Chapter 4

The next day, I took a cab to the company. When I reached the conference room door, I took a deep breath and pushed it open. Almost everyone was already inside. Aaron sat at the head of the table, his suit crisp, his expression calm. Brielle sat on his right. That seat used to be mine. I only glanced at it briefly before walking to the back and sitting down. Once the meeting began, Aaron didn't waste any words and got straight to the point. "I'm sure everyone knows what today's board meeting is for," he said. Soon, Brielle also stood up. She held the prepared materials, her voice gentle, her expression composed. "Ms. Winslow has given so much to the company. I'm only temporarily stepping in to share the burden. I also hope Ms. Winslow can rest up and get well," she said. Several people in the conference room nodded slightly, as if they had truly been persuaded by her. Someone from legal quickly handed me the documents—a thick stack. I looked down at the handover agreement and suddenly remembered many years ago, when I first brought Aaron home. My father had sat on the sofa and remained silent for a long time. Later, he asked me in private if it absolutely had to be him. I said yes. He asked me again what if I were wronged in the future. I was young then, and said I'd accept it. Thinking back, it was truly laughable. It turned out that people really could lie to themselves so completely over love. I held off signing for a long time. Finally, Aaron lost patience. "Amara, this is a board meeting, not a place for you to act petulant," he said. I looked up at him. Brielle held out the pen to me, her voice still soft. "Ms. Winslow, just sign it. It's for your own good too," she said. I didn't take it. I just looked at Aaron and asked him softly, "What if I don't sign?" Aaron looked at me; there wasn't a hint of warmth in his eyes. "Then we'll enforce it according to procedure," he replied. The conference room fell silent at once. Everyone was looking at me. Just then, the conference room door was suddenly kicked open from the outside. A cold, heavy voice cut through the room. "Let's see who dares suspend her today!" A voice rang out, sharp and final.
