Chapter 6 — The First Trap

761 Words
Amara had expected Elena to be a threat—but not this… brazen. The morning light spilled through the penthouse windows, but it did little to warm the tension in the air. Amara sat at the long conference table, reviewing documents Lucas had handed her the night before. Every page was a reminder: in this empire, knowledge was survival. A soft knock at the door made her jump. “Elena,” she whispered under her breath. Before she could react, the door opened, and Lucas stepped in, calm as ever—but with that sharp, dangerous gleam in his eyes. “She’s here to test you,” he said quietly, leaning against the doorway. “Do exactly as I tell you.” Amara nodded, though her heart raced. She didn’t know what Lucas had planned, but instinct screamed it was dangerous. The elevator doors opened, and Elena glided in like a predator. “Good morning, Amara,” she said sweetly, but every word dripped venom. “I hope you’re ready to play the game.” Amara swallowed, forcing a smile. “I was born ready.” Elena’s lips curved into a mocking smile. “We’ll see.” Lucas stepped between them, his presence towering. “Elena,” he said, voice sharp, “one wrong move, and you leave. Now.” Elena tilted her head. “Oh, I’m not here for him. I’m here for you… to see if she can survive. To see if she’s as clever as she thinks.” Amara felt her stomach drop. This wasn’t just rivalry—it was a calculated test. The first challenge came quickly. Elena led Amara to a private boardroom on the 30th floor. On the table were documents, contracts, and financial reports—all real, all important. “You have one hour,” Elena said, voice cold. “Prove you can handle his empire. Or fail, and everyone will know you’re weak.” Amara’s hands trembled slightly—but she forced them steady. She had studied Lucas’s empire meticulously. Every number, every transaction, every potential threat was etched into her mind. As she worked, Elena hovered, watching every move, smirking at every hesitation, whispering comments designed to throw her off. “You’re slow,” Elena murmured. “He deserves better than this. Are you sure you belong here?” Amara’s pulse quickened. Her hands moved faster, calculating, countering Elena’s subtle traps in the documents. She realized quickly: Elena hadn’t just created a challenge—she had planted potential disasters in the files, hoping Amara would fail. One wrong calculation could ruin a deal worth millions. One hesitation could make her appear incompetent. And yet… Amara pressed on. Meanwhile, Lucas watched from the glass walls, silent and lethal. Every glance he gave Amara made her heart skip, every shadowed smirk made her pulse race. She hated that she felt it—but she needed him to see her strength. With five minutes left, a sudden alert flashed on one of the computers. A security breach in one of Lucas’s shipping routes—a real threat Elena had planted. Amara’s eyes widened. Time was slipping. She had to act. Swiftly, she recalculated, corrected the numbers, and neutralized the threat before anyone could notice. Her hands were shaking, her mind racing—but she had done it. Elena stared, stunned. “Impressive… for a beginner.” Amara’s chest heaved with relief—but before she could relax, Lucas appeared in the doorway. “You handled that well,” he said quietly, almost gruffly. “Better than I expected.” Elena’s expression darkened. “This isn’t over,” she said, spinning on her heel and leaving the room. Once the door closed, Lucas stepped closer, dark eyes piercing. “You risked everything,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “One mistake… and you could’ve lost more than a deal. You understand?” Amara nodded, heart hammering. “I understand.” His gaze softened ever so slightly, but only for a heartbeat. Then the storm returned. “Good. But don’t forget—survival is only the beginning. Winning my trust… that’s the real challenge.” Amara realized in that moment that every day in this world was a battle—a test of strength, wit, courage, and heart. And for the first time, she felt it: she wasn’t just fighting for his attention… she was fighting for her life. Seven days. That’s all she had. Seven days to survive Elena, survive Lucas’s empire, and survive Lucas himself. And every second, the stakes were climbing higher.
