CHAPTER 1 — “Level 999 Returns”
I died at Level 999, screaming inside a battlefield where the sky had stopped being the sky, something broken, something wrong, where creatures roamed like reality itself had given up.
The last thing I saw was the World Devourer tearing through what remained of humanity’s final raid. Gods, awakened kings, guild masters, everyone who once thought they mattered, turned into nothing in front of it.
Then everything went white, but this time… I was f*****g back. And history wasn’t going to repeat itself. When I opened my eyes again, I wasn’t dead. I was… breathing. My chest rose and fell like nothing had ever happened. I recognized this ceiling. My bedroom ceiling.
I turned my head, there was a cracked mirror leaning against the wall, but I saw myself, younger, alive in a way I hadn’t been for years.
“…No way.”
My voice came out rough.
I was eighteen again. This wasn’t possible. I sat up too fast, my heart finally catching up with my thoughts, but I already knew what I was going to see before I even checked. Still, I forced myself to speak.
“System…”
I reached for my phone with trembling hands and checked the date.
June 30th.
Exactly thirty days before the creatures invaded Earth. I remembered everything, all of it. Ten years of hell sitting inside my head like it had never ended, like I hadn’t just crawled out of humanity’s worst nightmare.
I stood up slowly, my legs almost betraying me. I walked to the window, and I froze, Outside…Cars were moving, People were talking, a vendor was arguing with a customer over change. A Life, a Normal life. Like the world wasn’t about to end.
My fingers pressed against the glass. I knew this moment, I knew this peace, because I had seen what came after it.
Thirty days, that’s all I had, that's all humanity had. Thirty days before the System arrived, before the sky turned blue, before humanity stopped being human.
I exhaled slowly. My reflection staring back at me, and for the first time since I died…I felt something sharp in my chest.
“I’m really back…”
My voice lowered.
“This time…”
My hand slowly tightened into a fist.
“I’ll do it right.”
I didn’t move for a long time. I just stood there, staring through the window like the world had forgotten how to end. Thirty days. That was all humanity had, thirty days before the sky turned blue. Before people started screaming in streets that would never be safe again, before monsters learned how to walk through reality like it was nothing.
My reflection in the glass stared back at me, Same face but different eyes. Because this version of me standing there now… wasn’t the same man who died at Level 999, but a man who had been through hell. All ten years of it, Ten years of watching cities fall, Ten years of burying people I couldn’t save, Ten years of fighting a war humanity was destined to lose.
The eighteen-year-old staring back at me from the window looked untouched by any of that. He still had dreams, he still had a future, still believed tomorrow was guaranteed. I almost laughed. Tomorrow, the word felt foreign.
In the apocalypse, tomorrow was a luxury. A privilege, Something that could be stolen by a monster’s claws or a single mistake. My gaze drifted toward the bustling street below. People walked past each other without a care in the world. A couple argued near a bus stop. A group of students laughed as they crossed the road. An old man pushed a cart loaded with fruits.
Nobody knew, Nobody had any idea that in thirty days, their entire world would cease to exist. A knot formed in my chest. In my previous life, I had been one of them. I was Clueless, Unprepared, and very much Weak. I clenched my fist. Never again.
This time, I knew every major event that would happen during the first year of the apocalypse. I knew where the first dungeons would appear. I knew where hidden rewards would spawn. I knew which opportunities would create legends. And I knew which mistakes would kill millions.
A slow breath escaped my lips. The future wasn’t fixed anymore. Not with a Level 999 survivor standing thirty days before the end of the world.
My eyes shifted to the calendar hanging on the wall. June 30th. The date felt surreal. A second chance, A miracle, or maybe… just a curse. I didn’t know which, but what I did know was that standing around wouldn’t change anything. I turned away from the window and reached for my phone. There was too much to do. Too many people to save. Too many monsters to kill. And not nearly enough time.
Thirty days. The countdown had already begun, but this time…I would be ready. I unlocked my phone and stared at the screen. The time read 8:17 AM. Such a normal number, yet I knew exactly how many normal mornings the world had left.
Thirty days, no, that's incorrect. Twenty-nine and a half now. I opened my banking app. The balance was pathetic. Just a few hundred dollars, barely enough to survive a month, let alone an apocalypse. Back then, I never really paid attention to money because when the System arrived, wealth lost most of its value overnight.
But before the System?
Money was power. Resources were power. Preparation was power, and unlike everyone else on Earth, I knew exactly what was coming. A memory surfaced. Three days before the System activated, the stock of a small logistics company would skyrocket after securing a massive government contract. A week later, it would become worthless.
In my previous life, I hadn’t even known the company existed. Now? I knew every major economic shift before the apocalypse. The corner of my mouth lifted slightly. Future knowledge was really a terrifying weapon.
I spent the next hour making notes. Food. Medicine. Water purification tablets. Portable generators. Fuel. Batteries. Tools. Weapons. The list grew longer with every minute. Most people prepared for next week, but I was preparing for the end of civilization.
A sudden vibration interrupted my thoughts. My phone buzzed. A message from one of my classmates.
Bro, you coming to school today?
I stared at the text for several seconds. School, right, Technically, I was still a student. The idea felt ridiculous. I had killed dragons. Led raid armies. Watched continents burn, and somehow I was supposed to worry about attendance. A dry laugh escaped me.
Not today.
I typed the reply and tossed the phone onto the bed. There were more important things to do. My gaze drifted back toward the window. The peaceful city stretched into the distance. Cars, Buildings, and People. All of it would change very soon.
Some of those people would become heroes. Some would become monsters. Most wouldn’t survive the first six months. I closed my eyes. Faces flashed through my mind. Friends, Allies, Enemies. The dead, so many people dead. Then one face remained, my mother. The memory hit harder than I expected. The evacuation convoy, the monster horde, the screams, the blood.
I opened my eyes immediately. No. I wasn’t reliving that again. Not this time, not ever again. A cold determination settled over me. The world could burn, the System could come, the monsters could crawl out of every dungeon on Earth. It didn’t matter…..This timeline would be different, because this time…I wasn’t starting as an eighteen-year-old student; I was starting as the man who had reached Level 999.
And soon, the world would learn exactly what that meant.
