There was a building ahead, one that was in a better state than the factory but still abandoned. It was once a fort. Sapphire wondered why there was a fort all the way out here where nothing important was, but she could tell it was definitely once a fort.
It was made of stone, a grand double door entrance, four rounded corners, lots of windows – just at the side she could see there must have been eight windows - then she noticed above the door carved in stone a year, 1583. Sapphire assumed that it was the year that it had finished being built but she knew nothing about history.
“Dominic, go and see if there is another way – if there is use that way inside, if not come back through this way.” Dominic did just that and went around looking for another entrance. Meanwhile Sapphire silently walked to the front door, looking around it cautiously to see if there could be any trap. She heard a groan from Jackson inside; after hearing it her adrenaline kicked in and she just thought, stuff it, then she opened the door. Nothing happened so she walked inside. Ahead of her was a grand staircase that split into two, one going left and the other going right as it led upstairs. There was a lot of treasure in this hallway itself, those silver knights, tables, chests, everything. Sapphire shook her head, mumbling to herself, “I am here for Jackson.” Just then she heard another scream from Jackson. She looked above her. That defiantly came from upstairs, she thought, but then something said in the back of her mind, how do you know that it isn't just the echoes and that really it is downstairs? Ignoring her subconscious, she ran up the steps two at a time, being absolutely silent. That was when she heard the voice’s behind a door.
“Yes but the way you are kicking him in the head he will probably have a concussion, plus we need to make a plan now, Sapphire is very close.”
“What about the guy she is with? You think it’s her boyfriend?”
“Ahh, nice idea, make her chose between saving them and joining my team, she is sure to join then, there is no way that she would risk one of their lives.”
“She will-” he coughs a little then whispers, “outsmart you bastards.”
Jackson. She instantly thinks. Dominic. Boyfriend? Ha that will never happen. Focus! You need to think of a plan, they want to know what you are. You know they have been following you which is why you have been extra careful, you don’t want to show them too much. Without even thinking of a plan she walked into the room.
“I advise you leave my brother alone.” Sapphire’s voice echoed through the room.
The demon spun around and looks at her, stunned, after not even hearing her come in, not even sensing her, then he composed himself. “I will leave your brother alone. When you tell me what I want to know?” The demon stated folding his arms grinning at her.
“What is it you would like to know exactly?” Sapphire questioned with her arms folded too, she was analysing him, finding his strength and his weaknesses, his strength was a very big strength but he had a very large weakness too.
“I want to know what you are. I mean I assumed you would have told you brother, then I realised you didn’t tell him because you think he will probably hate you possibly even kill you.” he answered grinning down at her unconscious brother. Damn it I never should have called him in, I should have just dealt with all by myself least he would be safe right now. the demons wouldn’t have known about us being family if I didn’t call him. Sapphire was thinking to herself when the demon seemed to grow impatient. “So, are you by any chance going to tell me what you are, or do I have to hit him again?”
Sapphire stares at the demon, sensing his powers, seeing that he has the ability of healing so she uses what she knows against him as she answers, “No but what you can do is untie him, give him some water and heal him.”
“Not before you tell me what you are.” He hesitated, then looked stunned again. “...Wait, how do you know I can heal people?”
“I can sense your power, I can also sense that right now you are terrified of me because you don't know what I am, which means you don't know what you are up against and that means you do not know what my strengths and weaknesses are.” Sapphire stated, she knew the demon would see Jackson was one of her weaknesses but he was quite the opposite, he is what made her so strong.
The demon smirked. “I know one of your weaknesses,” he said, pointing to Jackson. “You do realise he isn’t going anywhere until you tell me what you are.”
“Just so you know, I could set him free before you even think about hurting him again, just a little warning for you.”
“Shall we put that to the te-” But before he could finish the sentence suddenly Sapphire was at the other side of the room untying Jackson, and before the demon even turned around again to face her she had Jackson in her arms.
He raised his eyebrows, impressed. “Well. That. I wasn't expecting. You are very fast indeed, I haven't not been able to follow someone before. If that makes sense? Well, at least I know how fast you are now.”
“That wasn't the fastest I could go, not by a long shot actually...” As she spoke she shifted Jackson gently over her shoulder, “...but what I want to know is. Who are you and why do you want to know what I am?”
“My name is Abaddon, I am sure that you have heard that before?”
“Ahh, now why would I have the demon of destruction on my tail?” as she speaks she thinks, Not just demon of destruction but the king of hell
“Now I knew you would know I was the demon of destruction but how did you know that I am the king of all demons? Only demons know that.” Then Abaddon began to smirk. “Which means that you are demon or at least part demon, what else are you?”
She gulps Ahh crap he can he is a type that can read my mind, she thinks but keeps herself composed, “Like I would tell you what I am. You would just use me for one of your destructions and I will not be used by the likes of you.”
“Do you not mean the likes of us? Since you didn't deny that you were a demon, I am guessing you are - how come you are part demon? No human can be both demon and human, they are either demon or human, how come you are different?”
Sapphire grinned evilly as she broke into the story. “Because I was stronger than one of your measly little demons, she tried to possess me, and she did for a while, but what she didn't realise is that I was speaking some mumbo jumbo in Latin in my own head. And guess what? I gained control, leaving her prisoner inside me. Made her watch me kill her family and friends rather than the other way around.”
“Now you have a lot to say for yourself and you are overly confident, and I don't like cocky, human. Demon. Whatever you are.” Abaddon clicked his fingers and three demons appeared out of thin air. Sapphire looked at them then lay Jackson down gently, sitting him against the wall as he muttered unconsciously.
“What I want to know, Abaddon, is why can't you do your own dirty work? You always get your little followers to do it, which means you are afraid of me.”
Sapphire grinned and at super-fast speed she flung her blade at one of the demons. It hit him in the chest and he wailed, flashing red before turning into ashes. As this happened a demon jumped on her back. She stumbled backwards to slam him with strength against the wall, and as he let go of her she backed away, a snarl like a wolf coming through her teeth. The other demon tried to sneak up on her but with her sense of hearing she just spun on her heel and stabbed him with the other demon knife she had. Then it was just her, the last demon that was summoned and Abaddon.
Sapphire spun around on her feet, facing them both. Abaddon held his hand out to the final demon to indicate to him to stop fighting. He looked at Sapphire. “What are you?” he asked again with fascination in his voice. “You are like the most perfect fighter. I have always been waiting for someone like you to come along and now you are here I don’t want to let you leave.”
“You can only try to keep me here. I am leaving and you won’t hurt me or my brothers. If you do you are just dooming yourself because I will kill you if you even try to hurt anyone I care about.”
Abaddon smirked. “Is, what is his name? Err, oh yeah, Dominic, one of those people you care about?”
Sapphire glared at him. “Where is he, what have you done with him?”
The grin became evil. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
Anger ran through Sapphire and all she wanted to do was kill Abaddon but she knew if she did then she would never find out what happened to Dominic. She had to be smart but right now but all of her worried terribly about Dominic; how could she have let this happen, she just left him alone, what was she thinking? Deep in her subconscious a voice said you were only thinking about your brother, you didn’t even bother to think what could happen to the man that saved your life, you abandoned him, and all you think about is yourself.
You’re selfish.
Sapphire hesitated, thinking before speaking. “Why would you want Dominic anyways? I don’t understand, you don’t even know who he is, not really.”
“Well, if he is with you then he must be important to you, which is why we took him. Maybe he likes you or you like him.” Sapphire’s face tightened as what he said was true, she did like him. He saw her for who she was. The voice inside her head saying but he doesn’t know who you truly are, you made sure that no one knows what you truly are, now this Abaddon wants to know what you are so it can go all to putt soon.
As Sapphire and Abaddon argued, Jackson started to come around, his vision blurry at first but when his sight cleared he saw Sapphire standing her ground with two demons in front of her but no fighting go on, which he didn’t understand. Why was she just standing there talking to them and why were the demons just standing there talking to her? He wanted to find out more so he just pretended to still be out cold and he lay as still as he could as the debate went on.
“He is a friend, nothing more and nothing less,” Sapphire confirmed.
“Does he know that? I mean if you're going to go and save him he might think more,” Abaddon teased.
“We are friends, he knows that, the key to friendship is to never leave someone behind; maybe that is why you do not have any friends. Now, if you will excuse me, I’ve got a brother already saved and now I’ve got a friend to save.”
“You know he might be dead by the time that you find him, he is so far away and in a place you will never look,” Abaddon taunted.
“You maybe the king of demons, Abaddon, but you do not scare me. You are underestimating me just like everyone does, I have never used the full extent of my power and when I do you will wish that you never messed with me or my family. After I find Dominic I am going to come back and kill you, Abaddon, that is a promise,” Sapphire threatened, totally aggravated. She went to pick Jackson up, putting him over her shoulder again, then walked out as Abaddon spoke.
“I’ll be here waiting for you, my little warrior,” he replied thoughtfully.
Sapphire spun on her heels, speaking angrily. “I will never be your 'warrior', I will never fight on the same side as you, ever! Do you understand me?” Then she turned back around and returned to her car, laid Jackson in the back of the car then got in the driver's seat. Then she remembered it was Dominic's car. She pulled the panel under the wheel off, got two wires and puts them together over and over. At first it didn't work, but as she got more frustrated the engine suddenly roared to life. She mumbled, “Thank you, God.” She reversed, did a one hundred and eighty degree turn then drove at seventy mph in country lanes, speed drifting round corners, she used her senses to look try and find Dominic. She knew Abaddon was bluffing when he told her that Dominic was so far away, that would be stupid of him. She knew that Abaddon wanted Dominic close by so that he could deal him as he sees fit. He wouldn’t be so stupid to kill Dominic.
Suddenly she jumped out of her skin and slammed on the brakes.
