Waiting for Kit in his study, Mr. Holloway poured a glass of Madeira, offering none to his son, his expression as stern as Kit had ever seen. Sitting down, he came to the point at once. “I did not think I had to remind a child of mine about keeping company worthy of our status,” he said icily, every inch a hard-headed businessman rather than an indulgent father.
Without invitation, Kit sat in the chair opposite, facing his parent. His heart thumping, he was relieved to hear his voice was calm and steady.
“Papa, I have the utmost respect for your judgement and values. I hope I have always followed your example as a dutiful son. In life and in business, you have taught me the value of repaying a debt and knowing the difference between integrity and duplicity.”
