Aria’s POV
I felt so many lost emotions when I saw my mom for the first time. She looked so tired. I wanted to make it up to her but I didn’t know how and I knew that none of this was my fault.
“This is the kitchen.” She said a bit awkwardly, trying to dry her tears. I guess she felt a bit shy for I was now 18 years old.
I nodded and followed her into the kitchen where I sat down. She had a big bowl of fruits on the table and suggested I’d eat some. I took something that looked like an apple, but more orange and smaller, and in a heart shape. A fat heart shaped apple.
“It’s safe for you to eat.” She said and sat down in front of me.
I took a bite and oh my it tasted so sweet and fresh.
“I can’t believe you’re here. You’re actually here.” I heard her say as she observed me.
I couldn’t believe I was looking at my biological mother, who is a fairy.
“Why are you here?” She suddenly said and she sounded a bit worried.
“What do you mean why? I’m here to see you.”
“But how? Do you know how dangerous this is with you coming here?” She said and her shoulders tensed up.
“I know, but I do have control over this. Much easier than it was the first time.” I said but I did feel myself trying to hold my fairy from. I was struggling a bit because now I was getting a bit tired after the day.
“But if they find out who you are...”
“They won’t.”
She just stared at me as if she was thinking about something. Then she just slowly nodded unsurely and asked.
“When did the change happen?”
“At school. Someone there is a fairy but I’m not one hundred percent sure who it is yet.”
“But who do you think it is?”
“A girl named Alyssa. But we aren’t sure yet.”
“Mm..”
There was silence for a bit. I continued eating the fruit while looking around. The place wasn’t very tidy but I guess she hasn’t had the energy to do any of those things after being separated from her loved ones.
“It’s…so good to see you. You’ve grown so much. You’re already 18.” She said, her voice breaking.
“It’s so good to see you too…mom.”
It felt a little weird calling another woman my mom but she was my biological mother after all so of course, I was going to call her mom.
She smiled softly and looked down. Then she looked back up and put her hand on the table in front of me. I put my hand in hers.
“I’ve never forgotten the moment I held you in my arms. You were so small, so fragile. I love you so much Aria. You do know how you got that name right?” She said gently. Her eyes were starting to water again and she held my hand with both of hers.
“Yeah, Amare and Ekon said that I got my name so that I would have a piece of my dad with me.”
She nodded and smiled.
“Yes. After your father…we wanted you to have something from him. Sadly, I was taken away not long after.” She said sadly.
I wanted to change the subject for it seemed like it was too much for her and I didn’t want to be reminded of what happened to my family.
“How did you and dad meet?” I said curiously and with that the energy became a little lighter in the room.
“Well, I was assigned to a human school at 17. That’s how I met your father. Did Amare and Ekon tell you about how fairies get to go to earth?” She asked and I nodded.
“Well, I knew right away that he was my mate because-” She said but I cut her off.
Mate? That’s what the kids were talking about earlier, something about a mate.
“Mate?” I asked. She raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, did Amare and Ekon not tell you about that?”
I shook my head.
“Well okay, a mate is when two fairies meet. They will glow when they first see each other which shows that they’re mates and that they’re destined to be together. It’s all very sacred and it’s the strongest connection with the strongest feelings you’ll ever experience.” She explained.
“So a mate is someone who’s destined for you?” I asked. She also talked about that you’d glow when you’d first see them. I looked towards a window in the living room out through the kitchen door. I remembered that Eric did glow and myself. He also did say something about a mating bond? Something like that. I started going into a zone trying to figure out if Eric was my mate and all.
Mom looked at me and when I saw that I jumped a bit. She then smiled as she had figured me out and she crossed her arms as she leaned back into the chair.
“Tell me. What were you thinking about just now?”
She seemed to already know the answer.
“Uh well. I’m not sure…” I said awkwardly not looking into her eyes. Should I tell her about it? Yeah I should, this is a fairy thing and she is my fairy mom after all.
“You know those kids that were with me earlier?”
She nodded. “Yes, I’m surprised you managed to get friends on the first day here. I guess you’re a social butterfly.” She said with a sweet smile.
“Well, not exactly. That mate thing you were just talking about…there was this one guy…” I said but she gasped and put one hand up to cover her mouth.
“REALLY? YOU FOUND YOUR MATE? ALREADY?” She said excitedly and jumped out of the chair. “I can’t believe it. My daughter, a half fairy. I didn’t know she would have a mate. Well she must, she is still part fairy. Oh, this is just perfect!” She said walking in small circles talking to herself. “Who is he?”
“Uh, I just know his name and that he was born here.” I said embarrassed that I didn’t know more about the guy I was destined to be with.
She looked at me suddenly disappointed. “How do you not know more about him. What’s his name? What color is he? What does he do?!”
“I didn’t know what happened, I just got a feeling, followed it, saw him, and suddenly glowed! I freaked out mom!” I said and stood up out of my chair. I walked out of the kitchen because I had a similar feeling. Like, someone was still there in front of the house.
“But his name is Eric and his color is green.”
“OoOoOo how do you like him?” She followed me to the window.
“He is absolutely the most gorgeous guy I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”
“Believe me. No one will ever be more handsome than he is to you.”
I peeked out and there he was. Eric. I felt a tingle in my heart and stomach. He stood there on the sidewalk as if he was waiting for something. Where were the others?
“Oh my, is that him? Look at his figure. Tall. He must work out. You’re right. He is really handsome. More handsome than most I’ve seen of fairies actually.” She said and then looked at me proudly. “I’m so happy you found your mate.”
I smiled. The sun was setting and it was getting late. Mom told me to come to the living room.
“Do humans also have mates?” I asked and sat down on the soft couch.
“They have something, but the fairy mate bond is much stronger than human connection. But they do have a soulmate connection which is pretty strong. Actually, when fairies are in their human form they can’t really feel the mating bond. Fairies need to be in their fairy form to find their mates. That’s how I knew your dad was my mate. I was in my fairy form, in hiding of course, but I suddenly glowed. Then I saw him. I got to know him as a human and he did feel something towards me too. Then I showed him my true self and he accepted me for who I was. A complicated story made simple and short.”
She said and was looking for something on the book selves.
“So a human can’t feel the mating bond but dad was human. How could he have been your mate? Why was a human chosen for you?” I asked. I understood why I had a mate, I was half fairy, but why did mom have a human mate?
“I have no idea actually. It’s supposed to be impossible for humans to be mates. But the world works in mysterious ways. You are really special Aria. Maybe this all was supposed to happen because you were supposed to exist.” She said and opened a big brown leather book.
I smiled.
“I hope Eric isn’t waiting for you because you have to go back home. You can’t stay here for too long. The fairy queen possesses powers that can sense who is in her kingdom, I mean if they are fairy or not. You are half fairy and it might be hard for her to figure out that something weird is going on, but she will eventually. She usually knows right away after she scans the kingdom with her mind if unwelcomed energy is here or not.”
“But I need to come again.” I said and stood up. She looked at me and nodded.
“You can. But never for too long because she can’t know about you. Your fairy side will keep you safe but you can’t hide your human side forever. You were born a human so you will have to change back and recharge, after that you can change back into a fairy.” She said. “And I can already tell that you’re tired.”
I nodded. I was exhausted. It took a lot of practice just to change into a fairy, but holding my fairy side was not that easy either. I needed to change back.
“Maybe with more practice you can stay a fairy for a long time. After all, this is your first time." She said and paused. "What you did today was dangerous, but it worked out so I am very proud. I’m very proud of who you’ve become.” Mom said and put a hand on my shoulder while holding the book in the other.
“Thank you, mom.” I said and hugged her. I had tears. This was really my mom. She was so nice. She also had tears in her eyes.
Then she snapped her finger and another bright white wall of light appeared behind her and she motioned me to go.
“You can’t go through?” I asked but she shook her head.
“They have locked me inside this dimension. I can make the portals but I can’t go through them. It’s like walking into an invisible wall. Like how humans can’t come to this dimension. That’s why Amare and Ekon have never been here before.”
Yeah, they did talk about that with me before. But I just wanted to make sure.
“I’ll come back mom.” I said, she smiled and waved at me as I went through.
