Chapter Two

I ran, dodging past people who were trying to trade at the market causing a few of them to shout insults at me but I didn't care, I needed to get away, I needed to run! I had a few seconds head start but I knew he could catch up with me in no time. I just had to find the right place to hide. Just until I can get out of the district. " Stop!" I herd his voice behind me, it urged me to run faster. Panicking, I quickly searched around me when my eyes landed on a house that looked abandoned. I rushed towards it hoping he was far enough behind me. There was no door and the house was dark so it was definitely empty. Good. No one would know I was here. Sprinting inside I hid in the living area and tried to control my breathing, my heart rapidly beating inside my chest. I waited, one minuet, two minuets, three minuets and when I didn't hear anything I let our a long breath and sucked in some much needed air. Sliding down the damp wall I wrapped my arms around my knees and sobbed. The one thing that I never wanted to happen, has happened. What was I going to do? I had herd rumours of human girls being mated to wolves, bad rumours. They take you away from your life and expect you to be their perfect little obedient mate and produce millions of 'pups'. When I was fifteen I lived with a foster family in district seven and for a while I had a normal life, I even had a best friend. Her name was Winnie. Up until then I didn't really trust people but Winnie was different. We had a connection and soon became friends. One day a Local Alpha and some of his pack were passing through for supplies and one of his warriors had spotted her in the market and claimed her right there infront of everyone, infront of me. I watched as he sunk his teeth into her neck and bit down on her flesh. This is what they called 'Marking'. I tried to help her, but I was stopped and told it wasn't my business. Wasn't my business?! She was my best friend and I had to look her in the eyes and see the pain, see the future we both know she would have. It was the second most scariest thing I had ever seen in my life and I just stood there and watched him take her away. I never saw her again. I cried for days after that, even had nightmares so I prayed that, that would never happen to me. I guess I didn't pray hard enough. Wiping my nose with the back of my sleeve, I stared into the dark and desolate room. This was someone's home once upon a time, a family probably lived here. maybe a mom, dad, brother and sister? Old broken frames still hung on the walls in crooked positions, the pictures inside too faded to see. What happened to them? My mind wondered with the answers and all to soon the sun and begin to set. Soon it would be night and that was my best chance. The back wall of the district isn't as guarded as the front gates, hopefully ill be able to climb over the top and make my escape without being seen. And then, i run for the rest of my life. An hour later the sun had finally set and everything outside seemed quiet. but looks can be deceiving. Grabbing my backpack from the floor I stood stretching my stiff muscles hearing a few bones crack and pop in protest. Walking towards the back of the house I found a back door. Taking in a deep breath I stepped out into the cold night air, shivering slightly. I quietly walked around the back of the houses keeping my head low. The back wall of the district wasn't far but I did have to cross through the main square which was out in the open. As long as I was quick and quiet all would go to plan. Standing behind the last house I looked out at the open space that would lead me to freedom. It was deserted. Not a soul in sight. My heart was pounding in my chest and my hands were shaking. I was scared, petrified even but right now I needed to be strong. I could continue feeling scared once I was outside these walls. Closing my eyes I pictured the sweet smiley face of my mother. Her comforting words echoing around me 'You can do this, My sweet girl" With those words of encouragement I opened my eyes and scanned the open space once more. Then when I was certain is was all clear I made a run for it, my shoes squelching in the wet mud. The faster I ran the closer the other side became and then it was just a quick hop over the fence to freedom. My heart raced as I pumped my legs faster, I was almost there and then out of nowhere yellow beady eyes peered out of the shadows. I skidded to halt almost falling into the mud. I looked around for another escape route but everywhere I looked all I saw was the same. Eyes staring at me through the darkness. I was trapped. This was a trap. No! I wasn't going to just stand here and wait for them, if they wanted me then they were going to have to chase me. Looking at the wolf in front of me I narrowed my eyes and glared at him. It stared right back at me, his yellow eyes boring into my green ones. Then without any hesitation I turned and sprinted in the opposite direction, this might have been a bad idea but it was the only one I had. I had only manged to run a few feet away from the wolf before I was suddenly knocked to the ground, my body landing in the wet mud. " didn't anyone ever tell you not to run away from a wolf? We love a good chase. " my head shot up at the sound of that voice. It was him! I shivered at the thought and mentally cursed my self for running. It was a bad idea. I tried to lift my self up from the muddy ground but before I could two large hands wrapped themselves around my arms and I was lifted up and set on my feet. The hands staying put. I tried to pull free but they grew tighter causing me to wince. " Your hurting my mate" the man said with a growl in his voice. They let go and I rubbed my arms trying to get rid of the pins and needles feeling. " Im not your mate" I spat refusing to look at him . He walked towards me, his large feet coming into view. " Look at me" His deep masculine voice commanded and as much as I wanted to refuse my eyes betrayed me and moved on their own accord slowly traveling from the ground and up his thick jean covered thighs. They continued to travel further up his well-defined torso, past his chiselled jaw line and into his piercing blue eyes. He looked at me with so much happiness and so much love but I knew it was all a lie, I knew there was a monster hiding beneath the surface, ready to come out at any moment. "Your stunning" he took a step closer towards me, I scoffed in response and look back down catching a glimpse of my knife sticking out of my boot slightly. Without hesitation I pulled it free and lunged at the wolf. This caught him by surprise allowing me to graze his arm with the blade, the silver making him hiss in pain. But my victory was short lived when he grabbed me and spun me around so my back was flush against his chest. " That wasn't very nice mate "He practically spat the last word out and squeezed my writs so hard I screamed dropping the blade to the ground. "Care to tell me where you got a sliver knife from?" his hot breath fanned across my neck but I refused to speak. He moved my hair out of the way and took in a long sniff. " Mmmmm " " You smell like sunshine and raspberries " he growled and before I could register what was happening his teeth sunk down into my neck. I couldn't help but let out an ear shattering scream as his teeth ripped into my flesh. I tried to fight, to get away but the pain was unbearable, and eventually I went limp, my world fading to black.
