CHAPTER 10 : THE SHADOWS CLOSING IN

242 Words
The days after their discovery in the science lab felt tense. Lila and Aiden moved carefully, aware that someone at school was watching their every move. The coded notebook had given them their first breakthrough, but it had also made them targets. During lunch, Lila noticed a figure across the cafeteria, eyes following her and Aiden. She nudged him. “Look,” she whispered. Aiden’s jaw tightened. “I thought so. They’re getting bolder.” That afternoon, they decided to return to the rooftop to review the notebook again. The sun was low, casting long shadows across the terrace. Lila felt a chill — not from the evening air, but from the sense of being hunted. “This is getting serious,” she said softly. Aiden nodded. “Yeah. But we’ve come this far. We can’t stop now.” As they pored over the codes, Aiden reached over to steady her hand as she tried to decode a complicated sequence. Their fingers touched, lingered, and neither pulled away. The danger was real, but so was the connection between them. Lila looked up at him. “No matter what happens, I’m glad you’re with me.” Aiden smiled softly. “Me too, Lila. We’ll face this together — mystery and… everything else.” The first stars appeared in the sky, twinkling above the school. Lila realized that even in the shadow of danger, there was warmth, trust, and something tender growing between them.
