Chapter 13: Enemies with Benefits
The tension between Shawna and Sean simmered dangerously as they drove back to his apartment. The air was thick with unspoken words, unexpressed emotions, and the looming threat of Rosanna’s hold over them. Shawna’s mind churned, caught between the reality of what she’d learned and the gravity of her feelings for Sean. She didn’t know what the next step would be, but she knew there was no escaping the path she had chosen.
Sean pulled the car into the underground parking garage of his building, the engine cutting off with a low rumble. For a long moment, neither of them moved. Shawna’s eyes were locked on the dashboard, her pulse racing. Finally, Sean broke the silence.
“Come inside,” he said, his voice softer than she expected. “We need to figure out what to do next.”
Shawna turned to him, her gaze lingering on his face, trying to read the expression beneath his cool exterior. She couldn’t deny the attraction she felt—the magnetic pull that had brought her to this point. But there was more than just desire between them now. There was anger, betrayal, and fear—all twisted together, creating a dangerous cocktail of emotions.
Without a word, she nodded and followed him out of the car. Inside the apartment, the familiar scent of leather and wood greeted her, along with the quiet hum of the city outside. The space felt like a refuge, but Shawna knew it wasn’t safe—not really. The shadows of Sean’s past lingered here, and so did Rosanna’s influence.
As soon as the door closed behind them, Sean turned to her, his face hard with determination. “I know this isn’t what you wanted to hear. But you need to trust me. I’m going to fix this.”
Shawna crossed her arms over her chest, her brow furrowing. “You keep saying that, but I don’t know if I can trust you, Sean. Not when you keep holding things back.”
Sean took a step closer, his eyes narrowing. “I’ve told you more than I’ve ever told anyone. But there are things you don’t understand. This isn’t just about me. If Rosanna releases what she has, it could destroy everything—for both of us.”
Shawna felt her frustration bubble to the surface. “You don’t get it, do you? I don’t care about Rosanna’s blackmail or the skeletons in your closet. What I care about is that you keep shutting me out, even though I’m the one standing beside you in all of this.”
Sean’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, Shawna thought he might argue. But then, to her surprise, he softened. He stepped forward, closing the distance between them. His eyes searched hers, filled with an intensity that sent a shiver down her spine.
“You’re right,” he said, his voice low and rough. “I’ve been holding back. I’ve been protecting myself—because the last thing I want is to drag you down with me.”
Shawna’s breath caught in her throat as Sean’s fingers brushed against her arm. The heat of his touch ignited something deep within her, a spark that had always been there but now flared into a roaring flame. Their connection had always been volatile, but now, with everything out in the open, it was more than that. It was dangerous. It was forbidden.
“You can’t protect me from this,” she whispered, her heart racing. “We’re in it together now.”
Sean’s hand slid up her arm, his fingers grazing her neck, sending a jolt of electricity through her. “I don’t want to lose you,” he murmured, his breath warm against her skin. “But if you stay, you’ll get hurt. That’s not a risk I’m willing to take.”
Shawna’s body responded to his words, a mix of anger and desire swirling within her. She pushed against his chest, her voice sharp. “You don’t get to decide that for me. I’m not some damsel in distress, Sean. I’m here because I want to be.”
For a heartbeat, their eyes locked, the tension between them thick and palpable. Then, in one swift motion, Sean’s lips crashed against hers, capturing her in a kiss that was both fiery and desperate. Shawna gasped, her body melting into his as the world around them blurred into nothingness. All that mattered was the heat of his touch, the raw intensity of their connection.
They stumbled toward the couch, hands tangled in each other’s hair, their kisses rough and urgent. Shawna could feel the weight of their emotions, the pent-up frustration and passion that had been simmering beneath the surface for so long. It was wild, reckless, and completely out of control.
But she didn’t care. She had fallen for the bad boy, and now there was no going back.
Sean’s hands gripped her waist, pulling her closer as he pressed her against the cushions. His mouth moved hungrily against hers, his body pressing her into the softness of the couch. Shawna’s pulse raced, her mind clouded with the heat of the moment. She could feel the danger of it all—the way their passion burned too hot, too fast. But that only made her want him more.
“Shawna,” Sean growled against her lips, his voice rough with need. “I shouldn’t be doing this. You deserve better.”
Shawna’s fingers gripped his shirt, pulling him closer. “Shut up,” she whispered, her breath hitching as she kissed him harder, her own desires taking control. “We both know this is what we want.”
For a moment, Sean hesitated, his eyes dark with conflict. But then, as if something inside him snapped, he kissed her back with renewed fervor, his hands sliding down her back, igniting every nerve in her body.
Their bodies moved together in a frantic dance of passion and frustration, the line between enemies and lovers blurring until it no longer existed. Shawna had never felt anything like it before—the intensity, the danger, the thrill of being with someone she knew she shouldn’t want but couldn’t resist.
But as their heated embrace reached its peak, a cold realization began to creep into the back of Shawna’s mind. This wasn’t just a physical connection. It was something deeper, something more dangerous. She had let herself fall for Sean, and now, with Rosanna’s threats hanging over them, she knew it would only get more complicated from here.
As they lay tangled together on the couch, their breathing heavy, Shawna felt the weight of their situation settle over her. She was in love with someone she shouldn't be, and that meant living in the shadows—where danger lurked around every corner, and the line between desire and destruction was razor thin.
Sean’s arm wrapped around her, pulling her close, but Shawna’s mind was already spinning with what would come next. Rosanna was still out there, still holding the cards that could ruin them both. And no matter how strong their connection felt in the heat of the moment, Shawna knew they couldn’t escape the consequences of Sean’s past.
They were enemies with benefits, trapped in a game that neither of them could win. And Shawna had a sinking feeling that the worst was yet to come.
