Chapter Nineteen:
~A year later~
"Is that clear?" I asked my intern-assistant, Mia.
She vigorously nodded her head and took off to do the pile of paper works I had in store for her. I kind of felt bad for her but it has to be done. I couldn't do it tonight as Brendan strictly told me to don't be late when I get home.
Home. It was our home. Not my foster parents' house, not my biological parent's house, but our home. Just Brendan and I. I smiled at that.
The year went by quickly. After my real family stayed in our home, 2 weeks later, they had found a decent apartment for them to stay in. I told them that it was no hassle for them to stay with us but mama does not think so. I also told them that I would help them with the bills but they told me no and that my help to bringing them here in New York was enough. No matter how much I persuaded mama and Arabella, they would not give in.
Brendan gave Arabella a job here at J.M.I. in Finance. Since Arabella had little experience with money and accounting as she was an accounting assistant back in the Netherlands, Brendan thought it would be good for her to work here with us.
The phone rang. It was Brendan. I grinned. I quickly answered it and placed the phone by my ear.
"Hello, there," I smiled as I greeted him.
"Hey baby," He said huskily. "Are you ready for our date later on?"
I smiled. He had another date planned out for us. "May I know where we are going this time?" I asked him, rolling my eyes in the process. I knew what his answer will be, anyway.
"Sorry, no can do, honey. But trust me, I think you will like it," He said.
I chuckled. "Are you sure about that?"
"Positive. So how was your day?"
I sighed. "It was alright. How was yours, Mr big, bad boss?"
He groaned. "It was, um, alright."
I heard the uneasiness in his voice. "Is everything alright?" I asked him.
He exhaled. "Yes, everything's okay. I just had, a, um, business meeting today."
So that's why I haven't seen him all day. I asked many of his staff if they knew where he was but none of them knew. Even his secretary wasn't there!
But who was he with? Surely not the Garcia's, right? I haven't had a decent talk with them ever since that day everything was revealed. I don't plan to have one, to be honest. I knew that it would consist of them trying to get me back on their side.
I remember one time they had the audacity to try and talk to me about coming back, even after finding out that I’ve found my real family. Of course I politely told them no. But they kept on insisting. Luckily, Brendan came to my rescue and got rid of them. He's my knight in sharing armor.
"Brendan, tell me what happened, please?" I tried once more.
He sighed. "I will tell you later. Right now, what I need you to do is get home. I sent my driver to pick you up. He will probably be outside right now waiting for you. I promise I will be on time for our date tonight."
I nodded, but then stupidly remembered that I was on the phone. "Alright, thank you. I will see you tonight."
"Take care," He added.
"I will. Goodbye."
I quickly turned off my computer and grabbed my coat and bag. I exit my office and Mia quickly looked up at me.
"Miss Roberts, you're leaving?" She asked.
I didn't change my last name. I hated knowing that it was my last name but I didn't also want to go through all that trouble to just change my last name. I want to get married one day. It didn't matter right now.
I nodded. "Brendan and I have a date tonight," I stated politely.
She nodded this time. "You two enjoy your night," She mumbled.
I instantly felt bad for her. "I'm sorry, Mia. Just do whatever you can until 6 o'clock if you please."
She shook her head. "Don't worry, I actually don't have any plans tonight," She told me. "Not anymore," She mumbled the last part quietly to herself but loud enough for me to hear.
I seriously felt bad. If she was trying to make me feel bad then it is really working. "I'm sorry, I didn't know you had plans - "
She was in shock. "Oh, no! It wasn't you! It was my stupid prick of a boyfriend who cancelled on me."
I was shocked. This was the very first time that Mia had opened up to me about her boyfriend. She was usually quiet. I had a feeling that she felt intimidated or ashamed, as if she would break out anytime.
I don't blame her, though. When she was coming in for work, someone told her to come in to my office. Little did she know that Brendan was shamelessly sticking his tongue down my throat. That poor, innocent child.
I still felt bad. "Trouble in paradise?"
"You can say that," She told me.
I sighed. "I hope you fix it with him."
She nodded. "Me, too. Thank you, Miss Roberts."
"It's alright. You take care of yourself, alright?"
"Yes, thank you, you too."
I left her there on her desk and pressed for the button on the elevator. I hopped in once it opened and pressed for 'G'. I got out as soon as the doors opened. I walked quickly, receiving a few hello's and good afternoon's in the process. It we quite nice, to be honest. They were all friendly towards me.
Just outside the entrance doors was the sleek black Mercedes Benz that would always take me around places. I must say, Luke was basically my driver instead of Brendan's. I mentally chuckled at that.
Luke opened the door for me. "Good afternoon, Miss Roberts."
I smiled warmly at him. "Good afternoon to you too, Luke."
He nodded. I got in the car and he closed it behind me. He got in the driver's side. "Off to your apartment, Miss Roberts?"
I smiled at that. I loved hearing that. I knew that it was mine and Brendan's apartment. Our home.
I nodded. "Yes, Luke, thank you."
The car ride to the apartment building was quiet but relaxing. Throughout the whole ride I watched the busy streets of New York and I still couldn't get over the fact that everyone was so used to these streets. They hardly bump into one another. It intrigued me. I knew that once I was out there, I would bump shamelessly towards other people.
Luke opened my door for me and helped me out with his helping hand. "Thank you," I told him.
He nodded and gave me a small smile. "Anytime, Miss Roberts."
I made my way to the elevator. "The penthouse, Miss Roberts?" Chad, the elevator man, asked.
Yes, we did have the penthouse. It was all because of Brendan's wealth. I still didn't know how much he is but that did not matter to me at all. I love him for who he is. But he doesn't know that I love him. Not yet, anyway.
I nodded. "Thank you, Chad."
"No problem, Miss."
I unlocked the door. The room was dim. There was little light coming from the dining area. I wonder who it was, however. I placed my bag and coat on the coat rack and I quietly made my way to the dining area. My heart was beating erratically. I could feel it on my ears. I took a peek and gasped. I made myself seen to Brendan.
The whole dining area was filled with red rose petals and tiny candles. The table was covered with rose petals as well as a vase with a few roses, candles and the finest wine - my favorite. The cutleries were set out perfectly on the table and the plates was covered with a shiny silver cover.
When my eyes landed on Brendan, my heart melted. He was holding a bouquet of flowers with a huge smile on his face. He is wearing a light blue polo long sleeves with his beige colored trousers. He looks sexy.
"Wh - what is this for?" I asked him.
This was the first time he's ever made some effort towards our date. Our other dates consisted of him, or his secretary, calling on the phone and booking us a reservation to the finest restaurants out in the city. But this was something different. This was his doing.
"Hi," He said. He made his way towards me and kissed me straight on the lips. Oh, how I missed his soft lips even though we had not seen each other for just hours! "These are for you," He handed me the flowers and I took them.
"Thank you," I told him.
"Let's eat, shall we?" He grinned nervously.
I nodded. I was lost for words. Everything just seemed to be so perfect. He helped me get seated on my seat and he sat on his.
"I hope you're hungry, I made wagyu steak, mashed potato and some roasted vegetables."
I raised my eyebrow at him but still took the cover off of my plate and the aroma of the meal soon hit my nose. It smelled divine.
"Okay, I lied. Your mom and a Arabella helped me," He chuckled.
I raised my eyebrow. "That was very sweet of them to help you."
He nodded but shrugged. "They insisted."
I nodded. I took a bite of my steak and moaned. This was really good!
He groaned, however. "You like it?" He asked me in his sexy husky voice.
I grinned at him. "Yes, it's delicious, thank you."
He looked at me and his eyes showed nervousness. What was he nervous about? Was it something to do with what happened earlier?
"How was the business meeting?" I asked him, slicing the steak.
I looked up at him and saw that he was confused. "Honey, how could I be in a business meeting when I was busy making all of this for you?"
I smiled at him sheepishly. That was true. "Oh, right," Was my stupid answer.
That kind of gave me more relief. That means that he didn't deal with the Garcia's today.
He chuckled.
"But you came to work with me this morning?" I asked, confused.
He sighed. "I left as soon as I knew you were busy. I'm sorry about that."
I nodded. "Don't worry about it. This," I looked around the room, "Is lovely. Thank you for putting so much effort into this. I also have to thank mama and Arabella."
"You are welcome. Anything for you," He said as he took my left hand in his. "You are so beautiful."
I blushed and looked away. He kissed my hand. How could I look beautiful when I just left work?
I heard shuffling and I instantly looked at his direction. He stood up, my hand still in his, and he went down to one knee. Oh. My. Is this really happening? I felt tears of happiness start to come down from my eyes uncontrollably.
"Kristine, ever since you walked in through my office door I knew I had to get to know you better. You are the most beautiful woman my eyes have ever laid on and no matter how much you don't think so, I will always willingly remind you that you are beautiful. You have changed me. Whenever I would say your name wrong, I loved the way you would get upset. Call me weird but are the cutest person when you get upset."
I playfully scowled at him, but I was certain it did not sound like a scowl. I was shaking, as well as he.
"I love seeing you happy. I would do anything just to make you happy. I love it when your eyes would brighten up whenever you're happy. I love you, Kristine Roberts. I know how much you want to change that last name so much. I know everything about you because I love you. I love you! Will you make me the most happiest man and marry me?"
I cried out even more. My whole existence, I didn't know that I was going to get lucky to get a boyfriend like Brendan. He was supportive, caring, and loving. And he loves me! He loves me!
"Yes!" I squealed. "Yes, Brendan, I will marry you! I love you so much." I felt tears come down even more. I could cry myself a river from these tears of happiness.
I heard him exhale in relief. He took out a small velvet box and showed the ring. I gasped. It was an elegant princess cut diamond ring. It was huge! I bet it costed him a lot.
"It looks beautiful," I gasped.
He placed it on my ring finger. The ring felt heavy on my hands but I loved it. I loved knowing that I was going to get married to Brendan. My Brendan.
He picked me up and kissed me while twirling me around.
"I love you," He whispered, resting his forehead on mine.
I looked up at his beautiful eyes. "As I love you."
