Calm and Clear Minded

1856 Words
Liam’s POV There she was, standing in her garden with Amare and Ekon. She wanted so badly to see her mother and I don’t blame her, I would’ve wanted the same thing if I were her. Only one thing was bothering me. Amare and Ekon had told us that humans aren’t able to get through the portal, only fairies. None of us are fairies except for Aria which means she has to go alone. I did not like that idea one bit. I know she can take care of herself, but going into a completely different dimension for the first time and all alone is scary. We don’t know who or what can be on the other side except for fairies. And what if something bad does happen to her there? They had told us that she would end up in the fairy kingdom and as long as Aria can stay in her fairy form there, then nothing bad should happen. “Clear your mind, don’t let any emotions distract you or you won’t be able to transform. Emotions can only make you stronger in the form you’re already in. But you need to be calm and clear-minded in order to change.” Ekon said to Aria who stood a bit away from them concentrating. I stood on the porch sheltered from the light rain. She hasn’t been to school the last two days because it’s too risky since she hasn’t gained control yet. I came after school to see her progress, she looked tired. “I can’t, it hurts.” She said frustrated and turned around with her back facing us and her hands on her head. I felt a tiny stab in my chest, seeing her like this didn’t feel good at all. “We can take a break. You’ve been at this for long enough today and it’s raining. Let’s go inside.” Amare told her but Aria spun around and took one deep breath. “No, the rain calms me. Let’s try one more time after a bit, just give me a few seconds.” She said determinedly. Then she saw me standing and smiled. I waved and smiled an encouraging smile at her. I had bought strawberries after school for her, I knew she loved them and I just wanted to give her something sweet because she was working so hard. I went back inside, grabbed the berries that I had put on the table in the kitchen, and washed them. Then I came back with them and when she saw me she smiled from ear to ear. Amare and Ekon looked my way. They had been trying to find an easier way for her to transform in the guidebook while Aria took a few seconds to rest. I told them that they could go inside while they figured it out because of the rain. They nodded and walked back inside. “Strawberries!” She exclaimed excitedly and walked towards me. Warmth filled my heart. “Aw, you didn’t have to.” She said and took a bite of one strawberry. “I know. I just wanted to buy some, and who knows? Maybe they’re magic.” I said and she chuckled. “Yeah, maybe they are.” I wasn’t sure when I started feeling this way towards her, but I was not ready to tell her yet because I wasn’t one hundred percent sure if that was just a friendly feeling or if it was something more. Amare and Ekon came back after a while, the rain had kind of stopped but it was still cloudy and the air was wet on my face. I back up a bit when she closed her eyes, took a deep and calm breath to clear her mind. We all watched her when slowly, transparent wings started growing smoothly out of her back. They glowed a little purple on the edges and then she suddenly opened her eyes. As she looked up her eyes were glowing purple. She was so beautiful. Amare and Ekon smiled from ear to ear, Amare had tears forming in her eyes. I just stood very still, speechless and afraid to break Aria’s concentration. Then she looked at us and frowned. “Why did nothing happen again? This time I felt nothing! Not even a minor headache.” She sounded disappointed. She crossed her arms and then saw Amare’s tears in her eyes. She looked at Amare confused. “Why are you crying?” She asked her and Amare pointed at her with no words. Aria looked back and saw the tips of her purple glowing wings. Her jaw dropped. “OMG!! What? I did it! Really?” She turned in circles trying to see her wings better and I chuckled a bit. Then she stopped and hugged Ekon. “But I didn’t feel anything. I usually feel pain somewhere in my head when I try to transform, why was this painless?” “You’re not supposed to feel pain while transforming, it’s supposed to be easy for you. If you feel pain when trying to transform, then that means that your thoughts or feelings are all over the place. Maybe you were just stressing over the need to change so you can see Clarissa.” Ekon said and let go of her. “I guess I was. It makes sense, I was afraid that if I didn’t change I wouldn’t be able to see mom ever.” She said and looked at me. “I guess those strawberries were magic after all.” She smirked. She learned how to fly the next day. It was getting easier to transform and she was in a much better mood. Kylie came by a few times to see how she was doing. We wanted to tell Hailey and Dylan but Amare and Ekon had told us that humans aren’t allowed to know anything about this. Having me, them, and Kylie know is already a risk. Kylie really loved it when Aria needed to practice flying, mostly because she wanted Aria to hold her as she flew. I also got to fly a bit, but we were too heavy for her to carry for long so we only got short rides one night when people were asleep. No one could get over how Aria glowed when she was in her fairy form. She was absolutely breathtaking, at least for me she was. We were eating in the kitchen because Aria needed to get ready for her first trip to the fairy realm. Kylie was excited and wanted Aria to tell her every last detail about how everything and everyone looked like. I was mostly worried, but I hid it behind a smile. “Okay are we ready?” Amare asked as she stopped by the doorframe to check on us. I felt my face become a little pale at that question. “Mhm.” Aria said. She took one last bite from her sandwich and left the rest on the plate, then she followed Amare out. Kylie and I were still in the kitchen. “EEEEEE she is literally going to another dimension, Liam!” She exclaimed and stood up so fast and dragged me with her to the living room. Amare and Ekon told us to hold onto two crystals, each in one hand. We made a big circle around Aria, she had already transformed into her fairy form. We made eye contact and I could see by the way she rubbed her knuckles together that she was nervous. I winked at her with a little smirk as if this situation was no problem. She seemed to calm down by seeing how chill I was about this, but I was not. She winked back at me with a smile and then looked away. Ekon started reading weird words out loud from the book that he had put down on the floor in front of him. We all held up our crystals out to the sides as the air in the living room started going in circles. Ekon was now screaming those weird words, that I couldn’t understand. The wind was really strong now, it was really loud and Aria was in the middle of the storm. We all tried to stay still in our places but Kylie was struggling and was about to fall to the side. I couldn’t really keep my eyes open because of the wind. “Kylie! Do not fall or lose the crystals or the circle will be destroyed!” Amare shouted, fighting the sound of the storm. I could kind of form out Kylie’s face and I could see she was struggling really hard to stay in her spot. But then bright white light appeared from the middle of the storm that blinded me for a second. My eyes adjusted to the brightness and I could hear Ekon’s voice. “Aria! This is it. Walk into it!” I saw Aria step into that big wall of bright white light and then disappear. The light wall sucked into itself and disappeared too. At that moment everything stopped and I heard a thump, Kylie fell on the floor as soon as the wind had disappeared. “Well, this is how to open the portal to the fairy realm, kids.” Ekon said as he picked up the heavy guidebook off the floor and closed it. “This was amazing.” I could hear Kylie say, still on the floor sitting and watching the place where the light wall had been. “She is going to be there for a while so in the meanwhile I’m going to make dinner. You both can stay for dinner if you like.” Amare said sweetly with her hair everywhere, still fixing it after it had been pushed around by the wind. “I actually have to go and eat with my family tonight but thank you for offering free food.” Kylie said and stood up. She looked at Amare with serious eyes. “Call me the second she’s back.” “Of course, dear.” And with that Kylie turned to leave. “See you later, everyone!” She said and closed the front door behind her. “I can stay. I want to wait for her.” I said and Amare nodded with a smile. "Don't worry. She will be okay." She said and I just gave her a smile as I sat down on the sofa. Then she went to the kitchen and I could hear that Ekon had already started cooking, they always cooked dinner together. I was worried and anxious. There was no way of knowing what was going to happen to Aria. I really hope Amare is right and that she'll be fine. I hope I'm just being paranoid. But there are bad fairies. What about if she encounters one of them? Or a few of them and will be in danger or gets hurt? I knew I couldn't do anything about it but I couldn’t leave. I needed to stay and wait for her.
