10 CHARLOTTE MILLER October 18 I took a sip from the glass of Chardonnay I had been nursing since noon, having spent the better part of my day on my laptop, surfing the Internet from my living room sofa. The knocking and banging noises in this house kept me awake all night. I got up to investigate some time around 1:00 AM, terrified that I would surprise an intruder, but there was no one here and no obvious cause for the sounds.
