Here I am about to be imprisoned for life and my mom is worried about what I’m wearing. Typical! She just had to bring him up too. My anger level is already explosive and she just poured gasoline all over it. It doesn’t help that there is a full moon that's stirring my demons into a frenzy. I perk my attitude up with a devious grin on my face as I try to deflect her judgmental negativity and strike back. “Ooooh, really? Do you think he’s rolling in his grave over it?’’ I ask way too enthusiastically. “Hmm, that’s weird. I guess I’m all out of f***s to give.” The back slap isn’t complete until I yawn dramatically, while patting my mouth repeatedly and add in the rolling of my eyes.  My mom looks unamused and unfazed with her arms firmly pressed to her sides. I feel a sliver of guilt for taking the low road, but it doesn’t last long as I think of everything my dad did. She is the one that was mated to him. I didn’t choose this life. In fact, they straight-up screwed me over.  “I know you’re grieving and everyone does that in their own way. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try to get a handle on how you deal with it. It’s not healthy for your attitude to go from zero to hundred like that. Try to take a breath of zen.” Grieving. Huh? Not even. Good riddance is more like it. Still I know she means well and it’s not fair to take it out on her.   “Let’s at least jazz it up with some earrings. I have the perfect pair.” I nod hesitantly while she leaves to go get them. It seems like it’s the least I can do to make her feel better about my small rebellion.  I’m wearing a long black form fitting dress with a high leg slit. On the hanger it looked simple not glamorous with a hint of scandal. Now I’m going to have to watch out as my legs and side-boobs try to play peek-a-boo all night. I was trying to go for basic with an underwhelming edge that would make Alpha Valtair want to reject me on sight. I’ll still have on my signature scowl so fingers crossed. My best friend Harlyn walks in my room with a sunny disposition that makes me want to puke. I can’t believe she actually wants to attend this torturous event.”You look un-freaking-believably hot! But, you do know that other colors exist, right? I mean you don’t have to always match your dark soul. I guess your mom thought these would help.” Harlyn hands me a set of dangled diamond clustered earrings that aren’t this girls best friend. I reluctantly put on the obscene ear chandeliers anyways.  My best friend is used to seeing me in black, but I can tell she is surprised that I’m wearing it tonight. It’s not like it’s against the law or anything. It’s just looked down upon and that is exactly what I’m going for. It’s safer to look emo then go all bridal chic like everyone else. It’s more on brand for me anyways. “You look like a royal peach,” That’s a compliment, right? “By the way, your humor has become so savage. I’m so proud.” I put my hand over my heart as I take in this special moment. When I met Harlyn she was such a goody-goody that I thought she was going to explode into a rainbow. It warms my cold dead heart to see her loosen up a bit.  “I feel honored to be regarded so highly by the master of savagery,” Her smile slowly turns into a look of concern. “You don’t look as miserable as I thought you would. How are you doing?” The question feels like a loaded gun that almost shoots me deep into my feels.  “The pit of plagues has only begun its evil inception. I’m in the numb denial phase. Just waiting to get to the stage of acceptance where I jump off the roof.”  “Oh, come on. It probably won’t suck that much. He’s an Alpha so you know he’s hot and super rich. Think of all of the power you’ll have.” I would love to switch places with Harlyn. This is her wettest dream while it’s my wildest nightmare. “Power? Please, I’ll be trapped with a stranger who will control everything.” She looks guilty so I struggle to form a smile for her. “Yeah, maybe...but,  I don’t think that you can be controlled. In my prestigious opinion you will be a boss-ass-b***h when you’re Luna.” We both laugh at how unnatural it is for her to curse, but it means so much to me that she is cursing to make me feel better.  “Thanks, I hope you’re right.’’ I’m still not going down without a fight. “We should go... the guys are waiting.” My wolf Severn and I feel so defeated as I drag my feet and huff constantly as we head outside.  As soon as I walk out I notice that my twin brother, Austin is shaking his head at me. He rolls down the passenger side window and pokes his head out. “Geez, Savy! Couldn’t find anything tighter to wear? I thought the dress was supposed to be a slap in Alpha Valtair’s face... not his dick.” I shrug my shoulders not having anything to say back.  I’m just as enraged by the dress, but he can’t know that. I’m way too stubborn to admit that I royally messed up. All I had to do was try on this abominable dress. At the time that seemed like way too much effort for something that seemed insignificant.  Cyrus slaps my brother on the chest. “Dude, not cool. Sav you look perfect.” Cyrus gives me a charming smile before he starts to drive away towards my doom.  Cyrus is my brothers best friend who became a part of the family. He’s always so protective over me. It’s so incredibly frustrating. I’m determined to show him one day that I can take care of myself.  “The Alpha won’t be seeing her anyways. This is a kidnapping.” Hmmm, Cyrus sure has a unique way of trying to make me feel better. Delusion. I think I like it. I already know that there isn’t any way out of this. I’ve spent countless hours trying to find a way. “What the fidget, Cyrus?” Harlyn screeches out furiously. She elbows me to get me to back her up before her arms fly in the air. I’m still trying to hold in laughing at her use of fidget as a replacement for f**k. It always gets me that her glittery heart holds hatred for an object that is meant to bring relaxation. Somehow, fidget spinners manage to stress her out more.  “Don’t worry. I’m going to drop you off first,” Wow, he’s really committing to this pipe dream. Harlyn exhales deeply and drops her hands to her thighs. “I hacked the guest list. Guess who’s names aren’t on it?” Cyrus looks at me with a sly smile that shines in his maroon eyes. I give him the biggest smile I can muster. This has to be the first authentic sign of happiness I’ve shown in months.  “You-you didn’t! I can’t believe it. That’s awesome!” Cyrus laughs looking pleased to save the day. “Really, Savy? Awesome? It won’t be “awesome” if you get caught. I’ve heard that the new Alpha King is a barbaric tyrant. My father told me that he killed his own father. His own father, Savy. Then he killed Beta Triven’s son right in front of him before he took his life. Just think of what he will do to you.”  “Overdramatic, much?” It takes me a second to realize Austin said exactly what I was thinking and that I didn’t actually say it. Our little twin power comes in handy most of the time. Sometimes it just annoys the ever-living-hell out of me. “They’ll never find out. Besides we have to save Savy.” Harlyn shakes her head at Austin before she gives me puppy dog eyes that she knows I can’t stand. I prefer using my sharp tongue and wit to get what I want. She knows she has lost this argument, but I can tell she isn’t happy about it. “Whatever. I don’t want any part in it. Savy, please, please come with me.” We pull up to the extravagant palace and I grunt at its appearance.  Not today, Satan. “I need one more night of freedom.” Harlyn tries her best to bite back her disappointment, but I know her all too well. She starts smoothing her pristinely straight copper hair to collect her emotions. Then she shoots out of her seat and starts marching out of the car.  Harlyn stands outside looking for the right words to change my mind. An impossible task for most so she should be commended for trying. “Ugh, it’s useless trying to reason with three stubborn vigilantes. I just want it noted that I think you’re all barking mad.” We laugh and start howling at her. Harlyn looks around before giving us a punishing stare for embarrassing her. I love her to death don’t get me wrong, but it’s instrumentally annoying how much she cares about her reputation. “Duly, noted. We’ll be careful. Now go have fun. You look like a fire storm. They’re going to be able to feel you coming.”Harlyn sees right through my sincerely flattering statement that may have had a double agenda. Buttering up someone can’t hurt, even when its intentions are obvious. She gives me a crooked smile, before she sticks her tongue out and walks away. Seeing her leave makes me wonder if it’s worth putting this off for one more day. Nah, screw that!
