Chapter Four
The night spent in jail was the longest night of Fern’s life. Every time an officer took her out to an interview room to question her, Fern was left feeling more and more confused. They asked crazy questions that had nothing to do with her life. Over and over she repeated her mantra. “I don’t want to live with Lowell anymore. I want to be myself. I need you to make him give me my ID back and set me free so I can get a job, make my own decisions, and be with Doug. I love Doug.”
From time to time she napped in her cell, but mostly she lay awake hoping that soon they’d believe her, soon they’d tell Lowell to give her back her things and let her go.
