The first Lie

Chapter Three — The First Lie Damian Blackwood didn’t believe in accidents. And after Aria Bennett walked out of his boardroom, he stopped believing in silence too. Because silence… was what people used right before they hid something. --- Blackwood Tower — Executive Floor Aria stood at her assigned workstation inside the assistant operations suite of Blackwood Global, fingers resting lightly on the edge of her tablet. Around her, the office moved with disciplined chaos—executives issuing commands, analysts decoding markets, assistants running between glass partitions like trained reflexes rather than people. But Aria wasn’t listening to any of it. She was thinking about him. Damian Blackwood. The way the room bent around him without permission. The way silence obeyed him. And worse— The way he had looked at her like she was not just noticed… but measured. “Aria.” She turned. Elena Rossi stood behind her, arms crossed, expression unreadable. “You’re not supposed to space out in this department,” Elena said. “I wasn’t spacing out.” “You were thinking.” Aria hesitated. “That’s worse,” Elena added. A faint pause. Then softer— “Come with me. Mr. Blackwood wants a post-meeting report summary.” Aria’s chest tightened slightly. “Now?” Elena nodded. “When he says now… it means five minutes ago.” --- The Lie Begins Damian’s office on the top floor of Blackwood Tower was colder than the rest of the building. Not temperature-wise. Emotionally. Everything inside it was controlled—down to the placement of pens, the angle of screens, the alignment of books that looked more like trophies than reading material. Aria stepped inside carefully. Damian stood by the window, back turned. “You asked for me?” she said. “Yes.” One word. Flat. Controlled. He turned slowly. His gaze landed on her immediately. “Sit.” Aria didn’t move. A microsecond passed. Then she sat. Damian noticed that too. He always noticed everything. He placed a thin black file on the desk. “Your employment file,” he said. Aria blinked once. “Already?” “You were hired into my building,” he replied. “Everything in it belongs to me.” That wasn’t a statement. It was a warning. He opened the file. Flipped once. Twice. His expression didn’t change. But something behind his eyes did. “You’re from Lyon,” he said. “Yes.” “Studied international business at École Supérieure.” “Yes.” “Interned at two mid-tier consulting firms.” “Yes.” A pause. “You graduated top of your class.” Aria nodded. Damian closed the file. “Impressive.” It didn’t sound like praise. It sounded like evaluation. Then— He opened another folder. This one thicker. He didn’t look at her as he spoke. “I ran a deeper verification check.” Aria’s fingers tightened slightly in her lap. “That was unnecessary.” “It was standard.” A pause. Then he looked up. “And it failed.” Silence. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just sharp. Aria’s voice stayed steady. “Failed?” Damian turned the screen toward her. “No academic records in Lyon’s system under your name.” He tapped once. “Your internship companies don’t exist.” Another tap. “And your national registration number is invalid.” The room changed temperature. Aria didn’t move. But something behind her eyes flickered. Damian studied her reaction carefully. “You walked into my building,” he said quietly, “with a completely fabricated identity.” A beat. “And I want to know why.” --- The First Crack Aria exhaled slowly. When she spoke, her voice was still controlled. “You’re mistaken.” “I don’t make those.” A pause. Her eyes met his. For the first time… not as defiance. But calculation. “You think I lied,” she said. “I know you did.” The silence stretched again. Then— Aria leaned forward slightly. “Or someone wants you to think I did.” That landed differently. Damian’s gaze narrowed. “Explain.” “I didn’t create my records,” she said carefully. “I submitted them through official channels.” “Then someone replaced them.” “Yes.” A beat. “Or erased them,” she added softly. That word changed the atmosphere. Erased. Damian didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he studied her like a locked system he couldn’t yet breach. Then— “You realize what you’re implying,” he said. Aria nodded. “That someone inside your system is strong enough to rewrite identity data.” A pause. “Yes.” A faint tension tightened his jaw. “That’s not possible without internal access.” “I know.” Their eyes held. For the first time since she entered this building, Aria wasn’t just the subject of observation. She was part of the problem. --- Damian’s World Tightens Damian pressed a button on his desk. “Security analysis. Full identity audit. Now.” A voice responded instantly through the intercom. “Yes, sir.” Aria watched him. “You don’t trust anyone,” she said quietly. Damian didn’t look at her. “I trust outcomes.” “That sounds lonely.” That made him pause. Just briefly. Then— “It sounds efficient.” But the silence after that was heavier than his words. For a moment, neither spoke. Outside the glass walls, Manhattan moved like a living organism—cars, lights, ambition, noise. Inside the office, everything felt paused. Damian finally spoke again. “Until I understand what you are,” he said, “you remain under observation.” Aria tilted her head slightly. “And after that?” A faint pause. Damian looked at her. “Then I decide what to do with you.” There it was. Not threat. Not promise. Judgment. Aria stood. “Then I suppose I should be careful,” she said. “You should.” She turned to leave. But his voice stopped her. “Aria.” She looked back. His gaze was sharper now. “Don’t lie to me again.” Something passed between them. Not trust. Not warmth. Something more dangerous. Recognition. --- Somewhere Else Across the city, in a dim room filled with monitors and encrypted feeds, a man stared at the same name scrolling across a screen. ARIA BENNETT — STATUS: ACTIVE He zoomed in on her image. Paused. Smiled slightly. “She’s inside,” he murmured. Behind him, another voice answered. “Then accelerate Phase Two.” The man nodded. “And Damian?” A pause. The smile widened. “I finally found you.” He turned the monitor slightly. On the screen—Aria standing in Damian Blackwood’s office. Captured from an unknown angle. --- Back at Blackwood Tower Damian stood alone again. The results from security came in faster than expected. Too fast. His assistant’s voice crackled through the line. “Sir… there are inconsistencies in the internal access logs.” Damian’s eyes narrowed. “Inconsistencies how?” “Someone bypassed three authentication layers without triggering alerts.” A pause. “That level of override… it shouldn’t exist.” Silence. Damian looked out at the city again. Then quietly— “It does.” He ended the call. And for the first time in a long time… Damian Blackwood felt something unfamiliar tighten in his chest. Not fear. Not anger. Suspicion. And Aria Bennett— Was now at the center of it. --- Final Scene — The Hook Night fell over Blackwood Global. Aria sat alone at her desk, unaware she was being watched again. A shadow moved behind glass. A camera lens adjusted. Click. Another image captured. Then a message sent. TARGET CONFIRMED: INSIDE THE SYSTEM Inside Damian’s office, his screen flickered once. A new file appeared. No sender. No trace. Just one line. Damian opened it. His expression froze. Because inside the file… Was Aria’s face. And beneath it— A single sentence: I finally found you. No sender. No traceable route. No digital fingerprint his systems could lock onto. That alone was impossible. Damian Blackwood didn’t deal in impossible things. He eliminated them. His jaw tightened slightly as he leaned closer to the monitor. “Trace it,” he said into the intercom. A pause. Then his head of cybersecurity responded. “We already are, sir. It’s… not staying in one location.” “What does that mean?” Another pause—longer this time. “It’s moving through internal nodes. Like it already knows our tracking pattern.” Silence. For the first time in years, Damian didn’t respond immediately. He simply stared at Aria’s face on the screen. And something unfamiliar tightened in his chest again. Not doubt. Not fear. Recognition of something entering his system without permission. --- Blackwood Tower — Lower Executive Floor Aria had no idea her world was being rewritten in real time. She was still at her desk inside the assistant operations suite of Blackwood Global, reviewing reports Elena had dumped onto her tablet. But her mind wasn’t on numbers. It was on Damian. On the way he looked at her like she was a variable he couldn’t solve. And worse… The way he said don’t lie to me again. As if he already knew she had. Aria exhaled slowly. “I didn’t lie,” she whispered to herself. But even she heard the uncertainty in her voice. Because the truth was— She didn’t know what Damian had seen. Elena Returns “Still working?” Aria looked up. Elena Rossi stood at the edge of her desk, holding a thin tablet and a coffee she hadn’t touched. “Yes,” Aria replied. Elena studied her for a moment. “You should leave soon. The building gets… quieter at night.” “That’s supposed to be comforting?” “It depends on who’s still inside,” Elena said carefully. A beat. Then she lowered her voice. “Did Mr. Blackwood question you?” Aria hesitated. “Yes.” Elena sighed softly like she expected that answer. “And?” Aria looked down at her notes. “He checked my records.” That made Elena pause. “He did what?” Aria nodded. “And something is wrong with them.” Elena straightened slightly. “Wrong how?” “Missing,” Aria said. “Or replaced.” Elena’s expression changed immediately—less professional now, more alert. “That’s not possible,” she said. “It happened.” A long silence. Then Elena leaned closer. “Listen to me,” she said quietly. “If Damian is personally investigating you, then you need to be extremely careful.” Aria frowned slightly. “Why?” Elena didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she glanced around the office. Then lowered her voice even further. “Because he doesn’t investigate people unless something already convinced him they’re dangerous.” That sentence lingered. Heavy. Uncomfortable. And Aria suddenly became aware of how fast her life had shifted in less than forty-eight hours. Damian’s Office — Above Them Damian stood in front of the city again. But he wasn’t seeing it. He was replaying everything. Aria’s reactions. Her hesitation. Her controlled defiance. And the gaps in her file. His cybersecurity lead spoke again. “Sir… we’ve isolated something.” Damian turned slightly. “What.” “It’s not just an external breach.” A pause. “There’s internal rewriting activity. Someone has administrative-level access.” That made his eyes sharpen. “Who.” Silence. Then— “We don’t know.” Damian’s expression cooled further. “Find out.” “Yes, sir.” The line disconnected. Damian placed his hand on the edge of the desk. Slowly. Controlled. But something in the room shifted. Because now it wasn’t just about Aria. It was about his empire. And someone inside it was rewriting reality. --- Aria — The Unseen Pressure Hours later. The office had emptied. Lights dimmed automatically in sections of the building, leaving only soft ambient illumination stretching across glass and steel. Aria remained. Still working. Still thinking. But something felt wrong. Not emotionally. Physically. Like being watched. She turned slightly. Nothing. Just reflections in glass. Her own face staring back at her. Tired. Focused. Uncertain. Aria gathered her things slowly. Then froze. Her laptop screen flickered. Once. Twice. Then a new file appeared. No notification. No sender. Just a single document. ARIA BENNETT — VERIFIED HISTORY FILE Her breath caught. “What…?” She opened it. And went still. Because everything inside it— Her education. Her internships. Her birth records. Her government ID. All of it— Was now correct. Perfect. Clean. As if nothing had ever been wrong. Aria stepped back from her desk. “That’s impossible,” she whispered. --- Damian Watches the Shift At the exact same moment, Damian saw the system correction alert appear on his screen. IDENTITY FILE RESTORED — SOURCE UNKNOWN His eyes narrowed. “Restored?” he repeated quietly. That wasn’t damage control. That was interference. He grabbed his jacket. “Security,” he said into his comm. “Yes, sir.” “Lock down Aria Bennett’s access level immediately.” A pause. “Sir… her file just stabilized. Permissions are now clean.” Damian paused. That wasn’t possible. Not without authorization. Not without trace. Not without him. He turned toward the glass. And for the first time— He realized something unsettling. Someone was not just watching Aria Bennett. Someone was correcting reality around her. Aria stepped out of her workspace just as Damian’s elevator doors opened. He walked out. Slow. Controlled. His presence immediately changed the temperature of the floor again. Elena appeared behind him, tense. “Sir, I was just—” “Leave us.” Elena hesitated. Then left. Silence again. Just the two of them. Aria tightened her grip on her bag. “You checked my records again,” she said before he could speak. “I did.” “They were wrong.” “They were erased.” A pause. “And now they’re restored.” Aria frowned. “Restored?” Damian stepped closer. Not enough to intimidate. Enough to observe. “Someone is interfering with my system,” he said. Aria let out a small breath. “So I’m not crazy.” “No,” Damian replied. “But you are connected to something I can’t identify yet.” That made her go still. “Connected how?” Damian studied her face. “I intend to find out.” A beat. Aria held his gaze. “And if you don’t like what you find?” Something flickered behind his eyes. “I always like answers,” he said. But his voice softened slightly. “Even dangerous ones.” That sentence lingered longer than it should have. Between them. Unspoken. Unfinished. And dangerously close to something neither of them were ready for. --- Final Hook Far above the city, a camera lens zoomed in again. Aria. Damian. Standing too close. Too aligned. Click. Click. Click. The photographer lowered the device slowly. Then sent a final encrypted message: THE SYSTEM IS REACTING FASTER THAN EXPECTED. A reply came instantly: THEN SPEED UP THE NEXT PHASE. The man smiled faintly. “Damian Blackwood,” he murmured. “You still don’t remember her.” He adjusted the focus again— Zooming in on Aria’s face. And whispered: “But you will.
