Chapter 15: I Don\'t Believe This

“It's a-” Jackson started till he was interrupted by Sapphire opening the door, alarmed. “I just got a phone call; a work call. There has been another attack – this time it sounds like a vampire. I don't know for sure though. Something is going on in the supernatural world. We need to find out and quick. First zombies, then demons, now vampires. If you asked for my opinion they are working together as one, they want something bad. One of you two is going to have to come with me whilst the other looks after Dominic and does research.” Leo was getting furious. “Can't you see we are in the middle of something?” he exploded out. “That can wait, this can't.” Sapphire rolled her eyes by his outburst. “A Demire-wolf is as it sounds, a demon, vampire and werewolf. Don't start with the its impossible blah, blah, blah because it isn't impossible, here I am, I repressed the demon, and controlled the werewolf and vampire. Got it? Jackson, you coming with me?” Leo just stared at her whilst Jackson stood up, walking to her. “Come on then. What makes you think that it is a vampire this time?” Sapphire walked through the living room, giving Dominic a kiss on his head as she passed, then she grabbed her car keys and went to the car. “The body was fully drained of blood and only two little bite marks, not blood and guts everywhere, in fact it sounds like there is hardly any blood at all at the scene.” Sapphire got in the car and Jackson opened his door when Leo ran out. “Jackson, you aren't going anywhere with that monster! I won't let you, she might hurt you or kill you or even turn you into one of her!” Inside the car Sapphire chuckled and opened the car door again, putting one foot out and standing up, the other leg still in the car. “Leo, I can't turn him fully into me, now that is literally impossible, he would have to have a demon inside him then I'd have to bite him as both vampire and werewolf separately and even then it probably wouldn't turn him. And Jackson is wearing that demon necklace that stops him being possessed, plus unlike you I don't try to kill me family when I'm in the right state of mind.” Jackson looked at Sapphire and shrugged, convinced by it. “Leo, she is right and I'm going with her. She is also right about something going on in the town, see if you can find something about what could be happening in our town.” Leo started to protest. “Jackson you really cannot be serious about going with that thing?” he asked, staring at her then him, not understanding how he could trust her with his life. Jackson burst out, “That ‘thing’ you are referring to is our sister! You will speak about her with respect! If it was not for Sapphire, I would probably be dead and Abaddon the King of Hell would still be alive, so would Mammon and Carson and three other demons! So don't be so ungrateful. Come on, Sapphire.” Sapphire and Jackson climbed into the car and Sapphire started to reverse out and head to the scene. Leo kicked the wall angrily. “I don't believe it, she must have done something to him, why else would he willingly go with that vicious monster?” He went back inside and glanced over at Dominic. Seeing that he was still resting, he carried on and headed to the kitchen after grabbing his laptop, to do some research on how demons could make humans do what they want. He looked and looked and found nothing, so he searched vampires and found out that they could hypnotise humans to make them do what they want when they want. “Oh god,” Leo mumbled to himself. “She could be feeding from him.” He got up, grabbed his gun, knife and stake, went through the living room, out the door and went looking for a car he could steal. * * * As Sapphire and Jackson were in the car heading to the scene, Sapphire started a conversation. “Jackson, thank you. you know, for sticking up for me. I know it was probably hard for you to considering what I am, and since you haven't really seen me in years. I bet that was the first argument you two had in years.” Jackson makes a chuckling sort of noise. “We argued all the time on hunts, he always thought that he was right about things, that he knew how to make the best plans, what I could do in the spare time. He wouldn't even let me come and see you. I wanted to come and see you for years but he always said that we would bring danger with us and you wanted to get away from the danger; that is why you left us.” He hesitated. “But look at you, you were in danger all along and you were hunting but keeping a normal lifestyle at the same time, you had, have one foot in each world. I mean I envy you, I think that Leo does too.” Sapphire glanced at Jackson stunned. My brother envying me? Why? I am a monster aren’t I? “Why would you envy me? You two had each other, I had no family with me. When I did a hunt, I did it alone. I know that at least one of my brothers wants me dead, and I don't know what you want and to be honest I don't know if you know yourself.” Sapphire parked up, getting out of the car and looking at the scene. Jackson doing exactly the same. “Come on, let's get this over with.” They both walked over. The police greeted her with nods and the policemen guarding the scene looked at Sapphire then at Jackson. “Dr Humington, who is the man?” Sapphire looked at the policeman. “This is my brother, he is expected too. I talked to Detective Chief Inspector Briggs, she was happy to let him come as you are all at a loss as to what is happening to the town.” The policeman radioed to check then after the confirmation he let both Jackson and Sapphire past. They walked to scene, Jackson whispering, “That was so awesome! Having this job was an amazing idea to keep an eye on the supernatural world.” They walked to the body which was in a field near a massive forest. Sapphire put her gloves on and did the normal checks on scene find out if they were moved or killed on site. Trying to find out how they were killed. Sapphire looked at the neck, seeing two puncture marks but no blood anywhere around. She looks around the body to see if there was anything else that might prove against this being a vampire but she found nothing. Someone that didn't know what they were looking for would have just thought that they died from a heart attack or something like that but since Sapphire knew what she was looking for, she knew what to seek for each individual creature, she knew which creature made different wounds. She looked at Jackson to confirm it. “It was a vampire. I'm a hundred percent sure, unless there is suddenly another creature that drains blood.” Jackson looked at Sapphire. “I don't think there is, so it is a vampire we are hunting for now? Well, isn't this just great? Wait, can't vampires like sense each other or something?” Sapphire looked at Jackson and shrugged. “I don't know, I have never tried that, remember I was trying to keep as human as possible.” A voice from behind said, “So what is your verdict?” Sapphire spun around, startled. “Ah, DCI Briggs, you startled me. I'd say someone was trying to kill in a way a vampire would, I mean with no blood in the body and only two puncture wounds in the neck, that's how a vampire kills, but the strange thing is there is no blood anywhere. I'd say your killer is probably a supernatural enthusiast.” The way DCI Briggs was looking, the frown and the tight lips, made Sapphire decided to expand on what she was saying. “You know with the first kill looking like animals, but an animal wouldn't do that, not any around Longbenton anyways. So I'd say that kill was supposed to look like a zombie attack. The question is which psychos would do these sort of things? It's disgusting and vile.” Briggs sighed. “That is something I would want to know, well thanks, I'll get on my team about what you think, maybe get a couple to find out about any events about the supernatural or anything like that. Contact me if there is anything else that you discover whilst in the lab. I sometimes don't know that the world is coming to.” Sapphire looked at her. “I'd like to know the same too.” She let the police take the body to her laboratory, then walked to the car, getting in. “Do you want to come with me to my lab or do you want to head back?” Just then Sapphire's door was opened and Sapphire was pulled out. Sapphire automatically grabbed the person’s arm pulling it under themselves and behind their back, then she saw who it was and let him go. “What the hell is wrong with you, Leo, you could have seriously hurt me.” “That's the whole point! Hypnotising Jackson the way you have, what the hell is wrong with you? Oh wait, you're a monster,” Leo replied with poison in his tone. Sapphire frowned, completely confused. Jackson climbed out, looking at Sapphire then past her to see who hurt her. “Leo? What the hell are you doing? We were just heading to her lab. I mean our sister has a lab to herself, how handy and great is that?” Jackson grinned excitedly. “We would never need to fake anything because we can just ask our sister.” Leo looked at him with anger in his eyes. “You think she is so amazing! She has been hypnotising you to make you do what she wants you to do!” Sapphire looked completely offended. “If I was 'hypnotising',” she started, already using finger quotations, “then wouldn't you not think that I was hypnotising you and Dominic? I respect everyone for who they are and what they have. I think you are jealous that I am bonding with Jackson. You think that I am taking him away from you and that I do not want to bond with you too but you always push me away. I don't understand why but you do. I love you both the same but you obviously don't love me at all, you always make an excuse to try and hurt or kill me when we should be working together as a family to save the town and the people in it, but how can we when we can't even be civilised with each other? Why don't we make a deal or something?” Leo narrowed his eyes, he pulled his gun out pointing it at her. “Why would I trust you? I might agree with you then you might do some of this hypnotism thing to me. I want to trust you, but with you having a demon inside you how can we know who is in control?” Sapphire rolled her eyes, getting annoyed at the gun being pointed at her by her brother. “Do you mind lowering your gun when there are cops about? I mean, is there any need for you to pull it out on me? Even if I did want to ‘hurt’ you I wouldn’t do it in front of the cops of all people. You are lucky that they haven’t seen you yet. Oh, and by the way, I am always in control of this demon, I have been for eight years and it has never come out to play since I got it in control.” “You think this is all fun and games, don’t you? I mean, you could seriously hurt someone if your guard is ever down. You could hurt me or Jackson or Dominic,” Leo taunted evilly. “You know something, Leo? You are more likely to hurt any of us than I am to hurt any of you; I mean I invent something amazing and you say it doesn’t work, yeah well, I have saved Jackson and Dominic with the knife that supposedly doesn’t work and Jackson killed Abaddon with the knife that ‘doesn’t work’ so what does it take for you to believe that I do not want to cause any harm to either you or Jackson or Dominic?” Sapphire said, not in a pleading way but in a considerate way. Leo replied simply, “Kill yourself. Commit suicide. He smiled at his answer thinking it was a smart answer, he she truly cared about us all then she would destroy the monsters inside her. Jackson suddenly came back to life from shock and stood protectively in front of Sapphire. “No! That is not going to happen. I will not let her do that, why would you even want your sister to do that? If you ask her to do that I will never speak to you ever again and I mean it. Sapphire will not die because of you. Got it?” he said, staring death into Leo’s eyes. Leo stared back, taken aback. “Jackson, she is something we hunt, how can you protect her like that?” “Well, she was the one that came to save me, not you; she was the one that had to outsmart the King of Hell to get me free and what were you doing? Sitting in her house not helping whatsoever, then she didn’t even have a break before going to look for Dominic even when I was questioning her about what Abaddon meant. She answered and drove and was opening her senses to look for him, it was terrifying for her but she did it for the both of us. Do you know what that meant for her? It took her months to figure out how to control her inner demons and she had to go through that because we weren't good brothers to her, we weren't doing what brothers should do. Protect her. Then she invites us to a hunt and she ends up looking out for us rather than the other way around. She is the youngest of us yet she is smarter and more logical than either of us put together, she came and saved us using powers she was terrified of opening up in case she changed but she hasn't changed. So don’t you be a hypocrite about her trying to kill us. Sapphire, come on, we have a body to examine thoroughly and Leo has Dominic to look out for,” Jackson explained then rounded up the conversation. “I cannot believe that you just put that against me, Jackson. After everything we have been through in the past you pick her over me?” Leo replied, as hurt as if someone had stabbed him in the chest. He felt numb and tingly all over. Jackson and Sapphire just climbed into the car again and Sapphire drove off to the lab. Jackson was panting with anger and punched the dashboard. Sapphire looked over in disbelief. “You didn't just punch my car, did you? Why would you do that? Look, you really don't need to defend me all the time you know, I can look out for myself and if he wants to kill me that is his problem isn't it? He'll be living with it for the rest of his life, not you. You’re making up for not protecting me when I was younger, he isn't, and it is his choice, isn't it?” When she noticed Jackson nod his head she said, “Well then, stop trying to blame him for things, ok? I don't want you and him falling out because of me, I want us to be a proper family, one that looks out for each other, a family that has each other's back, a family that can talk to each other about things that mean something to us.” Sapphire hesitated then sighed, shaking her head. “But it seems that is never going to happen.” As she talked she parked in her personal parking space then got out, going to her laboratory, Jackson following her, trying to memorise every corridor so if he ever needed her he knew where she'd be. He still couldn’t believe how far she had come. She has two lives, a normal regular life and a dark side life. She uses her regular job to help hunt. Why didn’t either of us think of that? She can examine bodies without being questioned, she can be first on the scene without people questioning why she is there. She is amazing, it doesn’t matter what she is, she has fought to be who she is now. I cannot believe how Leo is acting, I think Sapphire is right. He has to be jealous of us that is the only explanation that would fit. I have to protect her from our murderous brother.
