Chapter 14 — The Breaking Point

1459 Words
The hallway felt different after lunch. Maybe it was because I was paying more attention. Or maybe the whispers really had gotten louder. I walked beside Ava, Andrew, Sophie, and Naomi, trying to focus on anything other than the people watching us. I could hear pieces of conversations as we passed. "That's her." "That's the girl from the post." "I heard she..." I stopped listening. I had learned something about rumors. They grew every time someone repeated them. By the time the truth reached the other side of the school, it barely looked like the truth anymore. I tightened my grip on my bag. Ava noticed. "Don't let them get to you." "I'm trying." Andrew walked on my other side. "Want me to start telling everybody I'm your lawyer?" I laughed despite myself. "Please don't." "Too late. I've already prepared my speech." Sophie smiled. "What would your speech even say?" Andrew cleared his throat dramatically. "Hello, Westbrook High. My client is innocent of all charges." Naomi laughed. "What charges?" "Being too fabulous." I rolled my eyes. "You are ridiculous." "Thank you." For a few seconds, the tension disappeared. Then we reached our classroom. Our teacher was already inside. "Everyone, take your seats." We settled down. I pulled out my notebook. The teacher began explaining the lesson, but my attention kept drifting toward my phone. I knew I shouldn't check it. I checked it anyway. Nothing new. I put it away. Focus. I had another test coming up. And after everything that had happened, I needed something in my life that still made sense. Schoolwork did. Numbers had answers. Maps had locations. Facts were facts. Rumors couldn't change them. I opened my notebook and started writing. For the rest of the lesson, I barely looked up. When the bell rang, I packed my things. As I stepped into the hallway, my phone vibrated. Chloe. I smiled before opening the message. Chloe: How are you holding up? Mia: I'm okay. Chloe: That's not what I asked. I smiled. Mia: I'm trying. Chloe: Better answer. Mia: People are still talking. Chloe: Let them talk. Mia: Easy for you to say from another state. There was a short pause. Then: Chloe: You're right. Chloe: But I know you. Chloe: And I know you're stronger than one stupid rumor. I stared at the message. Mia: Thank you. Chloe: Also, how's the test preparation? I sighed. Mia: Don't remind me. Chloe: Geography? Mia: Unfortunately. Chloe: Your favorite subject. Mia: Exactly. Which means I actually have expectations to live up to. Chloe: You'll do great. Mia: I hope so. I locked my phone. Ava looked at me. "Chloe?" "Yeah." "What did she say?" "That I'm going to do well on my test." Andrew nodded. "She's right." "I know." We continued down the hallway. Then I saw Iris. She was standing with her usual group near the lockers. She looked directly at me. Our eyes met. For a moment, neither of us moved. Then she smiled. It wasn't a friendly smile. It was the kind that made me feel like she knew something I didn't. Ava noticed. "Keep walking." I did. But as I passed, I heard Iris say something to one of her friends. I couldn't make out the words. I didn't turn around. I wasn't going to give her the satisfaction. --- The rest of the school day passed without anything major happening. At least, that's what I thought. When the final bell rang, everyone rushed toward the exits. I packed my bag. Andrew was waiting outside the classroom. "Ready?" "Yeah." Ava joined us. "Let's go." We walked toward the entrance together. Outside, the afternoon sun was bright, and the school courtyard was crowded. Students were laughing, talking, and making plans for the evening. For a moment, Westbrook looked completely normal. Then a voice called my name. "Mia!" I turned. Trent was walking toward us. Ava immediately looked at me. Andrew's expression changed. Trent stopped in front of me. "Can we talk?" I hesitated. "About what?" "The post." My stomach tightened. "I already told you I didn't make it." "I know." He glanced around. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry." "For what?" "For the whole situation." I looked at him. "You didn't make the post." "No." "But you're part of the reason Iris is angry with me." He looked uncomfortable. "I didn't mean for that to happen." "Maybe not." I took a breath. "But I don't want to be involved in whatever is happening between you and Iris." He nodded. "I understand." There was an awkward silence. Then he said, "You handled yourself well." I raised an eyebrow. "Did I?" "Yeah." "Because I don't feel like I did." He smiled slightly. "Trust me. Most people would have lost it." I looked away. "Thanks." He nodded. "I'll see you tomorrow." I watched him walk away. Ava immediately came beside me. "You okay?" "Yeah." Andrew looked at me. "You sure?" "Yeah." I forced a smile. "Let's go home." --- Andrew drove us home. The car was quieter than usual. Ava occasionally glanced back at me. I knew she was worried. I just didn't know how to explain what I was feeling. I wasn't angry anymore. I was tired. Tired of explaining myself. Tired of wondering what people thought. Tired of walking into school and wondering what new rumor had appeared overnight. When Andrew finally stopped outside my house, I reached for the door. "Thanks." "Anytime." Ava smiled. "Text us later." "I will." I walked inside. Mom wasn't home yet. I dropped my bag upstairs and changed into something comfortable. Then I returned to my desk. My geography book was still sitting where I'd left it. I opened it. For the next hour, I studied. No phone. No social media. No rumors. Just me and my notes. It felt peaceful. Until my phone started vibrating. Once. Twice. Then continuously. I frowned. I reached for it. The group chat was exploding. Ava: Guys? Sophie: What's happening? Naomi: Wait... Andrew: Everyone check your phones. My heart dropped. I opened the school social media page. There was a new post. My stomach twisted. The post wasn't about me this time. It was about Iris. Someone had uploaded a short video from earlier in the day. It showed Iris talking with some of her friends. The audio wasn't completely clear, but enough of the conversation could be heard to make people start speculating. Within minutes, the comments were multiplying. I stared at the screen. Mia: What's going on? Ava: I don't know. Andrew: Someone recorded them. Sophie: This is getting out of control. Naomi: Seriously. I put my phone down. I didn't want to be part of it. For once, I wanted to stay completely out of the drama. Then another notification appeared. Chloe. Chloe: Mia, please don't get involved. Mia: I'm not. Chloe: Good. Mia: I'm studying. Chloe: Proud of you. I smiled. Mia: Geography is calling. Chloe: Go be the genius you are. I laughed. I placed my phone facedown and returned to my notes. But somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew something had changed. The rumors were no longer moving in only one direction. And when people were embarrassed, they often looked for someone else to blame. --- The next morning suddenly felt much closer than I wanted. I checked the time. 8:45 p.m. I had been studying for almost three hours. My mother finally came home. "You're still studying?" "Geography." She smiled. "That's my girl." "I have to do well." "You will." She placed a plate of food beside me. "Take a break." I looked at the food. "I forgot I was hungry." "Exactly." I laughed. "Thanks, Mom." She sat beside me for a moment. "How are things at school?" I hesitated. "Better." She looked at me carefully. "Are you sure?" I nodded. "I'm handling it." She smiled. "I know you are." After she left, I ate and returned to my notes. My phone buzzed again. This time, it was the group chat. Ava: Goodnight everyone. Sophie: Goodnight. Naomi: Goodnight. Andrew: Don't forget tomorrow. Mia: Forget what? Andrew: You'll see. Ava: Andrew! Andrew: What? I laughed. Mia: You people are suspicious. Andrew: Sleep. I shook my head. I put my phone down. Then I looked at the geography notes in front of me. Tomorrow was another school day. Another day of rumors. Another day of Westbrook. But I was ready. Or at least, I thought I was. I closed my notebook. I had no idea that the next day would change everything. Not because of a test. Not because of a rumor. But because someone at Westbrook had decided that my story wasn't finished yet. And they were about to make their next move.
