Chapter Three: Hidden Fevers
Evelyn’s POV
Later that afternoon, while walking back up the central staircase, a sudden dizzy spell washed over me. My balance gave out, and I tumbled backward.
Before I hit the floor, Alexander’s arms caught me. He lifted me easily into his arms and carried me back up to my room, gently resting me on the bed. He brought a first-aid kit, sitting beside me to treat a small scrape on my knee.
His warm hands were gentle against my skin. Looking at his strong profile, I felt a faint flutter in my chest. He’s so kind to me, I thought, touched by his quiet care.
He leaned down and softly pressed a kiss to my forehead before bringing me a tray of warm soup. "Eat," he said softly. "You're running a light fever."
I finished the meal, my heart feeling warm. I drifted off to sleep, feeling safe for the first time in days.
Alexander’s POV
Around midnight, I was sitting at my desk reviewing corporate documents when my bedroom door clicked open.
Evelyn walked in silently, her eyes glassy and unseeing. She was sleepwalking.
She walked toward the heavy mahogany coffee table, completely oblivious to it. "Evelyn, watch out!" I called out, jumping up from my desk and rushing across the room. I caught her waist just inches before she collided with the sharp wooden edge.
I held her shoulder, trying to wake her softly, but her head rolled back. Her skin was burning hot, a high fever had set in.
"Evelyn?"
She opened her eyes hazily, still caught in her sleepwalking state. Before I could process what was happening, she wrapped her arms around my neck, pulled me down, and pressed her lips against mine.
The kiss was desperate, warm, and sweet. A jolt went straight through my chest. I tried to pull back, reminding myself of our contract, but as her chest pressed against mine, I felt the wet fabric of her shirt.
The scent of her breast milk hit my senses, triggering an intense biological urge linked to my condition. The craving was overwhelming.
I carefully unbuttoned her top and unhooked her bra, leaning down to latch onto her breast. I pulled her close, sucking deeply to absorb the vital nutrients my body desperately needed. Evelyn let out a faint, melodic murmur in her sleep, her breathing shallow as I held her second breast gently in my hand.
I kissed her neck, my heart pounding wild against my ribs. I was losing control of the combination of her warmth, the medicine my body craved, and her proximity was pushing me to the edge.
No, I forced myself to think, taking a ragged breath. She's sick. She doesn't know what she's doing.
I pulled back gently, my lips leaving her skin. Within seconds, her eyelids fluttered shut, and she fell into a deep, fever-free slumber in my arms.
I picked her up, laid her on my bed, and pulled the soft duvet over her shoulders. Slipping under the covers beside her, I pulled her close against my chest, resting my lips lightly near her shoulder as we both fell asleep.
When I woke up at dawn, the side of the bed next to me was empty.
I put on a clean shirt and walked down to the main kitchen. The rich aroma of roasted coffee and fresh breakfast filled the air. Evelyn was standing near the stove, plating food.
"Good morning," I said, stepping into the kitchen.
"Good morning," she smiled, placing a plate on the counter. "I made breakfast."
"You don't have to cook, Evelyn. We have a full kitchen staff for that."
"I asked them to let me do it," she said softly, looking down. "I wanted to help."
I nodded, feeling a quiet warmth in my chest. "Alright. Let's eat."
