The Gala

The ballroom was larger than Daisy had expected. Too large. Too bright. Too full of people who looked as though they belonged there. She accepted a glass of sparkling water from a passing server and immediately regretted it when she realized she had nothing to do with her hands. A familiar problem. Whenever she felt nervous, she became painfully aware of every movement she made. Every step. Every glance. Every breath. She settled near one of the marble pillars lining the room and silently promised herself she would stay for an hour. Two, if she was feeling particularly brave. Then she could leave. Nobody would notice. Nobody ever did. The thought should have comforted her. Instead, it left an odd ache behind. A sharp tap against crystal echoed through the ballroom. Conversations softened. Heads turned. Daisy followed their gaze. At first, she didn't understand what had changed. Then she noticed the shift. The subtle awareness moving through the crowd. Like a ripple spreading across water. Someone important had arrived. Curious despite herself, she looked toward the entrance. Two men had just stepped inside. Tall. Dark suits. Confident in a way that couldn't be taught. One moved through the room as though attention meant nothing to him. The other smiled politely at someone nearby and immediately seemed to own the entire space. People noticed them. Not because they were trying to be noticed. Because they couldn't help it. Daisy's fingers tightened around her glass. She didn't know why. Nearby, someone whispered. "Carter and Mercer." "Guests of honor." "I heard they're impossible to get a meeting with." The names meant nothing to her. Yet she found herself looking again. And then— One of them turned. The darker one. The quieter one. His gaze swept the room. Past the donors. Past the investors. Past the crowd. For a second, it seemed completely random. Until it stopped. On her. Daisy's breath caught. Not because he smiled. He didn't. Not because he approached. He didn't. He simply looked at her. As though he had noticed her standing there. As though she existed. The moment lasted no more than a heartbeat. Then someone spoke to him. His attention shifted away. The spell broke. Daisy looked down immediately. Heat climbed into her cheeks. Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. She didn't even know who he was. And yet... For reasons she couldn't explain, her pulse refused to slow. Across the room, she could feel the weight of possibility settling quietly into the evening. The kind that arrived without warning. The kind that changed everything. And for the first time since entering the ballroom... Daisy wasn't thinking about leaving.
