As much as she loved her pony slaves, Doris Halperstein was never satisfied to leave them as they were originally delivered to her. The young men and women who arrived at her Westchester doorstep were always in their prime, having been recently released from the hum drum routines of boarding school and colleges. They came voluntarily and were, as far as the institutions where they had been or their parents were concerned, on a year’s sabbatical in an exclusive student exchange program “abroad,” which meant that they were unlikely to be texting family and friends very often at all.
