THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Chapter 2 — The Night Everything Changed The sound of rain against the windows was the only thing breaking the silence in the house. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her phone. 8:47 p.m. She had been waiting for her father to come home for almost two hours. Not because she missed him. Because she knew what would happen when he walked through that door. Questions. Where had she been? Who had she spoken to? Why had she taken so long? Her entire life felt like a list of rules written by someone else. She sighed and tossed her phone onto the bed. A soft knock came at the door. “Come in.” Her nanny stepped inside, carrying a tray of food. “You haven't eaten.” “I’m not hungry.” “You said that at lunch.” She smiled faintly. “Maybe I'm just not hungry today.” The older woman placed the tray on the table and looked at her carefully. “You're worried about your father.” She didn't answer. That was answer enough. “He called earlier,” the nanny continued. “He said he will be home soon.” “Of course he did.” There was bitterness in her voice. The nanny sighed. “Whatever you're planning, please don't make tonight worse.” She looked up. “What am I planning?” The nanny gave her a knowing look. “Nothing.” She smiled. “Exactly.” The moment the nanny left, she reached underneath her pillow and pulled out a small black handbag. Inside were a few clothes, some cash, her charger and her passport. She had been planning to leave for only one night. Just one. She needed to breathe. She needed to feel like a normal girl for once. She slipped the bag over her shoulder and quietly opened the balcony door. The rain had stopped. The garden below was dark. She looked back at her room. For a moment, guilt washed over her. Then she remembered all the times she had asked her father for permission to do something as simple as going out with friends. Always no. Always another excuse. Always another security guard following her. She climbed down carefully and landed on the grass. For the first time that day, she smiled. Freedom. Even if it was only for a few hours. She hurried through the garden and slipped through the small side gate. Nobody stopped her. Nobody called her name. Nobody told her where she could or couldn't go. She laughed softly as she walked down the quiet street. Her phone buzzed. Dad. Her smile disappeared. She stared at the screen. She didn't answer. A second call came. Then another. She switched the phone to silent. “I'll deal with him tomorrow,” she whispered. She had no idea how badly she would regret those words. Across the street, a black SUV sat beneath the shadows of a large tree. The engine was running. Inside, a man watched her through the windshield. “She’s alone,” the driver said. The man in the back seat didn't respond immediately. His eyes followed her as she walked farther away from the house. “Are you sure?” “Positive.” He looked down at the photograph in his hand. Her face. Her name. Her family. Everything about her. His jaw tightened. “Wait.” The driver glanced at him. “Wait for what?” “She'll turn at the corner.” “And then?” The man's eyes hardened. “Then we take her.” She continued walking, completely unaware that someone was following her. She reached the corner and stopped to check her phone. Twenty missed calls. She frowned. “Seriously?” She was about to call her nanny when a car slowed beside her. She stepped away. The passenger window rolled down. “Excuse me.” She looked inside. A stranger. “Can you help me find an address?” She shook her head. “Sorry, I don't know this area well.” She turned to leave. Then everything happened at once. A hand grabbed her from behind. She screamed. Her phone fell to the ground. She struggled violently, kicking and scratching whoever had grabbed her. “Let me go!” Another pair of hands caught her arms. “Stop!” “Help!” Her scream echoed through the empty street. She tried to bite the hand covering her mouth. The man cursed. “Hold her!” Her heart pounded. She could barely breathe. Then she saw him. He stood beside the SUV, watching her. Tall. Silent. Cold. Their eyes met for one brief second. Something in his expression made her stop fighting. Not because she trusted him. Because she realized something terrifying. He wasn't surprised. He had been expecting her. She shook her head. “No…” The man walked toward her. “Get her inside.” She kicked again. “No! Please!” He stopped in front of her. For the first time, his expression changed. There was something almost conflicted in his eyes. But it disappeared quickly. “You shouldn't have left your house tonight.” Her eyes widened. “How do you know where I live?” He didn't answer. Instead, he turned away. “Take her.” The door of the SUV opened. She was pushed inside. She grabbed the doorframe desperately. “Please!” The man looked at her again. “You'll be safe.” She stared at him in disbelief. “Safe?” Her voice cracked. “You're k********g me!” He said nothing. The door slammed shut. The SUV pulled away. She pressed herself against the window, tears filling her eyes as her home disappeared into the distance. Her father. Her nanny. Her room. Her entire life. Everything was suddenly behind her. She reached for her phone. It was gone. Her hands began to shake. “Where are you taking me?” No answer. She looked toward the man sitting across from her. He was watching her. “Who are you?” Silence. “Why did you take me?” Still nothing. Her fear slowly turned into anger. “Answer me!” The man finally looked directly into her eyes. “You'll get your answers.” “When?” “When the time is right.” She swallowed hard. “And if I don't cooperate?” His expression darkened. “Then you'll make this harder for yourself.” She stared at him. For the first time in her life, money couldn't protect her. Her father's name couldn't protect her. The gates around her mansion couldn't protect her. She was completely alone. But what she didn't know was that the man sitting across from her wasn't the only person who had been watching her. And her k********g wasn't random. Someone had planned it. Someone had paid for it. And someone wanted her family to suffer. The SUV disappeared into the darkness. Behind them, her phone lay shattered on the roadside. And on its screen was one unanswered call. Dad.
