I crawled over there.
As I adjusted my backpack, the beam of light illuminated a metal shelf attached to the wall. My heart leapt. It was a small emergency larder for the crew. There were several sealed bottles of mineral water, a package of crackers wrapped in plastic, cans of soup, and a couple of thick wool thermal blankets—the kind that itch against your skin but retain body heat like magic.
I dropped my phone to one side, took off my soaked raincoat, and shivered as I wrapped myself in the thickest blanket I could find. My hands barely obeyed me because of the cold, but I managed to open a water bottle and gulp down half of it in one go.
Then, I opened the package of crackers. They were dry and tasteless, but I forced myself to chew them slowly, swallowing every crumb.
