🌙 Chapter 2 – Shadows and Glances The next evening, Ariya found herself back at the lake, unable to resist the quiet pull of the water. The moon hung low, painting silver streaks across the rippling surface. She wrapped her arms around her knees, letting the cool breeze brush against her face, wishing it could carry away the heaviness in her chest. “You’re back.” Ariya flinched, but her heart betrayed her, skipping at the sound. Noah leaned casually against the railing, hands in his pockets, his shadow stretching across the wooden dock. “I… I like the quiet,” she said, shrugging. “Helps me think.” He nodded, his dark eyes reflecting the moonlight. “I get that. Me too.” They fell into an easy silence, the kind that didn’t demand words. Ariya noticed the way he didn’t push, didn’t probe. He just existed beside her, and for some reason, that felt safer than she expected. After a long pause, he said softly, “Do you ever feel like the world is too loud? Like everyone else is moving forward, and you’re stuck watching?” Ariya swallowed, surprised at how well he seemed to understand. “All the time,” she admitted, almost whispering. “I… I’ve learned to keep myself small. Safer that way.” Noah’s gaze softened. “Sometimes being small is how we survive. But it doesn’t mean we’re meant to stay that way.” Ariya wanted to argue, wanted to tell him that he didn’t understand, that he couldn’t. But the words caught in her throat. For the first time, she considered that maybe he did understand—even if he didn’t know her whole story. A firefly drifted past, glowing briefly in the night. She watched it, fascinated by its small, determined light. When she looked back, Noah was smiling faintly, as if he had noticed her watching it too. “You should be careful,” he said, almost teasing. “Spending too much time alone in the dark. Might get used to it.” Ariya smirked, though it didn’t reach her eyes. “Maybe I like it.” “Maybe,” he said, shrugging, “but it’s not a forever solution. Even the strongest people need someone.” She looked at him, studying the quiet warmth in his expression, the way he seemed to hold a piece of light in his hands. For a moment, Ariya let herself believe it: that maybe, just maybe, someone could exist in the dark with her—and not break her. And in the soft hush of the night, under the watchful moon, she realized that some shadows weren’t meant to scare you. Sometimes, they simply taught you to notice the light. And she took the initiative to ask the man what his name was. In the dark..he stood still, contemplating whether to answer or not. And she either didn't push him.. realizing it's better not to push some things.
