The energy-giving body chemical still ran through Sarah as they sped away from the scene, the echoes of the gunshot ringing in her ears. Nathaniel's grip on the steering wheel was like iron, his knuckles white as he moved the SUV through the winding streets. "Where are we going?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady (even though there was the existence of) the noise and confusion happening around them. "Somewhere safe," he replied, his eyes scanning the darkened streets. "I have a few places we can go. But we need to keep moving." "Why didn't you tell me things were this serious?" Sarah pressed, extreme importance threading through her words. "You should have warned me!" "I didn't think it would increase this quickly!" he shot back, frustrated (quietly angry) beneath his calm. "I thought I could handle it." "Handle what?" she demanded. "What's happening to your company? Who are those people?" Nathaniel waited, his jaw tightening. "There are (stories that may or may not be true) about my business dealings--people want to ruin me. I thought I could manage it, but clearly, I underestimated them." "Clearly," Sarah echoed, her heart pounding. "And now they know about us too." His look flicked at her, the weight of their situation settling heavily between them. "I'll protect you. I promise." "Protect me?" she made fun (of something), a state of shock lacing her tone. "You're the one who's in danger! I came here to stand up to you about Lily, not to put both of us in the crosshairs." He shot her a look, his blue eyes strong. "You didn't put me in danger, Sarah. This is my mess, and I'll take care of it. But you need to trust me." Silence hung in the air, thick with unspoken fears and (stressful feelings that aren't being made better). Sarah turned to look out the window, trying to process everything. She had just told you about the existence of her daughter, and now she was running from men with guns. "Where is Lily?" Nathaniel's voice broke through her thoughts, laced with concern. "She's with my neighbor," Sarah said, sadness seeping into her voice. "I didn't want her to be involved in any of this." Nathaniel's expression softened for a moment. "You should have told me sooner. I could have helped you." "I didn't want to drag you into my life," she replied, her heart hurting. "I thought it was better this way." "Better for whom?" he shot back. "You're not the only one who's been affected." As they turned onto a (having no people) road, the tension in the air shifted. Nathaniel's phone buzzed again, and he quickly looked down at the screen. "It's Rebecca," he mumbled, annoyance flashing across his features. "I can't deal with her right now." "Maybe you should," Sarah strongly encouraged. "She might have information about what's happening." He let out a frustrated sigh, but he swiped to answer. "What is it?" "Where are you?" Rebecca's voice was extremely important. "We need to talk about the situation. It's worsening quickly. You're not safe." "I know that," Nathaniel replied, his voice low. "I'm with Sarah, and we're trying to get to safety." "Sarah? You brought her into this?" Rebecca's tone turned icy. "That's a mistake, Nathaniel." "It's not a mistake if she deserves to know what's going on," he shot back, his frustration boiling over. "Listen to me," Rebecca insisted. "There are people looking for her now. You need to get her out of sight.” "What do you mean?" Sarah suddenly said, panic rising in her chest. "Why are they looking for me?" "Because you're connected to him," Rebecca explained, her voice extremely important. "They think you know more than you let on." "More about what?" Sarah demanded, her heart racing. Nathaniel quickly looked at her, his jaw squeezed tightly. "I'll explain later. Right now, we need to focus on getting you safe." Rebecca's voice crackled through the phone. "You need to meet me at the old warehouse by the docks. It's the only place we can regroup without being seen. Hurry." "Fine," Nathaniel replied, hanging up. "We're going to the docks." As they drove, Sarah's mind raced with questions. The docks? It felt like a dangerous place to go, especially with everything happening. "Do you trust her?" she asked, her voice shaky. "I do," he said, his tone firm. "But I don't trust anyone else right now." They arrived at the warehouse, a large, broken-down building that stood near and threatened in the darkness. Nathaniel parked the SUV near the entrance, and they both climbed out, scanning the area for any signs of danger. "Stay close," he instructed, his voice low as he led her toward the entrance. Inside, the warehouse was dark and old and bad-smelling, the air thick with the scent of old wood and rusted metal. Nathaniel flicked on a flashlight, lighting the space ahead. Shadows danced on the walls, creating a scary atmosphere. "Where is she?" Nathaniel whispered, his eyes quickly moving around the empty room. "Maybe she's late?" Sarah suggested her fear and stress climbing. "Or maybe she's found trouble," he replied, tension radiating from him. Just then, a noise echoed from the back of the warehouse--a heavy thud followed by the sound of footsteps. "Did you hear that?" Sarah whispered, her heart racing. Nathaniel nodded, his expression (terrible). "Stay behind me." They moved carefully toward the sound, the flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. As they rounded a corner, they spotted a figure waiting (in a creepy way) in the shadows. "Rebecca?" Nathaniel called, his voice echoing. The figure stepped into the light, but it wasn't Rebecca. It was a tall man, dressed in dark clothing, a dangerous and threatening small smile etched across his face. "Thought you could run away, Chase?" he frowned, pulling out a weapon. "Who are you?" Nathaniel demanded, stepping in front of Sarah (acting to prevent harmly). "Someone who's tired of your games. You should have known better than to stick your nose where it doesn't belong." "Get away from us," Nathaniel warned, his voice low and dangerous. But the man laughed, a chilling sound that sent shakes (from fear) down Sarah's spine. "You think you can protect her? You're too late.” Panic suddenly rushed through her as she understood the seriousness of their situation. This man was dangerous, and they were trapped. "What do you want?" Nathaniel pressed, his eyes narrowing. "I want what's mine," the man said, his look locking onto Sarah. "And that includes her." Before she could react, the man lunged forward, and Nathaniel moved to stop with (and look at) him. "Run!" Nathaniel shouted, pushing Sarah away as they smashed together. Sarah's heart raced as she (made a mistake) back, energy-giving body chemicals flooding her system. She had to get out of there. But just as she turned to run (away from), she heard another voice behind her, sharp and commanding. "Stop right there!" Surprised, she froze, her heart pounding wildly in her chest.
