CHAPTER 2: THE ROOFTOP MEETING

374 Words
Lila’s steps were hesitant as she climbed the narrow staircase to the rooftop. Her heart raced with a mix of fear and curiosity. Every creak of the old stairs made her flinch, but she kept going. When she finally pushed open the rooftop door, the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the empty terrace. Aiden was there, leaning against the low wall, arms crossed. His usual smirk softened slightly when he saw her. “You came,” he said simply. “I… I didn’t know what else to do,” Lila admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. She shifted uncomfortably, clutching the yellow note in her hand. Aiden pushed off the wall and walked closer. “Relax. I’m not here to scare you.” Lila studied him. He didn’t look intimidating here. The wind ruffled his hair, and the golden sunlight made his eyes almost warm. Yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling that he had secrets — secrets that might pull her into something complicated. “I… why me?” she asked. “Why leave me a note?” He hesitated, then smiled faintly. “Because I need help. And… I think you’re the only one who can give it.” “Help with what?” Lila asked, curiosity overcoming her nerves. Aiden’s eyes flicked toward the edge of the rooftop, then back to her. “There’s something going on… something at school that could ruin a lot of people. I can’t handle it alone. I need someone smart, someone careful. That’s you, Lila.” She blinked, unsure what to say. Her mind raced — school scandals, gossip, danger — and somehow, she felt both nervous and excited. “Okay,” she said finally. “I’ll help. But… you have to tell me everything.” He nodded. “Deal.” For the first time, Lila felt the thrill of stepping into something bigger than herself. Something that could change her school year — and maybe even her life. And as the sun dipped behind the distant city skyline, she realized that nothing would ever feel ordinary again. If you want, I can write Chapter 3 next, where they start working together and their personalities begin to clash and connect, building tension and friendship.
