Chapter 5 : The Wolf Awakens

The hunters rushed into the cabin. The door slammed open so hard it struck the wall with a loud c***k. Cold wind burst inside, carrying the smell of wet earth, smoke, and the thick scent of the forest. Zara’s heart jumped into her throat. Three men stepped inside. Their boots were heavy against the wooden floorboards, their movements sharp and deliberate like men who were used to violence. Each of them carried a gun. For a brief moment, nobody spoke. The only sounds in the cabin were the crackling fire outside and Zara’s uneven breathing. She stood near the window, her fingers gripping the edge of the wooden frame so tightly her knuckles turned pale. Across the room, Kael stood slowly. He had been sitting only seconds earlier, still recovering from his injuries. But now he was upright. Still. Watching the men. Something about the way he stood had changed. When Zara found him earlier in the forest, he had looked wounded and exhausted. Now he looked… dangerous. One of the hunters lifted his gun. “Kill him,” the man said coldly. The command echoed inside the small cabin. Zara’s chest tightened. Her mind struggled to understand what was happening. Who were these men? Why were they hunting him? And most importantly— What exactly had she brought into her home? The hunter stepped forward, narrowing his eyes. “Well, well,” he muttered. “Thought you could hide from us, Alpha?” Zara blinked. Alpha? The word hung in the air strangely. Kael didn’t react the way a normal person would. He didn’t look confused. He didn’t look afraid. Instead, he tilted his head slightly, his golden eyes watching the men with an unsettling calmness. “You shouldn’t have followed me here,” Kael said quietly. His voice was low. Controlled. The hunter laughed. The sound was harsh and humorless. “You’re in no position to give warnings,” he said. His finger rested on the trigger. “You’re injured. Alone. And outnumbered.” He raised the gun higher. “And tonight, your little reign as Alpha ends.” Zara’s pulse pounded in her ears. Alpha. Wolves. The strange glowing eyes. Her mind was trying desperately to connect pieces that didn’t make sense. “Wait!” she blurted. All three hunters glanced at her. Only now did they seem to notice her presence. Their expressions darkened. “Well, that’s unfortunate,” one of them muttered. “Witness.” The word sent a chill down Zara’s spine. She took a step backward. “I—I don’t know what’s happening,” she said quickly. “I just found him injured—” The hunter interrupted her by aiming his gun toward Kael again. “Doesn’t matter.” He pulled the trigger. The gunshot exploded inside the cabin. Zara screamed. But Kael was already moving. One second he was standing still. The next second he vanished from where he stood. The hunter barely had time to react before Kael slammed into him with terrifying force. The man crashed backward into the wooden table. The table shattered instantly. Wood splintered across the floor. The gun flew out of the hunter’s hands. The other two men stepped back sharply. Their confidence disappeared. Something about Kael’s movement had changed the situation completely. This was no longer a hunt. This was a fight. The hunter who had been knocked down groaned as he struggled to stand. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. He glared up at Kael with pure hatred. “Shift,” he growled. Zara frowned. Shift? At first she thought the man meant move. But then the hunter’s body began to twist. A horrible cracking sound echoed through the room. Zara froze. The man dropped to his knees. His back arched violently. His fingers curled inward as if something inside him was breaking and reshaping at the same time. “What… what is happening?” Zara whispered. The hunter let out a guttural scream. Then fur burst through his skin. Dark brown fur spread rapidly across his arms and shoulders. His bones cracked again. His jaw pushed forward unnaturally, teeth sharpening into long, curved fangs. Zara’s stomach dropped. “No… no, that’s impossible…” The man’s body grew larger. His clothes tore apart as his form expanded. Within seconds— The human was gone. A massive wolf stood in his place. Zara stumbled backward, nearly tripping over a chair. Her entire body felt numb. This couldn’t be real. People didn’t turn into wolves. But the creature standing in the middle of her cabin was undeniably real. The second hunter shifted as well. Bones snapping. Skin splitting. Another wolf emerged beside the first. Two enormous wolves now stood facing Kael. Their yellow eyes glowed with hunger. Zara pressed her hand over her mouth to stop herself from screaming again. Her world felt like it had completely shattered. Outside, a deep howl echoed through the forest. Then another. And another. Zara’s blood turned cold. There were more wolves outside. Many more. Kael stood between the wolves and Zara. His golden eyes burned brighter than before. “You really thought three wolves would be enough?” he said quietly. One of the wolves growled. Low. Threatening. The sound vibrated through the cabin walls. But Kael didn’t move. Instead, he stepped forward slowly. The air in the room suddenly felt heavier. Dominant. Powerful. The wolves hesitated. Fear flickered in their eyes. “The Alpha…” one of them muttered weakly. Zara barely understood what that meant. But she could feel the weight of the title. Kael turned his head slightly toward her. “Stay behind me,” he said. His voice was calm. Almost gentle. Then his body began to change. Zara’s breath caught. His shoulders widened first. Muscles rippled beneath his skin. Then came the sound. Crack. Bone snapping. Kael bent forward slightly, as if some invisible force was pulling him apart and rebuilding him. His fingers stretched. Claws pushed through his skin. Golden fur spread across his arms, chest, and back. The transformation was terrifying. And yet Zara couldn’t look away. Within moments, the man she had rescued no longer stood before her. Instead— A massive golden wolf filled the center of the cabin. He was enormous. Far larger than the other wolves. His fur glowed like fire in the flickering light. And his golden eyes held an ancient, commanding power. This was not just a wolf. This was an Alpha. The rogue wolves attacked first. One lunged forward with a vicious snarl. The golden wolf met the attack head-on. They collided with incredible force. The cabin shook. Wood cracked beneath their weight. The wolves rolled across the floor in a blur of fur and teeth. Zara pressed herself against the wall, her heart racing. The golden wolf was faster. Stronger. He twisted his body and slammed the attacking wolf across the room. The creature crashed into the wall with a painful yelp. The second wolf hesitated. Then it attacked. But the Alpha was ready. With terrifying speed, he pinned the wolf to the floor. The fight ended almost instantly. The rogue wolf whimpered beneath him. Defeated. Outside, the forest fell silent. The distant howls stopped. As if the other wolves had already sensed the outcome. The golden Alpha slowly lifted his head. His glowing eyes turned toward Zara. Her heart nearly stopped. Because in that moment she realized something terrifying. The wounded stranger she had dragged out of the forest… The man she had taken into her home… Was not just a wolf. He was the Alpha of them. And somehow— Without realizing it— She had just stepped into a world she could never escape.
