My heart leapt so violently that I felt a dull ache in my ribs. Was she asking me to lie down beside her? After all the venom we'd hurled at each other that morning? After she'd called me an ice monster and rubbed the existence of another man in her life in my face? I didn't think. I didn't allow myself to rationalize it because I was afraid that if I hesitated for even a second longer, she'd regret her offer. I crossed the distance between us with cautious steps, as if afraid of shattering the fragile glass bridge I'd just built between us. I let myself fall to the opposite end of the bed, keeping a safe distance of thirty centimeters.
