Chapter 7 — The Secret I Found

542 Words
I spent the entire morning thinking about one thing. The photograph. If Adrian and Mira had nothing to hide, why were they both acting like they did? There was only one way to find out. I started with Adrian's schedule. I opened the shared calendar we used for our wedding preparations. My eyes moved from one date to another. Then I stopped. Three months ago. There it was. A meeting marked as "Business Dinner." The same date as the photograph. I clicked on it. Location: The Grand Meridian Hotel. My stomach tightened. I remembered that night. Adrian had told me he was working late at the office. He had even cancelled our dinner. I stared at the screen. "Why would you lie about that?" I immediately opened my messages with him. I searched for that date. There it was. Sorry, love. I'm still at the office. Don't wait for me. I read it again. Then again. My hands became cold. The Grand Meridian wasn't an office. It was a hotel. I leaned back in my chair. For several minutes, I didn't move. Then I searched through my old messages with Mira. I typed the hotel's name. Nothing. I searched for the date. Nothing. But then I remembered something. Mira had posted a picture that night. I opened her old social media posts. There. A photo of a glass of wine beside a window overlooking the city. The caption said: Sometimes, unexpected evenings become unforgettable. My heart dropped. I opened the photo details. The location had been tagged. The Grand Meridian Hotel. I covered my mouth. "No..." The pieces were beginning to fit together. But I still didn't know why. Maybe Mira had been there with someone else. Maybe Adrian had been there for business. Maybe there was an explanation. I wanted one. Desperately. Then I noticed something in the background of Mira's photo. A man's hand. A watch. I knew that watch. Adrian had given it to himself on his twenty-seventh birthday. I stared at the screen. My eyes began to sting. "Please don't let this be true." I zoomed in. There was no doubt. It was Adrian. I closed the laptop. I couldn't breathe properly. For years, I had believed that trust meant never questioning the person you loved. But maybe trust wasn't supposed to mean ignoring the signs. Maybe I had been protecting them from the truth because I was afraid of what the truth would do to me. My phone suddenly rang. Adrian. I stared at his name. I didn't answer. A few seconds later, another call came. I still didn't answer. Then a message appeared. Are you okay? Why aren't you answering? I stared at it. My fingers hovered over the keyboard. I could have asked him. I could have confronted him. Instead, I typed: I'm fine. Just tired. I sent it. Then I put my phone down. For the first time, I lied to Adrian. And strangely... I didn't feel guilty. Because now I understood something. If Adrian and Mira were hiding the truth from me... Then I didn't owe them my trust anymore. I just needed to know how deep their secret went. And I was willing to find out. No matter how much it hurt.
