Chapter 10 — The Question He Couldn't Answer

669 Words
I didn't sleep that night. The words on the screen kept repeating inside my head. Some secrets are worth keeping. I stared at the photograph of Adrian and Mira. They were sitting across from each other. Smiling. Looking comfortable. Like two people who had no reason to hide. But they had hidden it from me. For how long? I didn't know. And that uncertainty was slowly destroying me. By morning, I had made a decision. I was going to ask Adrian. Not about the photograph. Not about the hotel. Not even about Mira. I was going to give him one chance to tell me the truth. --- Adrian arrived at my apartment around noon. He smiled when I opened the door. "Hey, love." I stepped aside. "Come in." He immediately noticed something was wrong. "Are you okay?" "Sit down." His smile disappeared. "Lia?" "Please." He sat on the couch. I remained standing. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then I asked quietly, "Do you remember the Grand Meridian Hotel?" His expression changed. Only slightly. But I saw it. "Why?" "Just answer me." He looked away. "I've been there for business." "Three months ago?" "Maybe." I nodded. "With Mira?" Silence. There it was. That silence again. The same silence that had followed every question I had asked. My heart sank. "You were there." "I don't know what you're talking about." I laughed bitterly. "You just said you've been there." "For work, Lia." "Then why did you lie to me?" He looked at me. "I didn't lie." "You told me you were at the office." His jaw tightened. "I was dealing with something." "At a hotel?" He didn't answer. I felt tears building in my eyes. "Was Mira there?" "Lia—" "Was she?" He stood up. "Why are you suddenly doing this?" "Because I'm tired!" My voice broke. "I'm tired of feeling like I'm crazy for noticing things." He stared at me. I wiped my tears. "Every time I ask you something, you give me half an answer." "Because there is nothing to explain." "Then explain the picture." His face went pale. I knew immediately. He knew exactly what picture I meant. "You've seen it?" I stared at him. "Thank you." He frowned. "For what?" "For finally admitting you know what I'm talking about." He ran a hand through his hair. "Lia, please listen to me." "I'm listening." "It wasn't what you think." I felt my chest tighten. "Then what was it?" He opened his mouth. Nothing came out. I waited. Five seconds. Ten. Twenty. Still nothing. My eyes filled with tears. "You can't even answer me." "It's complicated." I laughed through my tears. "Complicated?" "Yes." "What's complicated about telling your fiancée why you're meeting her best friend behind her back?" He looked at me. And for the first time, I saw something in his eyes that I had never seen before. Fear. Not anger. Not confusion. Fear. That was when I knew. There was something. Something real. Something he didn't want me to know. I took a step back. "Adrian..." He moved toward me. "Lia, I swear—" "Don't." He stopped. I looked at the man I had planned to marry. "Just tell me one thing." He said nothing. "Have you ever loved Mira?" His face changed. I didn't need an answer. The silence was enough. My heart broke. But I forced myself to stay standing. I nodded slowly. "Okay." "Lia—" "I understand." "No, you don't." "Maybe I don't." I looked at him through my tears. "But I'm starting to." He reached for my hand. I pulled away. "Please leave." "Lia, let me explain." "Not today." I opened the door. He stood there for a moment. Then he walked out. I closed the door behind him. The moment I was alone, my knees gave out. I sat on the floor and finally let myself cry. Because sometimes the truth doesn't need to be spoken. Sometimes... the person who refuses to answer has already answered everything.
