Chapter Two: The Flame Revealed

511 Words
Father Gabriel couldn’t shake the memory of the confessional. Hours had passed since Ash’s unsettling words, yet the weight of them clung to Gabriel like the smoke from a dying fire. He had heard confessions of every kind over the years—sins of greed, betrayal, anger—but never this. Never a demon. The church seemed quieter now, its shadows deeper, as though it too was holding its breath. Gabriel paced the nave, his hands clasped behind his back, his mind racing with questions. Who—or what—was Ash? And what did he want? The faint sound of footsteps broke through his thoughts. Gabriel froze, his pulse quickening. The footsteps grew louder, deliberate, until they stopped just behind him. “Is this where you find your peace?” The voice was unmistakable—deep, smooth, laced with that same unsettling amusement. Gabriel turned sharply, his gaze locking onto the figure standing in the doorway. Ash looked more human than Gabriel had expected. His features were sharp, angular, with eyes that seemed to flicker like embers. There was an otherworldly air about him, subtle but unmistakable, as though the space around him couldn’t quite contain him. “You shouldn’t be here,” Gabriel said, his voice trembling. Ash smirked, his gaze sweeping the church. “And yet, here I am.” Gabriel clenched his fists, his chest tightening. “What do you want?” Ash stepped forward, his movements smooth and deliberate. “Curiosity, mostly,” he said casually. “You intrigue me, Father. Your faith, your convictions—it’s fascinating.” Gabriel frowned, his pulse quickening. “Is this a game to you?” Ash tilted his head, his ember-like eyes narrowing. “A game? No. Games imply rules. This is something else entirely.” Gabriel took a step back, his breath trembling. “Then what is it?” Ash’s smirk faded, his expression growing serious. “A choice,” he said softly. “Yours, not mine.” The weight of his words settled heavily over Gabriel. He didn’t know what Ash meant, but the way he spoke—softly, carefully—made his skin prickle. “Leave,” Gabriel said firmly, his voice steadier now. “You don’t belong here.” Ash chuckled, the sound low and almost… warm. “You don’t really want me to leave,” he said, his gaze locking onto Gabriel’s. “Do you?” Gabriel opened his mouth to respond, but the words caught in his throat. He wanted to deny it, to tell Ash he was wrong—but a flicker of something held him back. Curiosity, maybe. Or fear. Ash stepped closer, his presence suffocating and magnetic all at once. “Think about it,” he said softly. “I’ll be around.” Before Gabriel could respond, Ash turned and walked out of the church, his footsteps echoing in the silence. Gabriel stood frozen, his mind racing, his heart pounding. He didn’t know who—or what—Ash was. But one thing was certain: this was only the beginning.
