There was noise behind me and then I heard the sound of a whistle. The students paved way and then there was a figure between me and Jeffrey.
"Dude, stop this!" He said and pushed Jeffrey.
"Stay out of this" Jeffrey spoke annoyed pointing to him.
"That's an order Jeffrey!" He ordered and Jeffrey stopped. My head was down all the while as I tried to cover my body with my hands. I didn't know who this person was, but all I wanted was for it to stop. Jeffrey actually stopped which could only mean this person also had authority.
"The show is over everyone leave." He said and everyone dispersed to various locations. Jeffrey and his group left with anger.
I felt a warm jacket fall on my shoulders and he used it to cover me.
"Are you okay?"
I nodded with tears. I tried hard to lift my head up despite the fact, I didn't want to, still, I had to know who saved my life.
Gabe Williams! The new cute boy at school. He was the only student who could have been able to order Jeffrey to stop, after all he was a staff too. Who would have thought that we would meet in such an embarrassing moment of my life. I held to the hood and covered my body properly in it.
"Thank you." I blurted.
"It's okay."
"I should go now." I said and turned. Without looking back, I walked out of the school.
I felt like committing suicide. My legs were too heavy to walk. At this time I wished my dad would just come pick me and I regretted ever telling him not to come pick me. I tried to reach for my phone but my hands were too weak. I zipped up the hood and walked to the ice cream store. I needed some ice to cool my nerves.
I just finished five buckets when my phone rang. It was my mom.
"Hello mom..."
"Are you okay! Are you safe?! Where are you? Are you hurt?"
I could hear tension in my mom's voice. I looked at my wrist watch. It was five already!
"Mom I'm fine."
"We've been looking for you everywhere, we even went to your school, where are you?"
"I'm at the ice-cream store. I'm coming home now." I hung up even when I knew she was about to say something like, wait I'll come pick you up.
I left the store and began my unending journey home. I stopped abruptly on my path. That feeling again. It was so intense this time, my heart beating pretty fast and I was suffocating. Something was pulling me. I had to be somewhere and I could feel it. My eyes glowed gold. I felt my feet itch, it wanted me to run. But to where? The urge was much, I held to the wall and shut my eyes to stop this feeling. It became worse. I opened my eyes maybe I was wrong to shut my eyes in the first place. I took a step, immediately I ran, so fast. I looked behind me and saw that I was far away from where I stood before. I took another step and I ran so fast again that I crashed against the wall. I was panting, I needed to be somewhere that only my legs knew the way. I couldn't stop the urge to move, I took another step. I ran so fast again and then I stopped.
"Aries concert?!" I thought.
How did I get here in a few seconds.
The crowd covered the vehicles I hid at a corner watching.
"Stacy, Zoey and Tatiana?" They came out of different vehicles.
I saw Jeffrey Logan, Evan and Aiden from another vehicle. The fans cheered. I couldn't take my eyes off Jeffrey as much as I wanted to. I watched him walk in and then I caught sight of the bill board that was written ARIES giving off different colors. It shook, it wanted to fall and Jeffrey was walking to it. Before I could shout out to stop him, he was already under the board and it fell. I ran to him and moved him away. The post fell and everyone shouted in fear, smoke filled the entire place that it was hard to see.
"Jeffrey! Jeffrey!" Evan called looking for him. Some security men tried to take them in so they could be safe while the others looked for Jeffrey.
I saw someone, the person was backing me, but I definitely knew it was a female. I stood up and looked behind me. That post was about hit me for sure,
But how did I get here?
Maybe she...
She saved me, she pushed me away from that post,
but why?
"Who are you?" I asked.
"Who are you?" I asked again. I tried to look at her face but I couldn't see it, she was backing me. I walked slowly closer so I could see her face. She took a step and then ran so fast that all I could feel was the breeze. I ran a little further and looked everywhere but I didn't see the girl. Immediately the security men ran to me.
"Sir, are you okay?"
"Yes, she was here."
"She? who Mr?" Another asked on alert.
"The girl who saved me." He muttered.
"We should go away from here now." Another said and directed Jeffrey to a door and he entered.
Stacy ran and embraced him tightly while he wrapped his arms around her
"Dude, are you okay?" Evan asked worried.
"Yeah I'm fine."
"I was scared." Stacy said releasing him, her eyes were wet.
"Hey, I'm fine. Don't cry, don't ruin our make up."
"That was so fast, how did you manage to run from there before the post could hit you?"
"I didn't jump out of there by myself, she pushed me out of there."
"She? Who?" Tiana asked.
"You all didn't see her? The girl who pushed me out of there? She was wearing a white hood on white pants."
"There was no one there Jeff, it was just you and you jumped out of that place by yourself, we all saw you."
"No, there was someone, she was the one who pushed me out of there. I didn't see her face because she was backing me...." He recalled how she ran so fast.
"Oh!! Now I get why you didn't see her, she was too fast, almost like she was disappearing that's why you all didn't see her."
"I think we shouldn't present today. The accident has shocked him too much, he needs to go to the hospital." Zoey requested.
"Yes I agree with Zoey, we should go to the hospital." Stacy said with her hands on his arms. She scrutinized him with her eyes to ensure he wasn't hurt anywhere.
"No. We are not going anywhere. I'm fine and we are going to present today alright? Let's just forget about what happened earlier and focus. I hope we can all do that."
They all nodded but looked at each other with doubt.
The hosts of the Aries concert came into the room with a few engineers and security.
"What happened here? What? Did you invite us here so we could die?!" Stacy asked them annoyed.
"Why didn't you cross check everything before inviting people over!" She added.
"I'm sorry everyone. We cross checked everything, I don't know what really happened." Stanley one of the host spoke.
"I'm sure this was done by someone, the stand was tampered with." An engineer spoke.
"Be ready for legal action." Zoey said.
"Wait! Zoey, everyone, calm down. I'm fine. As the engineer said, someone tampered with it, so how about we leave them to do their investigations and get to the bottom of what happened. I'm fine. I'm really fine." He said calming everyone down.
"Thanks Jeffrey, we will get to the bottom of this. But at the mean time, you all should stay here and get some rest. We'll alert you when you are up." Stanley said.
"Sure." Jeffrey answered.
I realized I was home already in a few seconds. I opened the door and stomped in.
"Baby how are you." Mom asked with worry all over her. She embraced me.
"I'm fine." I said and pulled myself from her embrace and walked straight upstairs. I fell to my bed and tears filled my eyes.
How?
How could this be?
Why?
Why did I go there to save him? Why do I have a connection to him? Why did I feel that strong pull to save him? No it's not possible, it's not fair. Maybe I'm his guardian or something. How will I be a guardian to my worst enemy? Someone who humiliated me in the public? No. This is the greatest punishment I can ever get. I rolled on my bed clutching to my pillow in a river of tears.
My door opened. My parents. They slowly walked to me wondering what would have happened. They sat on the bed while I stayed still. I didn't want them to know.
"Angel, what is it?" Davis said and placed his hand on my shoulders and sat me up.
"You're crying? What happened? And whose hood is this?" Brenda asked.
I was silent. I didn't know where to start answering from.
"Did something happen in school today?" My dad asked in a soft sooting voice that I couldn't resist.
"Mr McDowell, he saw someone on my desk. He entered and asked me who it was, I couldn't lie to him, so I told him the truth. It was Jeffrey. After school, Jeffrey came and ordered me to undress before everyone. I removed my clothes till my underwear when someone came to save me. That explains this hood.
"This is unacceptable?! Who does that boy think he is, he is an animal. I'll will not take this lightly."
"Honey, we'll need to go to her school tomorrow, we need to report him to the principal." My mom added.
"No! No!! I never asked for your help. If you go to my school, you could get things complicated."
"You don't have to be scared honey, we'll take care of everything." Davis said.
"Dad! Mom! No! I don't want you to make things worse for me. I can take care of myself please!" I said and lay back on my bed and wrapped myself with my blanket. My parents knew what that meant, I wanted to be left alone.
"At least, have something to eat?" Brenda requested.
"I'm not hungry."
I heard the sound of my door, they'd left, I slowly shut my eyes.
••••
A woman putting on a white apparel with a veil that revealed only her eyes rode on a horse. She was being chased by armed men. Suddenly an arrow was shot through her heart and it gave off a white flare.. She fell from her horse and began crawling on the floor. Her blood stained the ground. She stretched out her hand and a flare erupted from her palms. Immediately a giant oyster shell appeared before her. She laughed and cried at the same time. It was an open space, she wanted to protect the shell. She clenched her fist with her last strength and then her head fell. Her attackers surrounded her on heir horse. They looked forward to see that the forest before them was too deep that no human nor animal could pass through
She had disguised the open space to look like a forest. Immediately, her body burned away Into tiny luminous particles until, she was gone.
I opened my eyes, it was a nightmare. Everything in my room came falling down as usual. I looked at my lamp sternly and it hanged on the air while I dropped it slowly. I blinked and my eyes turned normal. It was morning already.
Who is this woman in my dreams?
What was she trying to protect in that shell?
Could she be trying to tell me something?
I rubbed my hair to erase the thought. I stood up from my bed and went to the washroom. I have a long ahead, I have to go to school, my hell.
In class, I took my phone and decided to check what was trending on the students page and realized they were talking about me.
"What Jeffrey did to Sapphire wasn't fair, it was inhumane."
"How could he order a girl to undress in the public?"
"You know for the first time, I hated the decision he took."
"Poor Sapphire, she couldn't even defend herself but kept on crying."
"I couldn't even watch, I left the scene. The sight was horrible."
"Sorry Sapphire."
I opened my mouth surprised at the enormous comments. This was something new. No one ever dared to speak against Jeffrey, but now, they all did. Though they sounded appealing than angry, at least they spoke up. Someone sat besides me and I knew it wasn't Vanessa. I turned to check who it was, Gabe Williams!
"Hi!" He waved.
"Hi! What are you doing here? First this is not your seat and second, you haven't been in this class before."
"Yes, this is now my class, I guess whoever has seat has been given a space somewhere else."
Immediately Vanessa walked in and took an empty seat by the extreme just then, the teacher entered. noticed some more empty chairs. Jeffrey Evan and Aiden weren't in class.
After class, I went to the rooftop. I was sick and tired of how people praised my enemies on how cool they were at the concert. When I said enemies, Evan was involved. He wasn't there when I needed him the most, maybe he was on Jeffrey's side. After all, he said he was his best friend who'll support him through thick and thin.
I felt someone behind me, it was Vanessa's scent. She sat besides me
"Hey." she spoke
"Hey." I replied and silence fell.
"Today is uncle JoJo's birthday." she broke the silence.
"Hmm.... I remember."
"Do you also remember that we always visit the zoo during his birthday?" she asked
"Yap. He'll say animals are one of the most beautiful things on earth. Just tame them and they'll be your friends." l answered.
We both giggled.
Uncle JoJo was the best thing that ever happened to me. l was close to him than my parents, spending the week with him and weekends with my parents. Some people even mistook him as my father because of how close we were. My dad and him always had childish quarrels about me. He wasn't so pleased that I was close to his brother than him, but I couldn't help it, Uncle JoJo was too much awesome to be with. He was a scientist, but that didn't help to save his life when sickness hit him, he died of cancer. That was the worst day of my life. Or should I say I and Vanessa's life, he was also her superstar.
I stood up to leave when Vanessa held me back.
"Please, don't go. Let's celebrate uncle JoJo's birthday together as we always do. At least we should do this for him."
"You shouldn't be here. And if you can, I can't." I said and took my hand leaving but she still followed me. On getting outside, I saw a crowd of students gathering outside and wondered what happened. I passed through the crowd and saw that it was Jeffrey, he was burning something. I turned to leave when I recognized a box, it was the box uncle JoJo bought for me. It had everything he bought for me, our memories in it. What was it doing here? It has always been in my locker? What was it doing here on fire! Jeffrey was burning it!
"No No No!!" I screamed and ran to the fire, I wanted to put it out but Vanessa held me, she was scared I'd get burnt. If only she knew that the fire might hurt me but I'll heal in a few seconds. she wouldn't have stopped me. Still I was a little thankful in my head that she helped me. My powers isn't something anyone should know about. I shouldn't show it to anyone. My eyes glowed . I guess my heart wasn't as lenient as my mind, it wanted to put out the fire. I fell to the ground helpless as I watched the flame. Jeffrey and his friends left.
I stood up and turned to Vanessa.
"This is all your fault!"
"Sapphire what do you mean?"
" How did they get the keys to my locker, you are the only one who has the keys asides me!"
"I wouldn't do such a thing! I didn't give them your keys."
I knew Vanessa wouldn't do such a thing to me, but I had no option, I had to end this. I had to create a permanent rift between us, so she would never come back.
" Get out! Leave me alone, I don't want to ever see you again!"
The weather suddenly changed. It became cloudy and dark. It was obvious that rain was coming. There was a lightning bolt and then a huge thunderstorm. Everyone left the scene, the sudden weather change was scary. I didn't care to know if I was the one causing it. I was too broken to think.
Vanessa froze at my action and tears filled her eyes. I turned around so I wouldn't see her cry. A Sheenite cannot stand a human getting hurt.
She tried to touch me but withdrew her hands.
" You should leave here, the rain is coming." She left. Even after what I did to her, she still cared, I was such a horrible person. I knelt to the ground and it began raining.
Everyone watched in pity as I cried. I knew many of them wanted to help me, but they didn't. No one wanted to get into Jeffrey's trouble.
I searched, looking for anything, any remnant. But all left were ashes. Luckily I found a half burnt photo of little me, sitting on Uncle JoJo's laps with my fingers on the guitar strings and his hands on mine. I smiled and cried at the same time. Suddenly I didn't feel the rain beats on me again, there was a coverage over me, an umbrella.
Evan. I thought and looked up to see it was someone else. Gabe Williams. He put his jacket around me and stood me up by my shoulders.
"You could catch a cold."
" Is this how you give your jacket to anyone you see." I asked sarcastically.
"You need it more than I do. Come on, let's go inside.
Evan sat by the bed where his mom lay, she had injuries on her body. He recalled how he received a text immediately after he left the classroom, that said, come home with five ash tags. When he came home, his mom was already injured all over crying. His phone rang cutting him from his thought, it was Zoey.
" Hello babe, how are you, why aren't you in school today?" She asked.
" Something came up, but I'm fine." Evan answered.
" Well you missed a lot. Jeffrey taught that Sapphire girl a lesson, you should have been there to watch.
It's true, Sapphire! How could I forget. I wondered what would have happened to her yesterday. He hoped Jeffrey didn't do anything to her.
"What happened?" He said trying to hide the tension in his voice.
"Well yesterday, he asked her to take off her clothes before everyone, but that Gabe of a guy came to her rescue."
Shit! He cursed in his mind
"And today he burnt her favorite box, you needed to see how she was crying under the rain. It was entertaining. I don't even know what she had in that box that was so precious anyway."
" Where is she?! is she still in school?!" He got up to his feet so angry, making Zoey wonder why he sounded angry
"Ye... a..h, why do you sound...."
Immediately he hung up and ran out to meet Henry his personal guard standing by the door.
" I'm going to school, take care of Mom." He said and left without waiting for a reply.
He entered his sports car and drove out.
I sat in Gabe's office, his office was filled with computers and I could see students in it. He was also in charge of the CCTV. I held to the photo in my hand when I heard my name.
"Sapphire Davis."
I turned to see it was Gabe. How did he know my name?
"A guardian came to lay a complaint in the principal's office about Jeffrey. I heard them call your name, so I wanted to confirm if you were the Sapphire." He said and sat before me.
" My parents where here? What... No, don't tell me they came here to report Jeffrey to the principal despite my plea that they shouldn't." I bit my lower lip. That was the reason Jeffrey burnt uncle JoJo's box, for revenge.
The bell rang, it was time for class. Gabe stood up.
"You should stay here, you're in no condition to attend classes." He said and left.
It was still raining heavily and school was over. I came out of Gabe's office leaving. I didn't carebabout everyone's stare at me. Suddenly someone ran to me.
" I'm sorry..."
"No, it's okay." I answered looking at who it was.
Evan.
" Sapphire!" He called and placed his hands on her shoulder and scrutinized her.
"You are wet and... what happened?" I shrugged my shoulders removing his hand away from it.
"Don't ask me, I don't need your help." I answered leaving but he pulled me back.
"Sapphire please talk to me."
" There's nothing to talk about Evan! You gave me assurance that you were going to help me but disappeared when I really needed you. The damage has already been done. And there's nothing left. Goodbye."
I walked a few steps but stopped and turned around.
"That was the only thing uncle Jojo left behind, our memories. But he burnt them all like it was nothing." I took a deep breath.
"I shouldn't be talking about this, I shouldn't. I've never talked about it to anyone and most certainly not you." I took my leave.
Evan fisted his hand. He recalled when he met Sapphire first at the terrace. How she refused to tell him about someone she watched getting hurt but couldn't do anything about it. It was her uncle. Maybe she watched him die and couldn't do anything about it. And Jeffrey burnt the only thing she had left. He walked with fury. Everyone stared at him as he barged into Jeffrey's special class leaving the door open.
"Jeffrey what did you do?!" He asked as he walked to where he stood.
"Hey dude! How're you doing...why..."
Immediately Evan gave him a punch cutting his speech. Blood spilled on the floor while Stacy and her friends shrieked.
"Dude what the hell is wrong with you?! Aiden shouted.
"Why?.." Evan asked with his hands on his collar, he pushed him to the wall.
"Why did you burn Sapphire's things why did you?!" He threw him another punch through his face when Aiden pushed him away.
"Dude!!"
"What's wrong with you?" Zoey asked.
"What's wrong with me?! Why did you burn Sapphire's things! Why did you leave her in the rain?! Where is your heart, aren't you human beings? What did she do to deserve all this."
"Why are you so concerned about that stupid girl anyways."
"She is not stupid! She is...." He clenched his teeth to stop the words from his mouth.
All of them stared at him with so much surprise. Jeffrey froze. Ordinarily he would have dealt with whoever gave him a punch or ordered his guards to beat the hell out of such person. But Evan's attitude shocked him to the bones that he couldn't even lift his finger to defend himself. Zoey stared at Evan with shock on how much he cared for Sapphire.
"I should get out of here. It's disgusting." He said and turned around to see the crowd that gathered at the door. They paved way for him to pass and he left.
"Get the hell outta here!" Aiden ordered and everyone disappeared like wind.
I arrived home from school, my mom hurried and got a blanket, putting it around me, but I pushed it away and it fell to the ground.
"Don't, I don't need your help." I said and walked away.
"Wait wait wait." My dad stood before me to stop me.
"Honey what is the problem?"
I dropped the photo on the table.
"The problem? This is the problem. I told you, I begged you not to come to my school, but you refused, look what you've done! Jeffrey burnt all my memories of Uncle Jojo because of you! I hate you, I hate the both of you!!" I yelled and ran upstairs. They followed me but I locked the door behind me.
I took a deep breath and shut the voices of my parents calling me. I went to the rest room to have a change of clothes. Coming out of the washroom, I had that strange feeling again. I rushed to get my hood. Deep down i already accepted my fate, my fate to be Jeffrey's guardian. Now the only thing i had to do was to protect my identity, who I was. My legs moved and I saw myself in a mansion. The water fountain was beautiful. I admired the building before me. Suddenly I heard footsteps of someone approaching. I hid by the car. My eyes searched for Jeffrey. I saw him sitting on the rail by the terrace, while Stacy rested her elbows on the rail. They were both having a conversation, laughing. Stacy left while Jeffrey tried to follow her but his legs were wrapped around the rail, so it pulled him back and he fell from the height.
I ran and stretched my hand to where he was about to fall to. A transparent luminous circle appeared and he fell into it. I slowly dropped him safe on the floor.
Jeffrey sat up and looked at me.
"Wait!" He called.
I stopped backing him.
"Why are you helping me? Who are you?" He asked. He tried to get up but a force was pulling him down, keeping him in place. I was that force.
Who am I? Your worst enemy. I walked away, his guards were close, all calling out to him. Soon I ran, I vanished.
I came into my room. I took off my hood standing before my mirror. I suddenly noticed something. I was glowing. My whole body was giving off gold light. Suddenly I felt so weak to my bones, I couldn't stand to my feet. I leaned against the wall and sat on the ground. My palms shone the greatest as my eyes glowed gold. I could feel I was deteriorating. The brightness of my body increased more and more. I opened my mouth to breathe but breath out steam.
I was dieing or maybe becoming something stronger, something too powerful, something scary, something dangerous. The brightness of my palms quenched and so the rest of my body. I crawled, I had to get to bed. I didn't know that crawling was a very difficult task till now. I paused to catch my breath when my eyes closed.
