The next day I woke up more refreshed than ever. I felt like I had slept on a cloud all night, sleeping deeper than I ever have. I needed that for today, a day any teenager would hate just as much as I did. Starting a new school, in the middle of my senior year. I knew no one and didn’t know how I would get along with the others. Especially considering that everyone was a werewolf and I didn’t even know I was one until yesterday. So, I am honestly not too hopeful for today, if anything I am expecting trouble. Wolves were notoriously territorial and I am a new wolf on their land. Damn that sounded weird even in my head.
I kept this in mind as I dressed for the day. I dressed comfortably, skinny jeans, a nice black crop top and combat boots. I twisted my black hair into a messy bun and put eyeliner and mascara on to help accent my green eyes. I didn’t want to impress anyone, not really. What people thought of me really didn’t matter, but I did want to make a good first impression. This was to be my home for the foreseeable future and I didn’t want to make it anymore uncomfortable than it already was. I wanted to be able to come to terms with this on my own, be able to grow comfortable with it before my birthday and first shift. If that was possible.
“Honey are you ready?” My mother asked, lightly tapped on the door before peaking her head in. I had to remember to lock my door, I forgot we no longer had a home to ourselves and were sharing with a gang of wolves.
“Yeah, as ready as I can be. Is breakfast done?”
“Prepared and waiting.” My mom smiled as she turned and walked away.
“Hey, wait a minute.” I yelled out at her as I grabbed my bag, slung it over my shoulder and ran out of the room slamming the door behind me.
“What is it?” She asked smiling, a knowing look in her eyes.
“You know I don’t know my way around this place yet.”
My mom laughed as we walked back down the stairs together and through the massive house. I couldn’t believe we were staying here. It was like living in one of the most expensive hotels for free. It was both thrilling and terrifying. Thrilling because of the obvious perks that came with it. Terrifying because we now lived with a bunch of people I don’t know. What makes it worse it my habit of not locking my bedroom door. I never had to just living with my parents. But now that we are living with others locking it would make me feel a lot more comfortable.
I didn’t talk as we made our way through the house but I did get a few curious glances that were averted as soon as my eyes met theirs. I mentally shook my head not sure if I liked this whole submission thing. It was different and weird. I wasn’t used to people looking away from me just because I looked back at them. According to Elijah though I would have to get used to it. I was a rare blood born alpha female, a pure blood. Whatever that meant.
“Mom, what’s a pure blood?”
“A pure blood is a wolf that descends from a pure werewolf bloodline. Wolves mate with humans and even other supernaturals. But a pure blood comes from a strictly werewolf bloodline. No humans and no other supernaturals being in our bloodline, only wolves.”
“What’s a mate? And what other supernaturals?”
Mom laughed. “A mate to a wolf is equivalent to a humans soul mate. Our mates are given to us by the goddess, a person predestined for us, our perfect match in every way. And yes, many other supernaturals exist.”
“Well, that’s nice. To not have to worry about choosing the perfect guy. One is already given to you. Perfectly matched for you.”
“Yes, it is. The goddess gave me your father.”
I smiled; happy my parents were given each other. I couldn’t imagine anyone other than them being my parents. Then again, I wouldn’t know any different no matter what, but still. I wonder who this goddess has planned for me. Would he be a good man? Happy? Would he be protective and possessive? Would he like me? Accept me? It sounded as if wolves didn’t reject their mates, that they always ended up together. Would that be the same for me? I didn’t know anything about wolves or how they lived. I didn’t know pack hierarchy. I didn’t know anything about wolves or packs or anything else including this goddess my mother spoke of. That might just be a deal breaker for whomever the goddess intended for me. But then again, I could be wrong. Again, I didn’t know how all of this worked.
I stopped in my tracks the second I reached the dining room. A table that fit at least twenty people was sprawled out before me packed full of food. Bacon, eggs, ham, steak, biscuits. Gravy, sausage, grits. But that’s not all. People, so many people sat around the table.
“Ah, there she is.” My father stood and greeted me kissing my cheeks before I sat down beside him.
“Seraphina I would like for you to meet my mate and Luna Elanor and my beta Sam. Everyone else is of higher rank and their families. There is no time before school to introduce you to everyone, but you’ll get to know one another soon. My son is not joining us this morning but you will meet him at school today.”
I nodded, piling my plate full of food. I was so damn hungry. Lately it was like I couldn’t get enough food in me to last. I would eat all of this and be hungry again in a few hours. I figured out a year ago to keep protein bars and such in my bag from now on.
“Hungry, are we?” Elanor asked on a chuckle.
“Always.” I groaned, biting into a piece of bacon.
“You’re a growing she-wolf you’re going to feel hungry, starved even.” She told me kindly. I smiled up at her, her beautiful amber eyes were soft and kind. Her skin was flawless and her smile lit up her face. She had beautiful long chestnut colored hair. Even from here I could see the muscle she had built up on her. She was beautiful.
“Yeah, well I guess I have that part down. I’ve been starving lately, I can never get enough food, I have to keep protein bars on me at all times. Anyway, how am I getting to school? I don’t have a car and I have no idea where it is anyway.”
“You actually do have a car.” Elijah said surprising me. “Your parents and I went and got you one last night. It’s right outside.”
“Wait, seriously?” I beamed, looking between my parents and Elijah.
“Yes seriously.” My dad laughed tossing something through the air at me. Reflex kicked in and I snatched the object out of the air. I looked in my hand to see a set of keys, and not any keys but keys to a Camaro. A freaking Camaro. I jumped from my seat and flew out of the front door to come face to face with a sleek black brand-new Camaro.
“This is mine? Seriously?” I asked bounding in place.
“Yeah. Now get to school. Go straight down this road until you get to a four way, turn left and drive for about five minutes. The school will be on your right you can’t miss it.” Elijah told me lightly. To my surprise he pulled me into a hug. Okay this was weird, I thought as I returned his hug awkwardly. “Have a good day.” he told me as he pulled away.
I smiled at him then my parents before getting in the car and driving the direction I was told to go. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. I was. I was very, very nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. A school of werewolves, a new girl. I don’t think things could go very well. Deep down though I had a nagging feeling today wasn’t going to go as well as I hoped it would. I always listened to my instincts; they were never wrong. Why would they be this time? Might was well just go with it and do the best I could.
Pulling into the school I took several deep breaths before I could get out of the car. I could feel the tension in the air around me as if it were a physical being. It wasn’t just my feelings, no. This was an overall sense of tension. My muscles coiled beneath my skin as I approached the school’s double doors. Something was wrong, this couldn’t be the way this place felt every day. If it was, I don’t think I could handle it.
Opening the door, I instantly knew something was wrong. A group of people were standing in the middle of the hall circled around something or someone. Shouts could be heard from the center of the circle. Someone was crying while someone else was shouting derogatory and degrading things at them. Everyone else just stood by and watched a mixture of laughing, whispering and tormented expressions. Anger surged inside me. I dropped my bag by the front door and quickly made my way over to the group. People must have felt my presence because they started to turn around and look at me. But one look from me and they bowed their head and stepped out of the way. When I got to the center of the crowd, I saw a cowering Hope while a girl with curly blonde hair stood over her. The girl had a hard sneer in place as she degraded Hope with some of the worst words possible. Harsh and hurtful words. Three guys stood around her each of them with their arms crossed across their chests and smirks on their faces as they watched. Pathetic. When blondie reared back to hit Hope, I lost it.
I surged forward and grabbed the girl by her wrist and tossed her to the side. The girl spun on her heels falling onto her butt a few feet away. Gasps were heard around me, and I saw from the corner of my eye as all three guys took a step towards me. I grabbed Hope’s hand hauling her to her feet and placing her behind me. All in the same motion I turned and faced the incoming threat with a harsh growl. One at a time I eyed the men before me. Two of the three backed away casting their eyes downwards. The third looked at me head on, his amber eyes burning into mine like a living flame. He was mad, but I really didn’t care.
Blondie from earlier came and stood by his side anger wafting off of her. I stared down at her with nothing held back. The girl whimpered and backed up to where she was hidden by the guy who stood in front of me. The only explanation for his lack of cowing was that he was Elijah’s son, which made things so much worse.
"Who are you?" He asked, his tone authoritative, commanding.
“I am none of your concern little alpha.” I hissed, before turning to Hope. I dimmed down whatever alpha crap I had so I could look at her. “Are you alright?” Hope nodded, her beautiful grey eyes shinning with tears. She didn’t speak but she nodded, her hand fisted into my shirt to keep her grounded. I looked her over and saw a bruise starting to form on her upper arm, her lip was swelling and if the way she was holding her abdomen was any indication they had kicked her while she was on the ground. “Lift your shirt.” I demanded. Her eyes met mine, fear clear within their depths. “You’re not in trouble, I want to see the damage.” Hope nodded. With trembling hands, she lifted the hem of her shirt to reveal her stomach which was turning into one large bruise.
I growled as I turned back to the pathetic group of people before me. The guys were now beside the alpha’s son but the girl was still hiding behind him, but I could feel her ire. I was pissed and not just because of the situation but because my first day, within the first five minutes I was breaking up a fight. And a useless and meaningless one at that. What did they gain from attacking someone weaker than them?
“What kind of alpha do you intend to be?” I finally asked, not able to stand this quiet stare down anymore.
“You can’t speak to him like that.” The blonde stepped out from behind him. I kept this alpha crap down for Hope, I didn’t want to scare her more than she already was. But this girl was weak acting strong.
“I can speak to whomever I want however I want.” I growled at her, letting my alpha whatever fill me again. Her eyes bulged before she looked at her feet.
“She’s right. You can’t speak to me that way, I am the alpha.” Little alpha spoke, his tone harsh.
“No. you’re AN alpha, not THE alpha. That would be your father, Elijah. The alpha in which I just left from having breakfast with. The alpha in which I now live with, with my parents. You’re not him and you do not have his position yet. And if this is how you act now, I can’t imagine how horrid of an alpha you will be.”
“Really?” He smirked. “And what do you know of being an alpha?”
“To be honest, not much. I just recently found out I was a werewolf. I just recently found out I was something called a pure blood alpha female. But if what I was told and what I’ve seen is true then an alpha is a leader. A leader is supposed to care for his people, protect his people. A leader is not supposed to pick on those weaker and smaller than him. The weaker of the pack are supposed to be the most protected. Along with the children. Who cares if she is an omega? She is still a person; she has emotions just as you and I do. She bleeds red just as you and I do. And what’s worse you stand back and watch as another of your pack berates and degrades another member. A female at that.” I shook my head sadly. “You’re not an alpha, you’re pathetic just like the toxic people you surround yourself with.”
I grabbed Hope’s hand and dragged her back to the door, grabbed my bag and left. There was no way I could go to class. Hope needed medical attention and it was obvious no one there was going to see that she gets it. “Get in.” I said throwing my bag in the back and sliding into the driver’s seat. Hope got in beside me but stayed quiet, tears rolled down her cheeks as she wept silently.
“Is that normal?” I asked softly.
“Yes, they don’t like me very much.” She whispered.
“But why?”
“I am an orphan. No one knows where I came from. Alpha Elijah found me in the forest and took me in.”
“What does that have to do with anything?” I asked confused.
“I don’t know.” She cried. “I never did anything to them. I always kept to myself, kept my head down. But it was never enough for them. They always wanted to see me hurt, see me crying.” Hope sniffled breaking my heart.
“I am sorry you’ve been put through this. Does alpha Elijah know?”
“No. I never could bring myself to tell him. I mean it is Blaze. Alpha Elijah’s son and the future alpha. What good would it do? All I would be doing was succeeding making my life more difficult when Blaze takes over.”
“Stupid, pathetic, future alpha. I can’t believe he came from Elijah.”
The rest of the ride was silent. When we got back to the house I called for my mom. She wasn’t the only one to come out though. My dad, Elanor and Elijah came with her. “Seraphina why aren’t you at school?”
“Well just as I walked in the door, I was met with a group of people ganging up on Hope here. I got the others off her, confronted the bullies and brought her here. I’m pretty sure she has at least broken ribs. With what I saw she may have internal bleeding, and well you can see the rest” I motioned towards Hope’s beaten body.
“Hope, who did this to you?” Elijah asked as he stepped forward and examined her.
“Elijah, may I speak with you about that?” I asked. “Hope needs to get medical care.”
“Of course, Seraphina. You’re right. Hope go on with Elanor to the pack doctor while I speak with your new friend here.”
