We slept for three hours. I know because I watched the clock reach seven AM and calculated backward to when we'd gotten into bed and forward to the nine AM meeting and decided three hours was what we had and closed my eyes and made it work. Adrian was already up when I emerged. Coffee made. Dressed. The controlled exterior was fully reinstated after a night that had taken it apart in several places. He handed me my cup without a word, which was its own kind of language. We drove to Reyes's office in the early morning quiet of a city that didn't know everything had shifted overnight. Reyes looked like someone who had not slept at all. She had the focused energy of a woman running on the specific fuel of being close to something important and unwilling to stop moving until it was done.
