There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Arthur knew me well enough to know that when I adopted that tone, nothing could change my mind. “Fine,” my partner sighed, resigned. “I’ll handle the board. But tell me you at least found her. Tell me all this madness has some meaning.” I looked up at the ceiling, thinking about the woman sleeping a few feet above, carrying the future of my family name and my entire life on her shoulders. “I found her, Arthur,” I replied, an involuntary smile, uncharacteristic of my usual cynicism, creeping into my voice. “And it’s far more complex than I thought.
