THE BLACK BOOK Willy later wondered how he got up and turned his back on the ghost-filled cemetery, walked the quiet streets, and finally returned home. He opened the door in extreme silence. The house was plunged into darkness. Without turning on the lights, he groped his way into the hall and, holding on to the railing, he climbed the stairs, remembering to jump the creaking last step. He put his ear to his parents" bedroom door; their slow, rhythmic breathing made him breathe a sigh of relief. He went into his room and closed the door. It wasn"t until he threw himself on the bed that he discovered he was shaking like a leaf. His sweat-soaked clothes irritated his skin and his hair stuck to his forehead.
