Rabid ran until the rage had burned itself out, through brush and branches tinted red with Ravener fury. Finally, she fell to the ground in an unknown part of the forest. She was miles from where Stone lay, covered in his own blood. Her back was pressed firmly against the forest floor. The dead, brown leaves beneath her created a soft cushion, but the coolness of the earth sucked the warmth from her body. The air was growing crisp, reminding the forest of the nearness of winter. When she opened her eyes, the trees above her looked like great wide veins, their leafless arms stretching dark against the deep purple sky.
