Chapter 18 — The Night Everything Changed

1681 Words
By six o'clock that Friday evening, my bedroom looked like a small storm had passed through it. Clothes were everywhere. My bed was covered with outfits I'd rejected. One shoe was underneath my desk. The other was somehow beside my closet. I stood in front of my mirror with my arms crossed. "I have nothing to wear." Mom, who was standing at the doorway, looked around my room. "You have enough clothes to dress an entire classroom." "None of them are right." She laughed. "You're going to a school party, Mia. Not accepting an award." "I know." "Then stop overthinking it." I sighed. Maybe she was right. I finally settled on an outfit that made me feel comfortable and confident. Nothing too complicated. Just me. I looked at myself one more time. Mom smiled. "You look lovely." "Thanks." She walked into the room and fixed a small part of my hair. "You've been nervous about tonight." "A little." "Why?" I hesitated. "Because it's my first big event here." She nodded. "Then enjoy it." "What if something goes wrong?" "Something always goes wrong eventually." I looked at her. She smiled. "But that doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy the things that go right." I smiled. "Okay." She kissed the top of my head and left the room. I looked at my phone. Three notifications. Eva. Andrew. Chloe. I opened Chloe's message first. Chloe: PARTY NIGHT. Mia: Please don't shout through my phone. Chloe: ARE YOU READY? Mia: Maybe. Chloe: Mia. Mia: Yes, I'm ready. Chloe: Good. Have fun. Mia: I will. Chloe: And remember what I told you. Mia: About Iris? Chloe: About being yourself. I smiled. Mia: I remember. Chloe: Good. I put my phone down. For the first time all week, I wasn't thinking about what people might say. I was excited. --- Eva arrived a few minutes later. She stood outside the house and immediately called me. "Are you coming?" "I'm coming!" I grabbed my bag and hurried downstairs. Mom looked up from the living room. "Have fun." "I will." "Text me when you get there." "I will." I stepped outside. Eva looked at me. Then she smiled. "Okay." "What?" "You look amazing." "Thank you." She hugged me. "Tonight is going to be fun." "I hope so." "It will be." Andrew was waiting nearby. He looked at us. "Finally." Eva rolled her eyes. "We've been waiting for you." "You could have come inside." Andrew shook his head. "Your mother scares me." I laughed. "She doesn't." "She does." Eva pushed him lightly. "Let's go." We started toward the school. Sophie and Naomi were meeting us there. The closer we got, the louder the music became. The school grounds looked completely different. Lights had been placed around the entrance. There were decorations everywhere. Students filled the courtyard, laughing and talking. Music played from speakers near the main building. For a moment, I simply stood there. "This is actually beautiful," I said. Eva smiled. "I told you." Andrew looked around. "Okay. I admit it." "Admit what?" "This might actually be fun." Eva laughed. --- Inside, the atmosphere was even louder. Students were dancing. Some were taking pictures. Others were sitting around talking. There was food everywhere. Sophie and Naomi found us near the refreshments. "Mia!" Sophie hugged me. "You came!" "Of course." Naomi smiled. "You look great." "Thank you." Andrew immediately grabbed a plate. Everyone laughed. "What?" he asked. "I'm hungry." "You're always hungry." "That's because I'm consistent." We spent the next hour doing exactly what we'd promised ourselves we'd do. We had fun. We took pictures. We laughed at Andrew's terrible jokes. Sophie attempted to teach Naomi a dance. Eva joined them. I stood back laughing. Then Andrew grabbed my hand. "No." "Yes." "Andrew." "You're dancing." "I don't dance." "Tonight you do." He pulled me into the group. I laughed so hard that I eventually stopped caring whether I looked silly. For once, I wasn't thinking about Westbrook's opinions. I wasn't thinking about Iris. I wasn't thinking about rumors. I was just having fun with my friends. --- Across the room, Iris watched. She had arrived with her usual group. She looked perfectly comfortable. Until she saw Trent. He was talking to one of his teammates. Then his eyes moved across the room. They landed on Mia. He smiled. Iris noticed. Her expression changed. One of her friends leaned toward her. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine." "You don't look fine." "I'm fine." Her friend didn't argue. --- Later, I stepped outside for some fresh air. The music was quieter outside. I leaned against the railing and looked at the lights around the school grounds. "Mia." I turned. Trent. "Hey." "Hey." He stood a comfortable distance away. "Having fun?" "Yeah." "Good." He smiled. "I was worried you might hate it." "Why?" "You seemed nervous about coming." "I was." "And now?" I looked back toward the party. "Now I'm glad I came." He smiled. "Me too." There was a quiet moment. Then he said, "You seem different tonight." "Different how?" "Relaxed." I smiled. "I think my friends finally convinced me that I don't have to care what everyone thinks." "That's good." "Yeah." He looked toward the building. "Can I tell you something?" "Sure." "I like talking to you." I didn't know what to say. He continued. "You don't treat me differently because people know me." "Why would I?" "Some people do." "I don't care that you're the basketball player." He laughed. "Good." I smiled. "I just think you're Trent." He nodded. "I like that." Before the conversation could continue, Eva appeared at the doorway. "There you are!" I turned. "What's up?" "We're taking pictures." "Coming." I looked at Trent. "See you inside." "Yeah." --- The next hour passed quickly. Pictures. Music. Food. Laughter. At one point, Andrew convinced everyone to take a group photo. We squeezed together. The camera flashed. "Perfect," Sophie said. Andrew looked at the picture. "I'm handsome." Naomi laughed. "You're unbelievable." I looked at the photo. For a moment, I realized how much things had changed. A few weeks ago, I had walked into Westbrook completely alone. Now I had people standing beside me. People who cared whether I was okay. People who made me laugh. People I trusted. I smiled. Maybe this was what starting over was supposed to feel like. --- But not everyone was enjoying the night. Iris approached Trent later in the evening. "Can we talk?" He looked at her. "Okay." They stepped away from the crowd. I didn't hear their conversation. I wasn't trying to. But I noticed the tension. Iris looked angry. Trent looked frustrated. Eventually, he walked away. Iris remained where she was. Then her eyes moved toward me. I immediately looked away. Eva noticed. "What happened?" "I don't know." "Are you okay?" "Yeah." She looked at me. "Are you sure?" I nodded. "Yes." --- Near the end of the party, the music became slower and quieter. Students began gathering their things. Some were already leaving. I found myself standing near Trent again. "You ready to go?" "Almost." He nodded. "Tonight was fun." "It was." He smiled. "I'm glad you came." "So am I." We stood quietly for a moment. Then he said something that caught me off guard. "I'm really glad I asked you to come with me." I smiled. "Me too." There was a brief pause. Then, in a simple moment that neither of us seemed to expect, Trent leaned closer. The moment passed quickly. I stepped back afterward, surprised by what had just happened. Neither of us immediately spoke. Trent looked at me. "I'm sorry if that was too sudden." I shook my head. "It's okay." My thoughts were all over the place. I didn't know what the moment meant. I didn't know what would happen next. And I definitely didn't know that someone had been watching. Iris. She stood several feet away. Her phone was in her hand. She had seen everything. And she had recorded it. --- By the time I got home, I was exhausted. I changed into my pajamas and sat on my bed. My phone buzzed. Eva. Eva: You home? Mia: Yes. Eva: Tonight was actually amazing. Mia: It was. Eva: Are you okay? I stared at the message. Mia: Yeah. Eva: Good. Mia: Goodnight. Eva: Goodnight. I smiled. Then another notification appeared. This time, it was from the school group chat. I opened it. There were dozens of messages. At first, I didn't understand. Then I saw the video. My stomach dropped. I watched the first few seconds. It was me. And Trent. At the party. My face went hot. I immediately closed the video. Another message appeared. Then another. Then another. The video was already being shared. Someone had added a caption. Someone else had sent it to another group. My phone wouldn't stop vibrating. I stared at the screen. "No." Another notification. Then another. My hands started shaking. I opened the school group chat again. The number of messages had doubled. People were talking about me. About Trent. About the party. About what they'd seen. I couldn't process it. I immediately called Eva. She answered almost instantly. "Mia?" "Did you see it?" There was silence. Then— "Yes." My voice became quieter. "It's everywhere." "I know." "What do I do?" "I don't know yet." My phone buzzed again while we were still talking. Another message. Another share. Another notification. The video was spreading faster than I could understand. I looked at the screen. For the first time that night, the happiness I'd felt at the party disappeared. I realized something terrifying. Tomorrow morning, everyone at Westbrook would have seen it. And there was nothing I could do to take it back. The night that was supposed to be one of my happiest memories had just become the beginning of something I wasn't prepared for. I placed my phone face down on the bed. It buzzed again. And again. And again. I didn't pick it up. I already knew what it was. The video had spread. And by morning, the entire school would know.
