifted across its massive frame. Zara’s heart slammed against her ribs as she watched in horror. The wolf was changing. Its powerful limbs stretched and reshaped. Its body shrank rapidly. Fur disappeared as human skin emerged beneath it. Within seconds, the giant wolf was gone. In its place lay a man. Zara stared. Her mind struggled to process what she had just witnessed. The man lay unconscious on the forest floor, his dark hair falling across his forehead. His chest rose slowly with each breath, and the same deep wound still marked his side. But there was no mistaking it. This was the wolf. Zara staggered backward. “This… this isn’t possible…” Before she could move again, the man suddenly inhaled sharply. His eyes snapped open. Golden. Exactly like the wolf’s. They locked onto hers instantly. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then he moved. Faster than she expected. His hand shot out and grabbed her wrist. Zara gasped in shock. His grip was strong despite the injury. The stranger leaned closer, breathing in slowly as if catching her scent. His eyes widened with disbelief. “Impossible,” he muttered hoarsely. Zara tried to pull her hand away. “What do you mean impossible? You just turned into a human!” But the man didn’t seem to hear her. He kept staring at her like she was the most shocking thing he had ever seen. Then his voice dropped to a whisper. “You smell like salvation.” Zara’s heart pounded. “Salvation from what?” The stranger’s gaze darkened. And the answer he gave sent a chill through her entire body. “From a curse that is about to destroy my entire pack.”
