The storm finally began to weaken shortly before dawn, leaving behind dark clouds that drifted slowly across the early morning sky. Along the coastline, broken pieces of the destroyed ship remained scattered across the shore, serving as silent reminders of the night’s tragedy. The waves were calmer now, though they still carried fragments of wood and rope toward the beach. Several fishermen from the nearby village searched the shoreline for survivors and supplies that might have washed ashore. Among them were Adrian’s father and younger brother, both fearing the worst after hearing news of the shipwreck.
When they finally discovered Adrian sitting beneath a rocky cliff, relief spread across their faces. His father rushed forward and embraced him tightly, hardly believing that his son had survived such a disaster. Adrian was weak and exhausted, but he managed to assure them that he was alive and recovering. He knew he should tell them everything that had happened, yet the memory of the mysterious girl remained fresh in his mind. Something inside him urged him to keep that encounter a secret.
The village of Seabrook Cove was small compared to the bustling cities found elsewhere along the coast. Most of its residents earned their living from fishing, boatbuilding, or trading goods with neighboring settlements. The people lived simple lives, waking before sunrise and spending long hours working near the sea. Although life was not always easy, the villagers were close-knit and relied on one another during difficult times. Adrian had spent his entire life among these people and knew almost every family by name.
For the next several days, Adrian remained at home recovering from his injuries. His mother prepared herbal remedies while his younger brother eagerly listened to stories about the storm. Friends and neighbors frequently stopped by to express their relief that he had survived. Despite the attention he received, Adrian found it difficult to focus on their conversations. His thoughts continually returned to the mysterious young woman who had saved his life.
Every night, memories of her filled his mind. He remembered her dark hair flowing through the rain, her calm voice, and the strange glow that surrounded her when she healed his wound. Most of all, he remembered her eyes. There had been kindness in them, but also sadness and caution, as though she carried burdens he could not understand. The more he thought about her, the more impossible it seemed that she had been real.
Meanwhile, far beneath the ocean’s surface, life in Aqualoria continued according to its usual rhythm. Merchants opened their stalls, scholars studied ancient records, and young merfolk attended lessons throughout the city. The magnificent Crystal Palace remained as busy as ever, with servants constantly moving through its halls carrying messages, supplies, and ceremonial decorations. The palace guards maintained their strict routines, changing shifts throughout the day and patrolling every section of the royal residence. Security had always been a priority for the Seaborn family, especially in times of uncertainty.
Mira attempted to return to her normal duties, but concentration proved difficult. While arranging flowers in one of the palace chambers, she accidentally dropped an entire basket of moon lilies. During meetings, she often found her attention drifting away from her work. Even simple tasks that she normally completed with ease now required extra effort. Her encounter with Adrian lingered in her thoughts far more than she wanted to admit.
Queen Nerissa quickly noticed the change.
“You seem distracted lately,” the queen observed one afternoon while reviewing preparations for an upcoming ceremony. “Is something troubling you?”
Mira immediately lowered her gaze. “No, Your Majesty. I am simply tired.”
The queen studied her carefully for several moments before nodding. Although Nerissa accepted the explanation, Mira could tell she was not entirely convinced. Few things escaped the queen’s attention. The realization made Mira even more determined to hide the truth.
Later that evening, after completing her duties, Mira once again traveled to the northern reef. She told herself she only wanted to make sure the storm had not damaged the area. Yet deep down she knew that was not the real reason. Part of her hoped to see Adrian again, even though such a meeting would be dangerous.
As she approached the familiar cove, she noticed someone standing alone on the beach below. The figure stared out at the ocean as though searching for something hidden beneath the waves. Mira immediately recognized him.
Adrian.
Her heart skipped unexpectedly.
For several moments she remained concealed among the rocks, watching him from a distance. He appeared healthier than before, though the wound on his forehead had not fully healed. The setting sun cast a golden glow across the shoreline while seabirds circled overhead. Everything seemed peaceful, yet Mira sensed that this moment carried importance.
Adrian slowly stepped closer to the water.
“I don’t know if you’re real,” he said quietly, speaking toward the ocean itself. “Maybe I imagined everything.”
Mira remained hidden.
He laughed softly and shook his head. “I’m probably talking to myself.”
A smile appeared on Mira’s face despite herself.
For the first time since the storm, she felt certain that saving him had been the right choice.
Yet neither of them knew that their growing curiosity toward one another was already setting dangerous events into motion. Above the sea, Adrian longed to understand the mysterious girl who had rescued him. Below the waves, Mira struggled to ignore feelings that should never have existed. And somewhere within the Crystal Palace, forces were already beginning to stir that would threaten both their worlds.
